Detroit. Mich., Oct. 22. Aside from the batteries no changes will be made in the Detroit lineup next season. Manager Jennings says he will stand pat on the American League pennant winners of this year. He had contemplated making a change at first base, but Claude Rossman displayed such class during the world's series and
the hard campaign that neither Char- j lie Carr, Brown or any one else will ( be given a chance to fill his brogans at the first sack. It is the pitching staff that will J cause Hughey some worry. Four regulars have done fine work, but ho fig-1 ures that four is not enough. Ed ' Summers, the leading flinger on the
Indianapolis Browns, will very probably be the fifth man and Willets or Jones sixth. There is little chance of a change In the catching department. Schmidt and Payne were handicapped during the latter part of the season by injuries. They both hit good in the race for the flag, but fell down woefully in the fight for the world's title. However; Hughey hadfaith in both of them and they will be behind the bat next spring for the Tigers. The locals will train at Hot Springs and Little Rock, Ark., next spring.

Says It Is Entitled to Baseball Championship.
Dunkirk, Ind., Oct. 22. Dunkirk claims the Independent State base ball championship for 1907, and its record supports the claim. The nine has beaten all the best teams in Indiana and hos, moreover, won two games from the Cincinnati Reds. The Dayton Central league team was also humbled by the strong local aggregation. With such good pitchers as Hay, Perdieu, Romine, Grey and Carmichael Dunkirk has the best staff in the state outside of Indianapolis, of course. Other strong players are Wolfe, Hall, Wills and Bumgartner. All the pitchers are good men in the infield and outfield and play in every game.

His Dear Old Mother. "My dear old mother, wl o Is now
eighty-three years old, thrives on Electric Bitters," writes W. B. Brunson, of , Dublin, Ga. "She has taken them for j about two years and enjoys an excellent appetite, feels strong and sleeps j well." That's the wy Electric Bit- : ters affect the aged, and the same happy results follow in all cases of female weakness and general debility. Weak, puny children too, are greatly strengthened by them. Lost Monday's Game to the Cincinnati Reds. Muncie, Ind., Oct. 22 Indiana's baseball champions, of Dunkirk, last to the Cincinnati Reds of the National league, at Shamrock park yesterday afternoon by a score of 7 to 5. The game did not come up to expectations until the seventh inning, when the Dunkirks pulled ahead of the Reds who were forced to put forth their best efforts in the two succeeding innings.
The Way It Is Patched, Varnished and Powdered. A balloon consists of patches of cloth about a yard square sewed securely together. This is not because of any difficulty in making the fabric of a globular shape, for that could easily be done if the pieces were shaped like the skin on the section of an apple. The reason is that no absolutely reliable fabric has yet been invented, and there Is always the possibility of the balloon bursting. Should this happen to one of these patches, the escape of gas will not be dangerously rapid, as it would be if larger sections were used. When the balloon Is made it is carefully varnished, three coats being given, and each being allowed to dry thoroughly before the next Is applied. If one coat Is left moist the fabric will be attacked by a species of dry rot, which will make It as fragile as the paper this Is printed on. In the early days of ballooning many fatal accidents were due to this defect, but now the utmost care Is exercised. When a balloon Is packed up for a Journey, powdered chalk is sprinkled between the folds, as otherwise they would stick together and tear. Pearson's Weekly.

A Criminal Attack on an inoffensive citizen is frequently made in that apparently useless little tube called the "appendix." The Word "Ale." What could le more English than the word ale? It carries us back to the banquets of our dead ancestors in Walhalla, and some of its compounds open up vistas into that old England which is fast disappearing, becoming a tale that is told, obsolete itself. Such are alelmsh, a tavern sign: ale conner. "an officer appointed in every court leet and sworn to look to the assize and goodness of bread, ale and beer." Ahcost, the name of a kind of tansy used to flavor the rustic's home brewed, has a good old English look. Yet it bears witness to the mongrel nature of the speech of this mongrel nation, cost being from the Greek kostos, a savory herb of species unidentified. Alegar Is eager or sour a'e, used as vinegar. Hard on Joseph.
Outside the photographer's establishment in the little country town 6tood two figures evidently father and son. At last they went in. "Ol want yer to take a picture of our Joseph, 'ere, maister, said the fond parent, and Joseph was promptly placed In a chair and requested to compose his features for awhile. The photographer's specialty was quick developing, and soon several negatives lay before the purchaser. The father gazed uneasily at them j for a space and then said nervously: "You say in the window, maister, as 'ow yer can touch up the pictures to give any effect agreeable to yer customers." i "That is so," assented the artist readily, hastening to add. with his best
professional smile, "but In your son's i
case any retouching Is absolutely un necessary."
"Ow. aye!" said the father. "That be f
main like Joseph, but to tellee truth he's got to send un wi his testimonials for a job, an I'd like yer to alter his photo to make him look honest like!" London Mail.
Two house martins built their nests against an attic window of a farm, to which the birds had come for several successive years. Last spring, however before they arrived an enterprising sparrow took up her abode in ona of the nests. Shortly after this the martins returned as usual and one day the farm people noticed that the hole ot the nest which the sparrow occupied had been blocked up. Next morning a boy climbed up to ascertain the meaning, and not finding any outlet broke away a part of the nest to find the poor sparrow dead on her eggs. The house martins had walled her up for daring to take possession of their house.
After the rise in the price of bread and coal comes the news of a probable increase in the cost of whiskey in England. The two reasons assigned for the expected rise are the poor barley crop and the increased price of fuel.
