PRISONERS' MAIL IS AS SACRED AS ANY Sheriffs Have No Right to Open Letters. AN ARREST IS MADE. Notwithstanding a contrary general opinion, sheriffs and other dustodians of jails cannot under any circumstances open letters addressed to prisoners within the confines of county jails. The matter has been brought to the attention of local postoffice attaches by the recent arrest of Fred F. Carter, of Lake county, a sheriff who opened a prisoner's mail without his consent, and who is now free but on $500 bail. Custodians han read the letters after they are opened, but until that time they have no right to assume this prerogative. HELPING SPIRIT BETTER.
RICHMOND AND RUSHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS WILL FURNISH A CURTAIN RAISER FOR THE AFTERNOON. Coach Vail put the varsity squad and the reserves through a good hard practice Thursday afternoon and the teams showed up in fine shape. There were more men out to practice Thursday evening than at any time since the first of the season. The team , is developing much more of the help- j ing spirit that Coach Vail has been ' trying for and the battle Saturday will be one of the fiercest that has ever j been seen on the Earlham gridiron, j The Richmond and Rushville high j school teams will try to create a iittle excitement as a curtain raiser for the ' big game. Rushville comes with a j good team but the local high school . boys are confident of holding them to a low score. High school games arc I usually full of fast and snappy p'aying, long runs and 6tar plays. The lineup for Earlham for Saturday is: Li. E. Hancock, Francis. I,. F. Walthall, Carroll. L. G. Swain. C. Stanley, Jones. R. G. Barrett. R. F. Thistlethwaite, (Capt.) R. E. Brttnner, Brubaker. Q. Wilson, Elliott, Beebe. R. H. Harrell. Li. H. Guyer. F. B.Wann. Calvert. FOLDER ISSUED FOR HIGH SCHOOL EVENTS Two Members of the Football Team Are Energetic. ARE READY FOR RUSHVILLE. A most unique scheme of advertising has been originated by Ilrry Karns and Glenn Harsh, two energetic members of the bisxh school football team. A small folder has been got out giving the schedules of the football and basket ball teams for the rest of this season, as well as the names and members of both teams. In addition to this they have secured the ads of several prominent merchants of the city ffr the folder, and will distribute the folders at all the games so that they can be used as reference for the games that have been played. The folder is very tastily prepared and reflects credit on the originators. The tenm is in readiness for the game Saturday with Rushville and expect to clean up on the visitors in great style. The next game of te basket ball team will be at Lynn, Ind., on the 15th. MISS BESSIE BURR SICK. WABASH MEETS ST. LOUIS.
THAT GAME WILL END THE SEASON FOR THE 'LITTLE GIANTS" OTHER NEWS OF THE HOOSI ER FOOTBALL FIELD. Indianapolis, Nov. S. Nothing but hard work goes at Butler college. The football men are being put through strenuous workouts each night in the hopes of getting the team in good shape for the next Saturday's game. Daniels, who played tackle in the game with Rose Poly, was back in suit yesterday, but he will be unable to get into the Earlham game. Wolf, the star guard, is out of the game temporarily. Tharpe, the other tackle, Is laid up with a sprained back and the squad has taken on a hospital look in general. Kitterman is still out with his wrenched knee. It was hoped that he would be able to play in the game with Earlham, but this is out of the question. Butler plays Hanover Nov. 1(5, and the cripples are all expected to be in shape for this game. The game with Hanover will come as a workout for the Thanksgivirr contest. The entire Shortridge and Manual Training High school football squads will be guests of the Butler management at the big Thanksgiving day game. Reports from Earlham Indicate that the Richmond institution will send a large body of rooters with the team when it comes to Indianapolis, Nov. 28. Now that Butler is back into intercollegiate athletics on a sound basis the Butler alumni and students are determined to keep it there. The Thanksgiving day game is an innovation with both schools. WABASH TO ST. LOUIS. Season at That Institution Closes With Saturday's Game. Crawfordsville, Ind., Nov. 8. The Wabash college football eleven went through fierce scrimmage practice on Ingalls Field Thursday afternoon in linal preparation for the big game scheduled with St. Louis university to be played Saturday afternoon at St. Louis. The scarlet is determined to make a great finish of its brilliant record for the season, as the football curtain at the local institution falls after the St. Louis game. No more games are scheduled, and the team will disband at the close of this game. Repeated efforts were made to arrange a contest with Notre Dame university, but the Catholics sidestepped all advances. j The last time Wabash played Notre Dame was In 1905. when It defeated j the South Bend men 5 to O. Since j this date no