SECURES MONEY EASILY.

&TUDY NOW MAKING AN EFFORT TO FIND THE OTHER END OF "RACKET" WHICH HAS BEEN WORKED IN THE CITY.

The police are investigating ihe ca.se tf G. W. Schupeck, arrasted Wednosay, and it is believed that. evidenie tnough ran be secured to convict tho tian of securing money under false pretenses. Schupeck has a clever "come on" game and it is stated th st lie has worked It successfully in this tity, numerous people being his victims. He Is out on bond. This morning Mr. Study stated that le had discovered Schupeck had workId the following ingenious game in Richmond. Schupcck represents himself to bthe agent of a Chicago art school. In aearly every case he has selected a ivoinan for his victim. He tells the housewife that the institution he represents wants good photographs which Ihe art students can use as models to make oil and black and white studio. . !f the house wife will lo;in him a photograph she will have it returned to her together with the oil or black and fchite study made from it. After securing the photograph Schpeck returns to the house wife with a rough sketch of the photograph. He lolls her that this is a rough draught !f the art work to be made from tli? photograph. The woman then asks lor the photograph and Schupeck "reluctantly informs her that he has orBers not to return it unless the woman buys a frame for it. In order to scture the return of the photograph the rietini nearly always pays for the frame, which costs about s;'..on. It is seedless to say that she never receives Ihe oil or crayon study made from the photograph. Mr. Study states that an effort is now being made to discover where Sohupock secures his frames. It is thought they are made in this r.tate. Indianaplis. probably. If the frames are thipped to Richmond from outside the itate it is doubtful if any action can be taken against Schupeck. owing to the !aet that he would be protected by the nterstate commerce law.

San Francisco, Cal.. Dec. 1:5. From a statement made by Assistant District Attorney Francfe J. Heney, it Is believed that the prosecution is contemplating granting Abraham Ruef immunity, in order to prosecute successfully the bribery- graft, cases by getting the former political boss to take tV' stand and furnish the link between Supervisor James I,. Gallagher and public service corporation, who through Ruef, are alleged to have done the bribing. While not saying in so many words that Ruef's demand for immunity would be granted and The former political chieftain be made the star witness in the trial of Patrick Calhoun, president of the United railroads. which has been set for Jan s. District Attorney Heney said today: "Two juries have declared that Ruef's testimony is necessary to return a verdict of guilty. Public opinion seenis to demand that Ruef shall testify even if he has to be granted immunity. If the publicwants it it may be necessary to put Ruef on the stand on those terms."

Dayton, Ohio, December 13 Members of the Markowitz family have given their respective versions of the tragedy in which Miss Anna Markowitz and her escort, Abraham Cohan, were slain west of the city before the .jury chosen to determine the fate of Dayton Lines, the negro charged with the crime. 'Today Harry Markowitz, who recently has been employed in Cincinnati, was severely cross-examined l Attorney C. H. Knniler for the defense. 'I saw Anna lying on the ground," said Harry Markowitz, "and picked her up. I could see that, she was hurt, but did not know she was dead. 1 begged her to speak to me, but there was no response. I then found that she was dead." Jacob Bremen, who entertained the Markowitz family on the fateful Sun

day, corroborated the brothers as to their his home with their ters at the hour the

were killed. Attorneys for the state declare that, the Markowitz brothers did not go in search of their sister tin ti ! alter the crime had been committed, but the rigid cross-examination of the defense indicates the attorneys will lay considerable stress upon the actions of the brothers.

Washington, D. C, Dec.- 13 It is now the Pullman Sleeping Car company which the government has decided to place upon the grill. Under an order made by the intervtate commerce commission an investigation is to be made by Commissioner Lane to determine the right of the vonipany to provide upper berths, and w hether the charges it Eposes are just and reasonable. More than K:.oh.OOo people are interested in the determination of these questions. that being the numix-r which annually patronize the sleeping cars. The matter was brought to the attention of the commission in the form of three complaints filed by Geo. F. Loft us of St. Paul. The complaints were referred to the Pullman company for answer, but thai company declined to make any extended reply, merely denying generally the allegations made, and declaring that it did not make unjust and discriminatory charges. It. asserted further, that it was not. amenable to the interstate commerce laws, contending that it is not engaged in transporting passengers, but merely in the business of providing them with accommodations in the way of chairs, bed and food.

CARELESSNESS CAUSE OP TRACTION WRECK Track Employes Will Have to Shoulder Blame.

POLES HID THE SWITCH.

Peru. Ind., Dec. 13 Clinging to the rail on the last car of a train with one hand, and holding her suit case in the other hand. Miss Nellie Bailey, a teacher of Amboy, was carried from Amboy to Converse last night. The young woman was on her way to Marion to visit her parents. When she arrived at the station at Amboy the train was just leaving. Thinking she could open the vestibule door she stepped aboard. The operator at Amboy noticed her perilous position and had the train flagged at Converse. She was greatly frightened by the perilous ride.

Carelessness on the part of track employes in leaving a switch open i held responsible for the wreck of the northbound interurban car No. 310 on the Shelbyville line at Acton Park yesterday morning at 9:53 o'clock which killed Donald M. Sleeth, 2S years old, a Shelby ville attorney, and the injuring of a score of other persons. The injured are as follows: Frank McCray, Rock Lane, ribs broken and internal injuries; Mrs. .1. T. Poles hid the switch stand from the view of James Rattreall. the motorman. until the car was within seventy-five feet of the open switch. He turned off the current and aoniied the emergency brakes, but within the twinkling of an eye almost the car, carrying seventytwo passengers, had struck the switch and turned over on one side.

j It is slated in a foreign contemporary that the chief condition to the achievement of a perfect preparation of eau de cologne is prolonged storage. The production of this world famous article in its original home in Cologne is carried on in the simplest manner. The ethereal oils are first mixed with the wine spirits, and the mixture after two months digestion is distilled at gentle heat. The preparation is then placed in kegs and removed to the cellar where it lies five or six years, and only then la placed
