SOME SHIFTS MADE IN EARLHAM LINE

Quaker Foot Ball Team Will Take on Wittenberg Saturday Afternoon.

REGULARS ARE IN DANGER.

NO CHANGE IS MftOE IN CENTRAL CIRIUIT All the Club Managers Decide To Remain In.

MEETING A LOVE FEAST.

ENTRE NOUS DEFEAT THE BORTOH TEAM Still at the Head of the Richmond League.

IDLEMAN'S ARE SECOND.

Earlham is working hard in preparation for the Wittenberg game Saturday. Some shifting of the men has been done and it looks as though some of the regulars would have a hard time to retain their positions. Denham is being tried out at center and gives promise of becoming a valuable man after he has a little more experience. Swain is filling the left guard position and is rapidly forging to the front, especial'y on the attack, as he is getting more confident and faster. Elliott seems to be the right man at quarter, as he is cool and courageous in emergencies and has very quick and certain judgment in his selection of plays. Capt. Thistlethwaite at right tackle is the mainstay of the team on defense, as he has the faculty of being "always in the way." The back field is entirely new, but is being rapidly broken into team play, which is their weak point, as the men are excellent individual players, but don't help each other to Coach Vail's satisfaction. Harrell runs hard and is a very difficult man to stop when he haB the assistance of the other backs. Guyer, Wann, Harrell, Bruner and Calvert are fighting for their positions, and it is impossible to pick the winners at this date, though Saturday's game wll give the coach a good line on all of them. PURDUE. Lafayette, Ind., Oct. 18. The Purdue team is in the midst of a stiff course of training and Coach Turner is working the players harder than ever in order to get a formidable aggregation together for the Illinois game Nov. 2. Football fans have been unable to get a line on the Suckers' strength, but their contest with Chicago Saturday will serve as a basis for comparison. INDIANA. Bloomington, Ind., Oct. IS. The varsity and freshmen football teams of I. IT. lined up Thursday afternoon and after a stiff scrimmage quit with honors even, each eleven securing a marker although the men did not run out when they had a chance to make a touchdown. Coach Sheldon is developing a new defense for breaking up all forward passes and quarter back kick plays.

Toledo, O., Oct. IS Magnates of all the clubs of the Central League met here Thursday in the annual fall ses

sion to close up the affairs of the past j season and the session was turned in-J to a love feast instead of warm ses-j

! sion as anticipated. Reorganization of'

the league which has been rumored for several weeks past did not pan

out further than lengthy discussion on the subject, all the clubs putting up

their forfeit money and voting to stay in, hence the league will remain intact. I

for at least another year.

NEW CASTLE T

TWO HARD CONTESTS

Will Take on Cincinnati and Connersville.

GETS TEAM NEXT SEASON.

New Castle, Ind., Oct. 18. Two hard fought battles will characterize the closing of the baseball season in this city and fans will be given food for thought during the winter. The games will be played next Sunday and the following Sunday, both in this city. Next Sunday the Krell-French team will play the Cincinnati All-Professionals, an aggregation of league stars, and the locals will make a desperate effort o capture the game. Dunbar, who has given better satisfaction than any pitcher who has worn the New Castle uniform this season, will be in the box, and several players have been secured to strengthen the team, including First Baseman Connery of Springfield, Third Baseman Vaughn of Leavenworth, Left Fielder Maloney of Youngstown and Right Fielder Oaks of Cedar Rapids. On the following Sunday the last game of the season will be playe with the crack Connersville team, and both teams will fight hard to take the final game. The season will then close and it is expected to have a fast team representing New Castle next year.

BUTLER. Indianapolis, Oct. IS. The Outlook on the Butler college gridiron for success in the game tomorrow with Rose roly is very unpromising. The Butler team will be greatly crippled and the best Coach McKay hopes for is to hold Rose to a low score. Butler will be without the services of six men owing to injuries and disqualifications by faculty ruling.

Lexington, Ky., Oct. IS. Through the defeat of Tempus Fugit in the first race here Thursday the talent was given the hardes blow of the meeting. After scoring several times for first heat the starter let the field go with Tempus Fugit in the rear and in a break as he passed under the wire. Before Geers could get him on his feet the other horses were a quarter of a mile in the lead and he was "hopelessly shut out. Florence and St. Peter also caught the flag in the first heat, which was full of mishaps.

WABASH. Crawfordsvllle, Ind., Oct. 18. The TVabash college football eleven went through the last herd scrimmage workout in final preparation for the big battle with Michigan University last evening under the careful supervision of Coach Cayou. The scrimmage between the regulars and "scrubs" was lively throughout and the varsity played in the best form that they have displayed this season. The general opinion prevails here that the Little Giants have their golden opportunity of winning a national reputation next Saturday and at the same time the belief prevails that if the team which will represent the scarlet against Michigan on this occasion can not turn the trick. It never can be done.

Grand Opening Geo. H. Muey's Saloon, cor. South H and Liberty Ave., Saturday Night.

A German company has begun building a new stone pier at Tangier, which will greatly increase the harbor facilities of that port, and a French company will shortly begin a pier at Casablanca and one at Saffi on the Atlantic coast. During the last four months of 1906 the Moorish government called for bids for the contract for supplying Tangier with water.

Dunkirk, Ind., Oct. IS. The Dunkirk ball club, champions .f Indiana, will go to Muncie Sunday afternoon, where they will play the Shamrocks. On Monday afternoon the locals will meet the Cincinnati Reds of the National league, at he Magic City. This will be the third meeting of the teams this season, the home boys having downed the leaguers in two games, one by a score of 12 to 7 and the other 3 to '. Harry Hay, the underhand twirler, who will probably te given a tryout with the Reds next season, will again be on the mound for the Dunkirkites. Catcher Wolfe and Outfielder Gray are being watcher by the league managers.