football game could be arj ranged with the Catnoilcs, although j Wabash has triumphed on the cinder track and field against them, and they in turn have defeated the "Little Giants" in baseball. PURDUE MEETS CHICAGO. Game Will be Played at the Windy City. Lafayette, Ind., Nov. S. Purdue put the finishing touches to the practice Thursday in preparation for the Chicago game Saturday. The general opinion prevails that the speedy Midway eleven's line is light, but reports received here show their line average from tackle to tackle to be 188 pounds. Purdue's line for similar positions shows an average of 177 pounds. The back field players of the two teams are evenly matched in weight, each tipping the beam near 165 pounds. I. U. IS AT MADISON. Players Left Bloomington in Pink of j Condition. 1 Bloomington, Ind., Nov. S. The Indiana University football squad left Bloomington Thursday on their trip j to Madison, Wis., where they play the Badger c-leveu on Saturday afternoon. All of the players who took the trip ! were in the pink of condition and will be able to give a s:ood account of themselves in the struggle with Coach Hutchin's men on Saturday. CHANGES AT FRANKLIN. Trick Plays Were Introduced in the Practice. Franklin, Ind., Nov. S. The practice Thursday was devoted mainly to trick plays. Coach Jones has to a large extent changed bis methods of working the men. With the new lineup, which is light but fast, line-bucking will not be of much use, and the new back field is counted on to make most of the gains on tricks. The awakened line will no longer have to bear the brunt of the games, but the new combination is expected to work better than the old. The new back field worked well last night, and it is hoped that the rest of the season will show an improvement DEPAUW MEETS MILLIKIN. Greencastle, Ind., Nov. S. WANT TWO SPECIAL CARS.
FAIR CO-EDS" WILL BE ALLOWED TO ACCEPT ESCORT OF YOUNG MEN SWEEPING AWAY ANOTHER TRADITION. A mass meeting was held in chapel at Earlham college Thursday for the purpose of securing a sufficient number to accompany the football team to Greencastle, whore Earlham plays Dc Pauw, Saturday, November !. The managers want V'."i rooters to go with the team, in order to get two special cars. If no more than 1 are scoured only one car will he available. A rate of $2 has been secured with the privileges of a stop over in Greencastle or Indianapolis until Sunday evening. The meeting was very enthusiastic. Coach Vail. Prof. E. P . Trueblood. Manager Wann of the team, the manager of the excursion. Miss Edna Trueblood, Miss Stone and Mr. Pennington, addressed the students. Vincent Nicholson was elected yell leader. A committee of seven was ap pointed to sell tickets to the student body and to the faculty. A large number have already signified their intention of accompanying the team. Miss Brown ,the governess of the girls at the dormitory has given permission to the "fair co-eds" to accept the escort of the young men. This is the first time that such permission has been given and the young men as well as the young women, appreciate this Tavor. afternoon Coach Brown rounded his men into final form for the game which will be played at Decatur, 111.. Saturday when DePauw will oppose James Millikin. BUSH WILL PUT AT Clever Little Short Stop Who Played Here Is Farmed By Detroit. TIGERS HAVE STRONG TEAM. BUSH MAY PROVE A BIG HELP TO THE INFIELD OF THE BROWNS SEASON IN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION WILL HELP HIM. "Ownie" Bush, the ball tosser, who held down short in such a clever manner for the South Bend Central league club last season and who played in Richmond a short time, will be a member of the Indianapolis Browns next season. Bush did such sensational work for his club during the past season that he was drafted by Manager Hugh Jennings of the Detroit Americans, but as the Tigers are strong in that position Jennings has decided to send Ownie to Indianapolis for seasoning. While Bush is considered good enough for the American league pennant winners, Jennings thinks that a year in the smaller league will do him a world of good and he has chosen Indianapolis as a school for him. Bush is a fast fielder and a fairly good hitter. He is a small chap and is an excellent waiter and usually forces the ooposing flinger to put the ball over the pan. Hs should greatly strengthen the infield. In case of his making good. Otto Williams will be shifted to second base. With Carr on first and Hopke doing duty at third it is claimed the Browns should present as good an infield as there i-? in the association. ANXIOUS TO BREAK If) Ft. Wayne Wants Membership In the Central. South Bend, Ind., Nov. S. Ft, Wayne, Ind., is making another desperate effort to greak into the Central league, and the chances could be worse. Despite the turndown given the representatives of the railroad city at the Toledo, O., meeting last month William Malley is of the opinion that he yet has a chance to bring about a deal by which he will secure a franchise.
