MACHINE SHOWS HAND. William Blodgeft, staff correspondent of the Indianapolis News and erst'while Richmond newspaper man, niap'ped out a very pleasing little pipe;dream tatnpaigu for Judge Barnard if IKew Castle, the other day. Accordling to Blodgett, Judge Barnard is to 'be- handed the nomination to congress ion a silver platter. Wayne, Union (Franklin and Fayette counties are gojlng to give their candidates a eomplijmentary vote in the covention and then 'turn to Barnard and with open arms aay, "Take us, we were just doing the jpolite act. when we voted for so-and-iao." Tho great trouble with Blodgetfs ; prophecy is, that it makes Barnard's path too much of a bed of roses. It 'looks too much like the campaign map,pd out by a political machine regardjless of the wishes of the people. And 'hat is just what it is. The Fairbanks machine, whose mouthpiece is the Inidianapolis News, has through Blodgett, mapped out its campaign to seat Barnard in James Watson's place In congress. The machine, although badly bent in Wayne county, is still in pretty fair running order in the other counties of the district and counts on being able to nominate it candidate, Barnard, in spite of the sentiment in thia county. However, the machine need not be so sure of having such easy sailing as ?t anticipates. There is not only wide spread dissatisfaction with it in Wayne county, but even in Henry county one of the strongholds of machine politics In this district, a sentiment has arisen and is growing against bossism and machine dominance in politics. If this growing feeling of dissatisfaction can be encouraged and strengthened
and used to good advantage, there is no earthly reason why Barnard and machine politics should not be defeated at the next district convention. The logical candidate for the other counties of the district to throw their! strength to is the candidate of Wayne county. Wayn county is the largest : In the district and the candidate selected to receive our full strength by the primary, If nominated, could get practically every vote not only in this oounfty, but also in Fayette and Union, as (the three counties mentioned are more or less joined together for political reasons. A Wayne county candidate heading the party ticket will stand every chance of being elected. The Hent jry county candidate, if nominated, would stand an excellent chance of being defeated on account of his well nown alliance with the Fairbanks' machine. They may laugh at the idea, that dissatisfaction with the ma-
, chine will lose Barnard votes were he (nominated, but they should not forget the way hundreds of voters remained
i away from the polls at the last congressional election on account of the
antagonism towards James Watson
and machine politics. The republican party can be success
ful in the Sixth district If it is headed
by someone other than a machine man
But with Barnard or any other Fairbanks' man leading the party in this neck of the woods, it will only be after
a tight squeeze, if at all, that he can
get through with a victory.

BROKEN NECK NO BAR TO WEDLOCKSAYSSCOTT
Man Once Supposed to Be Fatally Injured, Married.
IS PARTIALLY PARALYZED.
Columbus, Ind., Dec. 6 Despite the fact that a few months ago he was supposed to be dying of a broken neck, Omria A. Scott of Elwood today obtained a marriage license to wed Ada

been married.
When he was working on a. farm
near Muncie a few montns ago nis
neck was caught in a hay fork and he was thought to be fatally hurt. Physicians said his neck was broken, and it is believed that the vertebra has
grown together again. Although he is partially paralyzed from the effects of the accident he has recovered his health and is able to go about unas

"There is one sure way of getting a
man interested in the proceedings c
the criminal courts," said the gray-
headed man, "and that is to put him on
a grand jury. Just let the man once
serve the public in that capacity, and
thenceforward he becomes an indefat
igable Btudent of the criminal records The result of his experience is, in i
way inevitable. Naturally a man with
a spark of curiosity about him is anxious to know the outcome of the trials
of the persons he has found indict
ments against. In following these easos
through the various courts he acquires an interest in judicial proceedings that
really never dies." New York Sun.

