Washington, December 4. Secretary
Cortelyou said today that he expected to see nearly all the banks in the coun-
! try resume the unrestricted payment cf ! currency before the end of the week. He had on his desk today telegrams ; from bank's in many parts of the coun- ; try announcing they were ready to return to a normal basis. It is the understanding at the treasury that in
most of the cities cash payments will be renewed without any formal announcement of the fact being made. Senator Beveridge called on the controller of the currency today at the request of the Indianapolis Clearing House association and urged the controller to issue a call as soon as possible for a statement from the banks cf the country. Controller Rldgcly assured him that the office is now considering the advisability of issuing a callj The Clearing House association wired the senator the resolutions adopted, whichrepresent that nothing would do more to restore confidence than a showing of the condition of the banks. The text of the resolution is as follows: "Resolved. That it is the unanimous opinion of the Indianapolis Clearing House association that an early call for a statement by the controller of the currency would greatly relieve the present situation and do more than any other one agency to facilitate the resumption of cash payment and the restoration of normal conditions." Under the law the controller must issue a call before the end of the year.
St. Louis, Dec. 4. The police of St. Louis, have never come in contact with a case equal to that of Mrs. Susan Edwards McGee, a young girl who believes she has a dual personality and who is held on a charge of stealing jewels from a West End home, where she was employed as a maid. This young woman is not only an author, but a mathematician, a pronounced agnostic, and a brilliant conversationalist. The hospital physicians are unable to decide whether she is insane or not. Mrs. McGee is twenty-three years old but appears to be no more than twenty. She was divorced three years ago.
The girl has written for magazines ' under the name of Alexander Watson. ! In explaining her dual personality the ' prisoner says that in lightning time she changes from an up-to-date girl. 1 lover of books, mathematical prob
