GARFIELD PREPARING
:e T Prof. D. W. Dennis of Earlham, Will Give the Class Address. DIPLOMAS ARE NOT GIVEN. INSTEAD A CERTIFICATE OF MERIT WILL BE AWARDED AFFAIRS AT GARFIELD SCHOOL DURING THE PAST WEEK. The Garfield graduation committee has the program for that occasion practically completed. The Ylass addrees will be given by I'rof. D. W. Dennis, of Earlham, Mrs. Grace Gormon. will sing, Miss Carolyn Huttou will play a violin solo and the Garfield school orchestra will furnish several numbers. The substitution of certificates for diplomas is regretted by many of the class, while others approve of the change. It seemed the consistent thing to do, from the fact that a diploma is supposed to signify the completion of a course of study apd the course of study for the Richmond schools is not completed until the work of the high school is done. A certificate is merely a statement as to how much has been accomplished and may be given at any stage of the course. The girls' open evening in the gymnasium on last Thursday was a succens. A good sized audience was present to see the gymnastic drills and the basket ball games. The 7A girls gave free hand work, the SB class a dumb bell drill, and the SA's used the Indian clubs. The basket ball games were closely contested in the game, team One, with Mary Mather as captain, won from team Two, captained by Reba Gunder. the score being 15 to 13. In the second gam team Four captained by Elsie Hawekotte. won by a score of 6 to 5, from team Three, led by Louise Malsby. One of the niot valuable features of the evening was the bringing of a number of patrons Into closer contact with the school and enabling them to judge of the spirit existing between teachers and pupils. The school treasury was benefited to the extent of about ten dollars. . 4 On last Mouday morning. Prof. Thompson of the high school, gave a most interesting account of an experience on the island of I'ennykeys. to the pupils at Garfield. I'rof. Ellabarger will speak to the school next Monday morning. The TB class, which is to enter Garfield, numbers 107, consisting of 5o boys and 57 girls. In order that all will be in readiness for work, the members of the class have been asked to indicate which course they will pursue at Garfield. Nineteen have chosen the Latin course, 5! the German, 18 the English and the 11 from the Hibberd school will continue German. Forty-three boys and thirty-oue girls of tta. class have asked to take gymnastics. With this information at hand it will be possible to have the program completed and the assignment to divisions made, so that the first day of the new term will find all in readiness for work. They turn suddenly upon their best friends and spit and claw and scratch. Most of the women in this room came here to hear testimony against Mrs. Mitchell.'' With these words Judge Harvey Keller, in common pleas court, cleared his court room of 200 well-dressed women today, at the opening of the hearing of the divorce case of Horace Mitchell against pretty Helen Mitchell. "A divorce trial is always attractive to women," Judge Keller continued. "They come to hear of grillroom escapades, because they probably never have been in one. Local Telephone Men Watching the Situation. Richmond telephone men now look toward Indianapolis as some interesting developments arc expected in that city, for in a petition tiled with the board of public works, the Indianapolis Telephone company apain asks for an amended franchise from the city, that wculd be, in effect, practically a new franchise, with higher rates and a longer term of life. The amended franchise also would eliminate the provision in the present contract in regard to the city's right to acquire the plant of the company; would decrease the company's annual payment to the city; would remove any limit to the company's capital stock and would strike out the provision compelling the company to connect with the lines of any outside company asking for such connection. The provision in regard to the extension of local service on petition of property holders is also eliminated. The petition is receiving active opposition in the capital city. HIS RULING PASSION. A Business Proposition That Just Failed of Success. There lived in Detroit a man who was the champion letter writer to the newspapers and to the heads of all public enterprises. One of bis fads was to write every day to President Ledyard of the Michigan Central railroad I and tell Ledyard wherein be was failing in the conduct of his road. There was a letter for Ledyard every morning. They annoyed him, and he sent for his general counsel one day and said: "Russell. I'm getting tired of these letters. I will give you $3,000 more a year if you will find that man end stop him for twelve months.'' Three thousand dollars more a year appealed to Russell, and he went out j to find the letter writer. lie found i ! him and made a business proposition. ! "Now, see here," be said, "I want you j to stop writing letters to Mr. Ledyard. j ii you win quu lor a year i win give you 91,500." j The letter writer consented gladly. Things went along swimmingly for j eleven months. Ledyard was happy, and Russell was happy. Then there was a wreck on the road. The letter i writer could not resist the opportunity, ! and he wrote to Ledyard and told him j what he thought about the road and its president and its management. J Ledyard sent the letter to Russell ' with this Indorsement: "This is where vou lose $3,000." And it was. Satur- I day Evening Post. Absinth Foretold. FAT OFFICERS TO BE Gen. Bell Hints That Riding Tests Will Not Be Severe. Washington, Jan. IS. That tin; horsemanship tests inaugurated by order of tlie president are to survive -uul be extended as a measure to increase, and determine the physical efficiency of officers of tha army was indicated by Cen. liell, chief oi staff, in natenicnts made by him before the house committee on military affairs, which had up for hearing the army appropriation bill. Gen. Bell's comments showed him to be heartily in accord with the president's views as to the propriety and necessity of these tests. He intimated that in the future these enduranre tests will call for' thirty miles a day in the saddle for three consecutive davs, but ho also sugge sts that wh n the test has reached that degree of severity some consideration will enter into the determination of which ofi'i - ccrs shall bo subjected to it, the infer - ence being that the order will not be all-inclusive as it has been in she past Eat anything you want, don't starve ! yourself, fearing it ; Hollister's Rocky won't agree, for Mountain Tea cleans the bowels and stomach, and makes digestion easy. just as the fire chimney creates a draft. Argand"s lamp was the first to have a chimney. Look below the chimney and you will fee open passages through which air may pass upward and find its way to the wick. Notice further that as this draft of air passes upward it is so directrd that when the lamp Is burning an extra quantity of air plays ; directly upon the wick. Before Argand 'the wick received no supply of air. I Now notice and this is very important that the wick of our modern lamp is flat or circular, but thin. The air in abundance plays upon both sides of the , tnln wick an(1 burns it without makinsc smoke. Smoke is simply half burned ' particles isoot.) of a burning suDstance. plied. Now Argand, by making the : w ick thin and by causing plenty of air ! to rush into the flame, thereby caused it to burn with a white flame. ' Afier the iuveution of Argand the art of lamp making improved by leaps ; and by bounds. More prozrs wa- ! made in twenty rears after 1TS3 than had been made in twenty centuries be- : i fore- Xew burners were invented, new and better oils were used and better wicks made, but all the new kinds of lamps were patterned after the Argand.
