CALENDAR CHUT

MOR
At the beginning of the year we '"chilly month"; February, "vegeta-
again take up the old chant, learned in our earliest school days, a rhyth-'
mic key to the varying lengths of months, a calendar that never goes amiss: Thirty days hath September, April, June and November; All the rest have thirty-one Rut February twenty-eight alone, Except in leap year, once in four, When February has one day more. The name of the poet of this ancient bit of knowledge has been lost, but the fatherless rhyme has gone on for centuries it was 'old before the year 1S0 and will doubtless go on to the last day of tim. Latin Names Had Meaning. How little do the Iatin names of the. months suggest to most of us. The Anglo-Saxons and kindred peoples had names for the months that were more expressive. King Victor Emanuel of Italy Having Trouble With Italians From America.
ANARCHISTS OF NEW YORK.
Home, Jan. 11. King Victor Emmanuel, is having considerable difficulty with the Italians who have returned to Italy from the United States during the last two months. He is confronted with a large army of the unemployed, recruited to an alarming degree from the ranks of Americanized Italians, Everywhere throughout Italy, but particularly in the southern part of the kingdom, the peatriated Italian cuts a prominent figure in socialist and anarchist agitation. The press of Rome declares that some of the most dangerous of the anarchists are men who have come back from New York and Chicago since Nov. 1st.

CONSULTATIONS IN ORDER.
Washington, D. C. Jan. 11. The failure of the land fraud indictments to pass judicial muster has proved extremely disappointing to the department of justice and to the president. The vexation can be well understood. It is now known that the President and II r. Bonaparte were in consultation over the matter for several days

tion month"; March. "Spring month ; ; April, "grass month"; May, "flower; month"; June, "summer month"; July, "hay month"; August, "harvest month"; September, "autumn month"; i
October, "wine month"; November, "slaughter month"; December, "winter month." While these names were approximately fitting to climatic conditions in northern Europe, they would not suit themselves to conditions in our middle West, nor, indeed, to any part of our country. Our arbitrary division of the year into twelve months took origin in the natural division deti-rmined by th moon's revolutions. The month of nature, which has been sadly tampered with by .Julius Caesar and o titer earlier nature fakers, is strictly twentynine days, twelve hours, forty-four minutes and three seconds. There arttwelve such periods and rather less than eleven days over in a year.

TAFT MAY POSTPONE PET TARIFF BILL
Washington, D. C, Jan. 11. At the instance of the postal progress league a bill will be Sntrodticed in congress at an early date for the consolidation of the first, third and fourth classes of mail matter with a common rate of one cent for each two ounces or fraction thereof. The idea represented in this bill will constitute the principal point of the league's program for the coming year. It is hardly to be expected that so radical a move will receive the sanction of legislative enactment, but that prospect doefe not deter the association from furthering a reform the acceptance of which it con
siders to Do only a question of time.

Washington. D. C. Jan. 11. While Secretary Taft is anxious to obtain a compromise Philippine tariff bill this session, limiting the amount of sugar and tobacco which may annually be brought into this country from the Philippines at reduced rates or free of duty, it may be that he will consider it wiser to postpone the issue until next year, in case he can get a definite pledge from certain large and responsible interests that they will not then oppose the measures.

It Has Been Known Sine th Earliest
Days of Civilization. A few winters ago I passed a flay among the wonderfully decorated tombs in the cemetery of what was once Memphis, upon the western bank of the Kile, writes Julius Chambers in the Brooklyn Ea;le. One of the show places is the remarkable underground palace that the illustrious Queen Ti of the fifth dynasty (i. e., about 4.500 years ago) constructed for her final resting place. It consists of a great court 40 by 60 feet, as I remember, and several other apartments, besides the mummy chamber, which is reached by a stairway leading down from the largest room. Upon the wails of this tomb are the best preserved pictures to be found in all Egypt, aud among them are the figures of two artisans working upon coverings for the feet. Therefore, makers of shoes, 1. salute you! More than 4.000 years before the art of printing had practical existence, although you will admit that the decorator of Queen Ti's tomb was almost a publisher, your art was recognized, respected and immortalized.. The natural impulse of mankind is to go barefoot. Every reader can remember youthful days iu which the greatest possible pleasure was embodied in a run -through the woods or along the shore unshod. Very well can I recall the secret spot in the barn in which I was wont to hide my shoes and stockings in order that I might be in the competition for the first Etone bruise of the summer. That was the primitive man, speaking up for the faraway days "before we were women and men."'
