November 30 is St. Andrew's day. Andrew was the son of Jonas, a fisherman in Bethsaida, in Galilee, and was the brother of Simon Peter, but whether elder or younger the scriptures do not say. He was one of the two disciples of John the Baptist, to whom the latter exclaimed, as he saw

Jesus pass by: "Behold the Lamb of God!" On hearing these words, the two persons in question followed Jesus and having accosted Him, were invited by the Savior to remain with him for that day. Thereafter Andrew went in quest of his brother, Simon Peter and brought him to Jesus, a circumstance that has invested Andrew with special prominence. After the ascension, the name of Andrew is not mentioned in the New Testament, but he is believed to have traveled as a missionary through Asiatic and European Scythia; to have afterward passed through Thrace, Macedonia and Eperus into Achaia; and at the city of Patra to have suffered martyrdom about 70 A. D. Roman pro-consul, it is said, caused him to be first scourged and then crucified, by being bound with cords to the cross, to produce a ling-ering death by hunger and thirst. The instrument of punishment, it is said, instead of being T shaped was in the form of an X. A legend says that in 368 A. D.. the body of this Saint was conveyed to Scotland by a monk named Regulus, and deposited on the eastern short- of Fife, where afterward rose the cathedral of St. Andrew. Since that time Andrew has been regarded as the patron Saint of Scotland.

SOUTH FIRST STREET SEWER BEING PUSHED Work on It Is Progressing Rapidly.

OTHER WORK GOES OVER.

HELD ON TO CONTRACTS.

Trustees of Wayne county will on December 1. make their first quarterly settlement with the four school book companies which refused at the opening of the school year to break the contracts originally drawn and which specified that the trustees should handle their output. The amount of money which will be forwarded to these companies will be large. School book concerns that absolutely refused to abide by the recent state law, and with whom the trustees will have to make settlement, are the Indiana School Book company, Ginn and company, Longmanns, Green & Co., and the Sanburn company. Trustees are now preparing their settlement sheets.

Construction of the South First street sewer is progressing rapidly, according to President C. W. Merrill, of the board of public works. Not

withstanding the rapid progress that

is being made it will be impossible

for the board to let contracts or start

active construction of the macadam

street, cement sidewalks, curb and gutters. This will be left until next spring and will be made along with other 1908 improvements. The southwest sewer system of West Richmond has also been shelved for this year at least, but early next year the proposition will again be brought to light, dusted and bids asked for contractors.

BEER AND WHISKY FOUND AT THREE ESTABLISHMENTS OF THIS NATURE LIQUOR WAS CONFISCATED.

Indianapolis, Nov. 25 Fifty-three cases of beer, a dozen jugs and bottles of whisky, three druggists and four saloon keepers were gathered in by "plain clothes" men sent out by Chief Metzger yesterday to "keep an eye on" the lid. The beer and whisky and druggists were found at three drug stores in as many "little back rooms." The charges against each druggist is "running a blind tiger." The saloon men are charged with violations of the Nicholson law. The beer and whisky were locked up for evidence. The arrested men furnished bond.

The gathering in of the three drug-'

gists is somewhat of a departure in the "lid" movement, which has been carried on for many weeks by the police. Heretofore the men sent out on special Sunday duty were instructed to watch the saloons and the drug stores. Chief Metzger's orders yesterday were to watch the drug stores and saloons. The fact that special emphasis was laid on the drug stores brought three druggists into the clutch of the "plain clothes" men. With one eye on the saloons and the other eye on the drug stores, the police detailed for special duty spied several offenders with each organ.