The Lunch Counter
Is the Cause of Dyspepsia and Indigestion, Catarrh of the Stomach and Heart Disease.
Nine-Tenths of Those Who Eat There Bolt Down Their Food. The next time you eat at a lunchcounter just you watch the people opposite. Look down the whole line and notice how they bolt down their food, washing it down with hot coffee or cold water. First they take a large bite then a drink, a bite and a drink, hurrying through their meal in five or ten minutes. Many of them don't know the correct way to eat, while others are so intent on money-making that they will not take the time to eat properly. The lunch counters create a great demand for Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets, for every one now knows that they assist the stomach In digesting the food that has been suddenly forced down into it. Health should be the first thing sought for in the battle for existence. With a sound body all things are possible to man. while ill-health handicaps him. The digestive impulse Is the life of the stomach. If this Is eakened, crippled by abuse eating improper food, the rest of the body suffers also. The body and brain are nourished through the digestive impulse. Food is called for and, if proper in quality and quantity, the tissues are repaired as fast as mental and physical activity break them down. This is life. Grape-Nuts food not only meets the requirements of tissue-repair, but is a powerful source of vital energy. It contains the vital phosphates stored up in wheat and barley by nature. t A food expert prepared this food so you can get these vital elements without bother, cooking or other effort than simple eating it. Eaten slowly, with cream, it is delicious and satisfies the "digestive impulse." It also quietly, systematically builds up brain and nerve. "There's a reason." The internal troubles of the Central
rassenger Association reacneu a cri-1 sis yesterday when it became known j that the Erie railroad had served no-1 tice that it would withdraw from the J organization on January 1. Thi.i is ! the culmination of a series of disputes occasioned by the fight which the Erie has waged on the practice of granting agents of other lines com-, missions on transatlantic business. j When D. W. Cooke, now general traffic manager, became general passenger agent of the Erie, he sought admission to the association. The troubles began immediately. The Erie fooh found that, us a small road, it was ground between the conflicting interests of the greater ones, liiing bound by the rules of the association, it was forced to abide by the decisions of the majority. It is true that each road reserves the right to take
independent action in all matters, but
such a course is seldom pursued.
The meeting of the Central Passen
ger Association will be held Decem
ber 11, and it will afford the last opportunity for the roads to natch up their differences before the Erie withdraws. The action makes the Erie aj strong factor at the coming meeting, j but it is a question whether the other j
roads will be coerced into doing what they have refused to do voluntarily.
BACK TO EIGHT HOUR SHIFT. Pennslyvania employes were great
ly surprised today when notices were
posted that the working schedule of the shops would again undergo a change and effective this morning, all
the company shops in the city, v ith the exception of the bolt machine and j laboring gangs in the machine snop, would be placed on an eight-hour ba- i sis. The bolt and labor gangs, com-1 prising about thirty-five men, will con- j tinue to work nine hours. As stated, the order came as a complete surprise ', to the shopmen, for the schedule was recently lengthened from eight to nine i hours and it was thought that within a few days the shops would return to I
the former working conditions of ten hours and, as was usually the case, overtime on two and as much as four and five nights per week. The officials refused to discuss the matter and no intimation was made as to how long the conditions would remain. In the east the hundreds of employes who were temporarily laid off during the money flurry have been gradually taken back until at the present time but a few remain out of employment and the shop schedules have again returned to the former status.

Washington, Dec . 6. Mrs. Annie M. I have no bitterness no hatred in my heart, but my line of duty has changed, and I
DEATH OF G. R. & I. ENGINEER. The Grand Rapids (Mich.) Press of yesterday had the following to say of the death of William McDonald, a former veteran engineer employed on the G. R. & I. railroad and very well known among the local road employes: "William McDonald, who died Monday evening at his residence, 9 Sinclair street, aged forty three, was very well 'known throughout the city, having been in the employ of the Grand Rapids & Indiana and Pere Marquette railroad companies since a mere boy up to about eight years ago. He met
with an accident, having his left hand shot off, and since thnt time has been unable to work."
TO DETERMINE SPEED. Experiments to determine the limit of locomotive speed are in progress at Clayton, N. J. No. 10003, the only engine of the kind in the world has been compfeted by the Baldwin Locomotive works and equipped with Westinghouse electric equipment. It has drive wheels the size of a steam locomotive and can run by either direct or alternating current. It is fitted with a pantagraph. This is a new style of trolley pole which takes the wire when the engine touches a button. It cannot "slip the trolley" and will catch the wire anywhere within a radius of three feet. To ring the bell the engineer pushes a button. The engine is owned by the Pennsylvania.

Ten cents seems like a piker game, but when we've got 250,000 members, that trifling ante amounts to $25,000 a month." SLOW BUT
The man of small means cannot afford to speculate because he cannot afford to lose. "Slow but sure" should be his motto when planning for the future. Wealth will not be his In a day, but he will stay rich when he gets there. There is no safer or better way to invest money than to place it in a savings account where it will earn three per cent, compound interest.

PASSENGER AGENTS MISSED. A fact which may have escaped the
notice of the averag3 person Is that the traveling passenger agents who ! have made Richmond within the past! three months have been conspicuous j mainly by their absence. There has j been just one agent from a western i road at the local ticket offices within j
the past two weeks. It seems that owing to the slump which the passenger business has sustained has prompted the officials to call in all traveling agents instead of letting them stay out on the road, constantly running up large expense accounts, with no direct returns. The eastern roads, that is, those east of Chicago, have made no reductions in their working
force and are keeping their men busy
looking up each prospect, which
am going to follow it through."
