To aid in solving the greafqueptions that confront capital on one hand and labor on the other, the Friends of the .world and particularly in America, have a great roissio?'. to perform; a mission which the are well able to fill if thev but turn their attention in that direction. This was the concensus of opinion of several speakers who talked before the Five Years meeting at its sessions Thursday night, when the general topic of the social mission of Friends was under consideration, Edward Grubbs of London, leading the discussion. Needs Immediate Attention. Mr. Grubbs maintained, that among

the many Questions of the day which needed solving, and in which ihe Friends were actively participating, that between capital and labor is probably the greatest and ne-ids immediate attention. Friend's he said should better steer clear of the .stain of ill gotten wealth that they might better stand take a stand for reform. The cuestion is one of the yeast confronting Americans today and the immoral use of wealth is rapidly increasing. Friends were admonished to not adopt the world's cods of getting on, the siezure of everything in sight, with no care of how such an operation was carried on. Friends' principles should be carried on by Friends in their business lealings. The principle of truth snould reign uppermost in the minds whil? performing their business duties. Should Enter Politics. Friends everywhere who have hcetofore shrunk from actively participating in politics, and attempting to seek office should prepare themselves to fill the great niches in governmental affairs that the morpentus questions confronting the nation might be solved, it was said. It is the duty of the Quakers to take greater interest in government affairs and aid in remedying evil conditions as they
Lexist today. Seeking the office for the remuneration to b-3 received was condemned, but Friends he said, m a : IV V 1010 Main Slreet Westcolt Hotel Building Phone 1569
should seek the office for the good they might do in it Margaret Carey Speaks. Margaret Carey of Baltimore yearly meeting, who led the discussion on Mr. Grubbs paper, spoke along' much the same lines. She maintained that the greatest problem of today is that existing between the employer and the employe and faaid that the F-lenis everywhere were doing much to solve this. The actual want of millions of laboring men and the millions heaped up on the other side is a direct contradiction to the spirit of Christianity and should be :emedied. Levi Mills of Wilmington, with spirit decried the conditions. He said that it was just as wrong for capital to combine to secure cheaply the services of the laboring men as it is to gamble with card? for money. President Roosevelt and his officers have recognized that the spirit of Christianity must be brought into service, if the great questions confronting the country today are solved, and solved
j satisfactorily. They have arrived to I the conclusion that the nan stealing millions shall be sent to -he penitentiary as quick as the man stealing chickens. Friends, he said should take such a place in the world that the evil practices now being perpetrated upon the toiling millions are completely driven out. ; Elbert Hamilton of Iowa yearly meeting, and who for the past three terms has served as a member of the Iowa legislature, said that the fundamental principle on which to solve the questions of consequence is to do it through the legislative halls. There s an opening fer Christian men here, and they can as well preach the gospel through the laws they promulgate as they can in the pwlpit. Will be Continued. Inter-yearly meeting correspondence will be continued, according to the decision arrived at Thursday night, but the epistles next year and the years following will be of a different order than those written in the past. Charles E. Tcbbetts made a report, analyzing past reports, and the reports of this year, and it was generally conceded that they are entirely too long, and overdo the mission for which they were intended a concise report of the work accomplished by each yearly meeting each year. Mr. Tebbetts' report showed that scarcely anything is gained by the present system of epistles, as they contain but little news of direct interest to sister yearly meetings. In reply to a series of questions sent to them, the various yearly meetings viewed the inter-yearly meeting correspondences with different attitudes. A few maintained that time should not be taken to read them but they phould be made a matter of record. None however even hinted that the letters should be discontinued. All meetings maintained that they should be concise, brief, crisp and should "say something." New England yearly meeting this year sent the longest epistle of the year and for that reason the New England delegation was the butt of much joking. The epistles should be of about two hundred words in length. Epistolary Correspondence. Lindley D. Clark of Washington, D. C, a member of the Baltimore yearly meeting read a short report of the condition of the epistolary correspondence. As the system is almost as old as the Friends' church itself, it should not be dropped he maintained, but carried on in the fut.ire with greater care than has been given to it in the past. Publishing House Delayed. Friends of America are not yet ready to establish a publishing house according to the report of the business committee Thursday afternoon. The question of Friends bible literature in the Sunday school will not be finally decided until tlie next session of the Five Year's body according to a decision arrived at. A committee of five was named to thoroughly and conscientiously consider the matter in the meantime and make a report at the next session. This committee is composed of Thomas Wood, Elwood Cox, Richard Haworth, J. Lindley Spicer and Albert J. Brown. The question has been given much consideration in recent months by the Friends as it is generally thought that the denomination should have seme I
Sunday school literature reflecting Quaker thought. Evangelistic Methods. The Friends' bible Institute held at Plainfield two years ago presented a proposition to the Five years bodv to consider plans for a closer union of evangelistic methods. Plans are requested to be formulated by the Five Years meeting. The matter was referred to the evangelistic and church extension committee for consideration. Robert E. Pretlow, of Brooklyn, N. Y., spoke Thursday afternoon on Evangelistic methods, and main'ained that there is a brod field for improvement on Friends evangelistic methods of today. He showed that evangelization is not a special form of religious meeting but a presentation of the gospel in such a manner that all those standing without the light would be brought into it. Sensational methods of evangelization were scored by Mr. Pretlow. Decries Sensationalism. He maintained that sensationalism is no product of legitimate evangelization. Trances and other outward expressions tended to weaken the church wherever they occurred. Many of the meetings where such actions occur are shallow, and do not comply with the true spirit of evangelization. Manifestations of hysteria is not Christianity, but manifestations of disease. Concentration of work is the one way of carrying on systematic evangelistic effort. Richard Haworth, led the discussion and presented many convincing thoughts on the question. Sant'irl Neave of Baltimore maintained that pavilions- should be erected at the popular pleasure resorts that those leaving the church, might be reached and interest revived.
