"We grocers thought, the price stiff enough, for the eo.st of manufacture is nominal, the market price of oats being the principal cost factor. Now the different, manufacturers have cradual ly merged interest until there are only two firms that figure prominently in the manufacture of that, popular breakfast food. These two firms are dose)y allied and their prices for the different brands of oats are the same. A rhort. time ago they decided to advance 1he price of oats, but instead of the usual method they tried that of reducing the size of the package and so neatly was this executed that, the reduction in dze. which practically amounts to an Advance In the price of 2. per cent, was not noticed for nearly a month. A jiackage of rolled oats used to contain twenty-four ounces of oats, not including the card board box; now the weight Ijox and all, is only sixteen ounces. Advance a Gouge. "The advance is simply a gouge on the part of the trust for the cost of production and the price of the raw material does not merit it. According to my estimate basing the cost at the present price of May oats in Chicago f4 cents a bushel, and allowing thirtytwo pounds to the bushel, the profit to the manufacturer would be over loo per cent. There used to be l'i pounds in a package (there is little over a pound now) and we will allow two bushels to a case of thirty-six packages, making the initial cost a fraction under : cents a package. The cost of manufacturing rolled oats, allowing a liberal estimate, makes the total not over $1.30 a case. We have to pay more than twice that amount from first hands."

Mr. Ionian has not made an announcement of his candidacy. lie was formerly pastor of the United Brethren church at Honey Creek, but was compelled to emit the puipii on account of poor health. Draining the cup. a cup of wafer talcen him, Knox, who is a powerful man, succeeded in crumpling the tin rim and converting the sharp edges into a weapon. With this he sawed back and forth across his neck in an attempt to sever the jugular vein. He was unconscious when discovered by Sergt. Wallace, who promptly had him removed to the hospital.
