HOSTILITIES HAVE BROKEN 001 AMONG SAILORS AND COLORED MEN AT RIO JANIERO
Rio Do Janeiro, Jan. K. A row occurred between some of the sailors from the American fleet ami a number of the city's rougher element. Some of the Americans wore in a saloon, where two Brazilian negroes became iurolved in a ouarivl. One of the negroes threw a boul at the other, but inlawed him. ami the missile hit a Bailor. The latter chased the neuro from the place and thought the matter ended. The nesim. however, thought differently. He obtained a big Knife, and returned to the saloon seekina: vengeance. He attacked the first sailor a w. The sailor, before the neuro could deal an effective blow with his weapon, handed him a good light arm American loir on the jaw ;n;l the colored gentleman withdrew from the Came. The matter was investigated today and it was decided that the Americans were in no wise to blame for the trouble. This decision was concurred in by the Brazilian authorities ar.d as a resuit double the number i' mm were aliow- ; ed to go ashore yesterday, their number reaching !.' m. The Brazilian officials approved Admiral Kvans" course in giving the greater number Shore leave. It is generally admitted that the local police are a ImV stow in preserving poa--e. The chief of police says that the whole affair w;is a deplorable blunder, it has not had the -Hghte.-f etfeet upon t he cordiality displayed ! toward the Americans by the Brazilians. Adnti'a! they ar not. 'Old Sol is beaming every day and the weather suits everyone except the Iremaii. While the natural ice dealers are a little anxious they have not given up hope that there will yet be ice and lots of it. Last year ice was harvested at the eleventh hour. But the quality was very poor, the majority of it being soft and dirty. They managed to get along with it, but the artificial ice com
