Assistant District Attorney Fletcher Dobyns, who is chief counsel for the government in the trial of John R. Walsh on charges of misapplying funds of the defunct Chicago National bank, made an unsuccessful attempt to impeach the testimony of B. B. McKay, former private secretary to the defendant in the federal court here. The attempt was made because McKay, who has been on the stand nearly three days as a government witness, failed to answer questions satisfactorily. Judge Anderson ruled against the government's eourse hecause he considered that Mr. Dobyns nad failed to lay a proper foundation for such action. Mr. McKay was recalled to the stand yesterday afternoon after several witnesses had denied signing memorandum notes to which their signatures were attached, and after Horatio W. Seymour, former publisher and editor of te Chicago Chronicle, had testified as to the WRlsh methods of nnanc'n" that r-nrm-ise. The forgetfulr.ss of Mr. McKay brought an ear ly clash with Mr. Dobyns. The witness was shown a certain deposit slln for $290,000 and was asked if he had deposited it with a check for a like amount to Mr. Walsh's private account. On his failure to remember, Mr. Dobyns asked if he had not so testified before the federal grand jury that indicted his former employer. "The happenings of a grand jury are supposed to be a secret," interposed Attorney Miller for the defense. "The government cannot impeach ita own witnesses in this manner." Judge Anderson sustained the procedure, but ruled with the defense because foundation for impeachment had not been laid. The government attorney then endeavored to establish such a foundation, but the failure of tie witness to recollect anything except generalities balked him. The court finally ordered all references to the grand Jury proceedings strickem from the record. Throw swsy ptils sni strong: catlsrHc whlcb i iTt Tielt hi settoB.snc always have oo hsts-i I ;r. PAYING THE TOLL The Cost In Human Life of Hunting in Northern Woods. Milwaukee. Wis., Nov. 28. The record of fatalities in the pineries of northern Wisconsin and upper Michigan during the open game and deer season of 1907 which closes Saturday night, is far greater than duiing any j season for many years past. A total of thirty-one nimrods have lost their lives through their own carelessness or at the hands of hunting companionB since the open season be gan while thirty-seven and possibly more have been maimed and wounded, That this recor5 win be swelled before the close of the week is probable, as the woods are fired with hunters at the present time and there has been without doubt many fatalities in the heart of the pine woods, far from the settlements, that have not been mada public. Vulcanite Roofing is not a new article. It has been on the market many years took highest honors and gold medal at Philadelphia over thirty years a,;o and used on buildings where only the best roofs were considered. At that time the manufacturers of Vulcanite could not compete with the price of shingles, to Vulcanite was used only where the best roof was required, regardless of price. Since then, sliiugles. tin. etc.. have gone up in price so that now Vulcanite can be had just as cheap or even cheaper. The - wearing quality of Vulcanite has lug been established. You can lay it over old shingles with entiiv satisfaction. CAUTION Do not confuse VULCANITE with "Sthetchold," "Doubleoid," "Beeroid," "Tightwad." and the many other roofings which have sprung on the market recently. You can always tell Vulcanite by its silvery coating and by its great toughness. Tin caps not used. Pilgrim Brothers Filth and Main. Richmond, Ind.
