The proposed investigation of boxing by the Marion county grand jury will probably be postponed Indefinitely. The Rev. Joshua Stansfield called on Prosecuting Attorney R R. in this country and today its entrance into any given city creates as much of a sensation as it did during the fhst few weeks after the play's initial production. The tragic beauty of its story and the impressive significance of its mounting, apparently contains an attraction that will never fail to draw audiences of unusual size. Although "The Darling of the Gods" has .been seen in the United States more than 1,200 times, in Lor.aon 300 and in Australia ISO, yet there is no evidence that its popularity is on the wane. A cast of exceptional strength Is one characteristic of this revival of the big Japanese drama, the company being a typical Belascoan one. Vaudeville at the Phillips. One of the interesting performers on the ve.udeville bill at the New Phi'lips this week Is "Red," the big dog owned by Holland and Vernon, the clever sketch team. A Des Moines, Iowa, paper, tells the following story about "Red": One trick pet dog probably saved a score of lives Monday morning during the street parade and review of the Iowa National Guard. "Red," the dog hero of the day, had his bull dog tenacity so well cultivated that at a cue from his trainer, he will make a grab at any moving object and hang on until given release cue. While standing with his master on Locust street during the most crowded hour, a horse, which became untied, started down the street on a run with hitching strap dragging. Given the cue "Red" made a record run. caught the lines and held for life until the horse was caught. "Red" is the trick dog of Mr. Holland, who is doing a character sketch at the Lyric. Judge Fox, of the Wayne circuit court called the cases of the State vs. Thomas Johnson. George Fredericks and Frank Smith this week. The defendants defaulted and the only action left for him was to declare the bonds forfeited. Johnson and Fredericks were under bond of SI'.OO each and Smith's bond was $400. Johnson and Fredericks were charged with petit larceny and Smith with pocket-picking. The comedians supposed to be broadly humorous in our travesties are either made up as Irishmen with green whiskers or Germans verging on imbecility. In France the stage butt is a caricature of the English globe trotter; in Germany a freak Imitation of our depictions of "Uncle Sam." Travel Magazine.

INSPECTING HIGH SCHOOLS. BLANKS AND INSTRUCTIONS ARE ' GIVEN IN REGARD TO THIS j WORK APPLICANTS FOR THE CERTIFIED CLASS. I Fassett A. Cotton, state superintendent of Public instruction, is sending out a few "thanksgiving packages' to county superintendents. Each bundle contains the following: School bulletin for teachers: discussion of the work outlined in agriculture for the country schools: two sets of bi-monthly examination questions; a directory of the Indiana school officials and blanks to oe Ubed in inspecting high schools which desire to be placed in the 'certified class." The new law requires that teachers beginning the work shall have completed certain high school work and provides for the granting of certificates to approved high schools. Certificates from these schools figure m the requirements for eligibility of any student who proposes to teach. In his letter addressed to the county superintendents Mr. Cotton says: "Inclosed you will find blanks to be used in inspecting the high schools of your county which are asking to bo p.aeed in the "certified" class. The members of the state board of education can not visit all of these schools, but in deciding what schools are eligible to certification the board will depend largely upon the reports submitted by the county superintendents 'As you know, graduates from cer tified high schools will have met the high school requirements of. the new law for teachers. A certified high school must meet all of the conditions ! now required of commissioned high 1 schools, with the exception of the j months each for four years or eight j months eac for four years or eight I months faf:ll for three years. The , State Board of Education prefers that the certified schools be conducted for four years of seven months terms; however, in instances where the cor porations have enough money to conduct the schools for three years of j eight months terms, such schools may be certified, provided they meet all the other requirements and cover the work outlined." coughs and colds everywhere in evidence," said a well-known physician recently, "people should be warned not to neglect these seemingly simple ailments. They should be nipped in the bud, before lung trouble, catarrh, and other complications are given a chance to get a grrip on the system. There is nothing new or startling in
this advice, but people have never fully realized what good advice it is." A very simple remedy which can be made at home for very little money, is suggested in the prescription given below. Simple as it is, it is very effective, curing colds and deep-seated coughs very quickly. Granulated Sugar Syrup 132 oz. Pinex -1-2 oz. Take three-quarters of a pound of granulated sugar, mix with water, heat and stir until thick syrup is formed. Get the 2 '2 ounces of pure Pinex from your druggist at a cost of fifty cents. Put the Pinex into a clean pint bottle, and fill it up with Granulated Sugar Syrup. This gives you a full pint of better medicine than yuii can buy already put up. Well corked, it keeps for many months. Take a leaspoonful dose every oue, two. or three hours. Pinex is the most concentrated form of compound extract of Norway white pine tar. It is peculiarly rich in guaiacol, the chemical element which makes the ozone of the pine forests so effective in curing consumption. It is barely possible that your druggist may not have Pinex, but he can easily get it for you, and will, if you ask him. It should be emphasized that no other pine tar or pine oil preparation is equal to the pure Pinex in any way. E ISLANDS IN WABASH Has Laid Claim to Crops on One of Them. OCCUPIED BY A SQUATTER. State Auditor John C. Billheimer has discovered that the State of Ini diana is the owner of several islands j in the Wabash River at various points i along its course, one of them being I an island located on the western edge of Gibson County on the Indiana- Illinois line. The others are located in the northern part of the state in Fountain, Parke and Warren counties. The island in Gibson county consists of eighty acres of overflow land known as Patoka Island, and occupied by Theodore W. Houchin, a "squatter" who secured his "squatter's right" from squatters that preceded him. The state auditor has laid claim to Patoka Island and has demanded onethird of the crops. At present most of the land is in corn. Theodore W. Houchin, the "squatter," does not claim the land and is willing to give the state its share of the crops. A Significant Prayer. "May the Lord help you make Bucklen's Arnica Salve known to all," writes J. G. Jenkins, of Chapel Hill, N. C. It quickly took the pain out of a felon for me and cured it in a wonderfully short tima." Best on earth for sores, burns and wounds. 25c at A. G. Luken & Co., drug store. CIVIL SERVICE SEEMS TO BE VERYATTRACTIVE Many Will Try the Examination, November 20. FOR CLERKS AND CARRIERS. Civil service seems to be Tery attractive to Richmond young men. Ev ery day Postmaster Spekenhier is confronted by young men who desire very much to enter Uncle Sam's service. There is a large number who will take the clerks' and carriers' examination Nov. 20. The general impression with those who take the civil service examination is to the effect that the local postoffice officials know whether or not they passed the examination. This Is not the case as none of the local civil service examining board know the grades until apprised from the general offices at Washington. Dancing Proves Fatal. Many men and women catch colds at dances which terminate in pneumonia and consumption. After exposure, if Foley's Honey and Tar is taken it will break up a cold and no serious results need be feared. Refuse auy but the genuine in a yellow package. A. G. Luken & Co. The first railroad in Missouri was a track five miles in length, laid from Kichmond to a point cn the Missouri river opposite Lexington, some time between 1S4D and ISol. It was made of timber, the rails being of sawed oak and the ties of hewed oak, and was operated by horse power , It expels all poisons, stimulates the internal organs, clean ?es the system and purifies the blood.
