C. Whitney's piquant musical mixture. Isle ot fcpice, (which comes to the Gennett next Saturday, are said to have gone far to make the phenomenal success which has been the good fortune of the piece since its initial performance. In addition to this, however. Mr. Whitney has always taken care to give the production an environment of scenery, costumes and electnieal effects that are beautiful and provides a cast of clever comedians and vocalists, supported by a chorus of marked grace and beauty. Vaudeville at the Phillips. The Bradys, who are putting on a sketch at the New Phillips this week, are about as clever and prepossessing in appearance as any team visiting the house in recent months. Mrs. Brady makes a striking appearance. Amateurs are invited to take part in Friday night's contest. Mutual Help. The race of mankind would perish did they cease to aid each other. From the time that the mother binds the child's head till the moment that some kind assistant wipes the death damp from the brow of the dying we cannot exist without mutual help. and it i? alleged that he SOLDIERS OF TUBE WARS HAVE REUNION Notable Gathering Being Held At the Neighboring City Of New Castle. TWO HUNDRED ATTENDING. MEXICAN WAR, CIVIL WAR AND SPANISH WAR ALL REPRESENTED IN THE MEMBERSHIP PRESENT OFFICERS. i New Castle, Ind.. Oct. ::. Veteran soidiers of all wars are holding a conn ty reunion in this city today. Seeing an opportunity for all soldiers of one county to get together each year, the matter was agitated and four years ago resulted in the formation of the Henry County Soldiers' association. The fourth reunion is being held today, and close to ilj soldiers of the mst three wars were expected to attend, the veterans of the civil war, of course, being in the majority. Albert W. Saint was a lieutenant in Company D, Thirty-sixth Indiana, enlisting at Greensboro. He was in many of the principal battles of the war and was twice wounded. He is a rural mail carrier. He is president of the Henry County Historical society and takes a great interest in all affairs of this kind. Albert D. Ogborn was captain of Company G, One Hundred and Sixtyfirst Volunteers, which was organized in this city. With the regiment he went to Cuba and was in readiness for active service. At the present time he is a member of the Henry county bar. George Burton, who, with his wife resides in this city, is a veteran of two wars the Mexican and the civil war. In the Mexican war Mr. Burton saw fifteen months' service, bein a member of Company H of an Indiana regiment, enlisting at Sheibyville. In the civil war he saw twelve months' service as a member of Company A Thirtieth Indiana regiment. Mr. Burton is S.0, years of age. The officers of the Henry County Soldiers' association are Clark Gordon, president: John Thornburg. secretary, and Miles Anderson, quartermaster. Snow Banners. One of the most magnificent natural phenomena is a California snow banner. When a northern storm sweeps over the California Alps, which run from north to south, one can see sometimes a brilliant white cone shaped banner streaming before the wind from each mountain top. Tbe banners are often several miles long and are formed of the fine snow from mountain crevices, loosened by the storm and swept up over the north side of the mountaia top and blown toward the 60Uth. When the sun illuminates this snow dust, its brilliancy Is extraordinary. This phenomenon is rare. Its cau?e is to be sought in the peculiarly regular formation of the mountain to; and sides. These latter are slic'atly curved on the northern side, p-oi.ably by Ice action. This curvature hurls the Bnow up against the top of the mountain, where It Is shaped in the peculiar manner by the action and force of the wind. Translated From Nordstjernen, Copenhagen. has fitted up the top floor, as a RECEPTION BRINGS OUT LARGE NUMBER People of Milton Told Rev. F. C. McCormick Farewell Tuesday Night. SEVERAL SPEECHES MADE. the Mccormick family removes TO HARTFORD CITY AT ONCE, WHERE MR. McCORMICK HAS A PASTORATE. Milton, Ind.. Oct. :w. The Christian j church was crowded Tuesday evening by the friends of the Rev. F. C. McCor-; mick and family at a reception given in their honor. The church had been ; arranged for the social purpose and bowls of vari-colored chrysanthemums ; were used as decorations. Frank M. Jones presided when an informal program of music and speeches was given. Rev. Mr. Hawley of the Presbyterian church at Cambridge City made a beautiful speech of appreciation for the retiring pastor for whom he had formed a warm friendship. Rev. J. T. Scull, the new pastor of the Milton Methodist Episcopal church said that since he came to Milton recently, he had visited the homes of Methodist. Friends ana Christian church people vnd in all he heard a universal regret that Mr. McCormick was going to a new neld. Dr. I. F. Sweney and Cyrus Whiteley, also made good speeches. Mrs. McCormick received a share of praise for the successful pastorate just closing. Rev. McCormick responded in a tender way, which deeply affecl'-d his hearers, with the sincerity of his kindly message. 'Blest Be the Tie That Binds." was sung by the assembly, after which Rev. Mr. Hawley offered prayer. A social hour followed. during which the ladies of the congregation served light refreshments. Rev. McCormick and family left this morning for Hartford City, where he will serve the Christian church as pas - tor. The regret at their going by the i people of the community is measured 'only by the good wishes for their success in the new field. It is probable I that Mr. McCormick will return to fill one or two more appointments here. Orchestra Tuning Explained. Doubtless many theater goers hare wondered why it i3 a practice of orchestra musicians to make their appearance so far ahead of the time of beginning the performance and sit in their seats with nothing to do. Then, at a seeming given signal, all hands begin to "tunc up." torturing the ears of the early arrivals with a series of squeaks and scrapes. Tbe mystery was explained by an orchestra leader the other day. "The Instruments have to be in accord with the temperature of the house." said he.. "There may be several degrees difference between the temperature of the music room below stage and the notice itself. If we tuned our violins downstairs they would all be Cat when we take onr places In the orchestra. For that reason we come upstairs earlier and let our Instruments get the houre atmosphere before the actual tuning beging. New York Press.
