LOCAL STUDENTS LIKE PURDUE WOI

All Are in Good Health and Good Spirits and Are Being Kept Busy. HAVE RECEIVED UNIFORMS, PROF. R. L. SACKETT, UNTIL RECENTLY OF EARLHAM, DELIVERS AN ADDRESS AT THE CONVOCATION EXERCISES. A Richmond student at Purdue Uni versity writes the Palladium as follows: Everything is going nice'.y now, al tnough the work is very hard and no-t-eiuiies mucu iuajiug. e are an enjoying good health and good spirits, urn mes nere aoout tnree times as fast as it did at higi school, simply because they keep us busy. We have rece'ved our uniforms for drill and next Monday get our guns and commence the manual of arms. The band plays at dress parade every Wednesday afternoon, which makes it much nicer. Quite a bit of interest has been aroused by the fact that after Jan. 1 there will be a complete White steamer touring car here for testing purposes ana mesis worn, in h.i proDability there will be one or two gasoJ T . . 1 t line cars also At the convocation exercises this week Prof. R. L. Sackett, until recently of Earlham college, spoke. The exponent says of it: Professor Sackett, our new head of the Sanitary Engineering school, was introduced. He chose for his talk, "Inland Waterways," and with a very few words was in the midst of his subject. In the Mississippi valley district, the professor showed, were fifteen states having a population of 28,000.000 people, scattered over S00,000 square miles. In this district is raised annually more than 100,000.000 bushels of grain, while the out put of coal, cotton, etc., is much more than the whole country consumes. To get this over product to the market there is two ways, namely, by rail and water. The first is expensive, the second is not to be depended upon and gives the key of the address. Not only is the railroad expensive as compared with water, but railroad facilities are very poor, since it is shown that while the increase of products had grown 100 per cent in ten years, the railroad facilities for the same period have increased but 21 per cent. The cost of transporting one ton per mile today by rail is of a cent, while by water 1-10 is the maximum. Thus it is that this question is one of great importance. The state of New York is spending this year $101,000,000 for the i enlargement of the Erie canal, which is proof enough that it pays to use water for transportation.
