Felix T. McWhirter, a Prohibition Leader, Protests to Bankers' Association.
HAS RECEIVED 235 REPLIES. OF THESE 195 ARE OPPOSED TO SERVING LIQUOR SUBJECT TO BE BROUGHT BEFORE THE CONVENTION IF NECESSARY. Indianapolis, Oct. 17. Felix T. McWhirter, a leading prohibitionist of Indiana and president of the People's state bank of Indianapolis, is protesting against the serving of liquor at a banquet which is to be one of the features of the State Bankers" association convention in Indianapolis next week. Mr. McWhirter, wno is a member of the prohibitionist national committee, has addressed a letter to each member of the association in whicn he protests against the use of liquor at the coming banquet. In each letter a card was inclosed on which three questions were asked as follows: "Do you oppose liquors or beer at i our state convention? "Are you willing to have liquor dis pensed with? "Do you want beer served at these i banquets?" Mr. McWhirter says he has received 235 replies and of this number 195 members of the association say they are oppose to the liquor service. The association has 700 members. At the beefsteak dinner given by the association at last year's convention, beer was served. Mr. McWhirter declares that if it becomes necessary, the subject will be brought before the convention when it meets next week. Among other things he says in his le.ter: "In conversation with Secretary Andrew Smith the question was raised as to the desfre of the Indiana bankers with reference to serving beer at the beefsteak dinner to be given In connection with the annual meeting.' In view of the custom of other associations which do not serve liquors and the growing sentiment of communities from whom we, as bankers, ask patronage, it seems to me of great importance for us to set a high standard and instruct the committee to cut out the liquor service. Our la3t meeting was severely criticised on account of this feature. The business of banking is so sensitive to public de mand that it hardly seems to some of us that we should offend the .growing number of patrons who disapprove of such actions." NOTICE TO OUR CUSTOMERS. We are pleased to announce that Foley's Honey and Tar for coughs, colds and lung troubles is not affected by the National Pure Food and Drug law as it contains no opiates or other harmful drugs, and we recommend it as a safe remedy for children and adults.
