There Is mighty little to choose from nmong the four Maine college teams this year. Bates, Bowdoiu. Colby, and Unlver&ity of Maine are evenly matched and all unusually weak.

The Harvard coaching system is being roasted for not providing suitable defense for the plays which they knew were Carlisle's long suit.

Whenever the Indians tomahawk a powerful rival, everybody chatters about the ineligibility of the players. When the Indians lose, the same bunch admits that they are the best football attraction in the country.

George Capron, of Minnesota, is hailed as the season's greatest lclcker, although he Is, through Inexperience, inefficient in other departments of the game.

The eligibility of Wendell for the Harvard team has greatly revived the spirit of the players, who now feel that the team will have a rplendid secondary defense with Apollonio and Wendell behind the line.

"ermany Schultz, of Michigan, is aid to be the finest center rush in the ' rt. and one of the best the game has ever seen.

Kreuger. of Swarthniore. the shot putter, is also an adept at heaving the forward pass, having a record of fortyeight yards to his credit. He is not playing football this year, owing to an attack of typhoid last summer.

The Kurlhani varsity team started the scrimmage for this week ou a w-ft and muddy field Wednesday evening. Indiana's anti-cigarette law has not decreased the manufacture of "coffin nails" in the state however it may have affected their consumption. The census bureau has juct issued a bulletin which throws light on this interesting subject. In litOO there were 474 establishments for the manufacture of cigars and cigarettes in Indiana. In li0.j there were .j36 such establishments. In 10(mj the capital employed was $S0S,ssft. An increase of capital to $l."CS,niMi in 1T0G is noted. The value of the produce of the cis.ir manufactories of the Hoosier sate -a as $:'..(r.7."7x in 1?03 as against $2.n7.r7 in UiflO. It is ?afe to say flint, nonvithstandkis: the vigorous cia'e statute, a very large ner cent of the cigarettes made in Indiana, are consumed by the home market.
