Oil Octupus to Fall Back Upon An Elaborate Legal Defense of Its Rights. PROFITS PUT ON RECORD. WtLLIAM G. ROCKEFELLER TELEGRAPHED THAT HE IS WANTED BEFORE FRIDAY THE STANDARD HAD INSIDE INFORMATION. New York, Oct. 17. Counsel for the Standard Oil company have prepared ; an elaborate defense in the government's suit for dissolution of the oil combine, which, they tay, will be developed in its entirety. The government's attorneys have concluded taking their testimony. The Standard's lawyers lawyers said that they had not sought to adduce testimony on cross-examination of officials and empi0yes of the so-called oil trust which would refute the allegations in the federal complaint, but had deferred in bringing out much evidence until later when it could be produced continuously and in bulk. No intimation was given of the nature of the testimony which counsel for the Standard said would be brought out. A telegram was - sent to William G. Rockefeller, assistant treasurer of the Standard Oil com pany of New Jersey, last night by counsel for the Standard that the government desired him as a witness before the adjournment next Friday for a month. Frank B. Kellogg, counsel for the United States, spent an entire day in placing on the record statements submitted by several witnesses showing the profits made by the Standard in the different localities of the country. Statements were produced showing that the Standard not only secured information concerning competitive shipments in the United Stales, but in foreign countries. . . j o. a Kind. COMMISSION WILL MEEUT MARION It Is Alleged C, C. & L. Is Discriminated Against. POINTS IN CONTENTION. Marion, Ind., Oct. 17. For the first time since its establishment the Indiana railroad commission will hold a meeting in Marion Monday, October iS, when the charges of the Marion Commercial club against the P., C, C. it St. L. and the Clover Leaf will oe jjear(j The matter to be investigated is the alleged discrimination of the P., C, C. & St. L. and the Clover Leaf against the C, C. & L. It is charged that they refuse to deliver to or receive from the "Straight Line'' freight shipped out by or billed to local manufacturers, thereby greatly inconveniencing them in loading and unloading. The manufacturers made complaint to the Commercial club, which, acting for the individual manufacturers and merchants, is now the plaintiff in the case. The defendants were served with notice some time ago to make answer to the complaint or grant the redress of grievance asked by the Commercial club, but it is evident that they have not done the latter. Evidence will be heard by the commission and if it is found that refusal to exchange shipping facilities with the C, C. & L. was for arbitrary reason the commission has power to make a,n order correcting the abuse immediately or punish the roads by severe fines. It is the contention of the Clover Leaf that it cannot exchange freight with the C, C. & L., because of being forbidden to do so by the P., C, C. & St. L., with whom it jointly owns the track connecting with the C, C. & L. There is a nearsightedness of parents and pupils that Is criminal. It contributes to delinquency and. as 1 think, is within the status of and subject to court punishment. The college theory is that the fraternity chaps are the elect, but life does not show that. An eastern legend says that as Solomon one day was consulting with his grand vizier, the angel of death appeared and cast a searching look at Solomon's companion. The startled vizier immediately begged the great king to lend him a certain magic rug on which whoever sat could be transported in an instant to the remotest part of the earth. The king granted the request. The vizier stepped upon the rug and bade it transport him to the center of the desert of Arabia. It bore him away instantly. The angel of death stopped a moment in his flight to say to Solomon: "I looked at that man so closely because I was surprised to find him here, as I had been commanded to summon his soul and was told that I should find him in the center of the great de;ert."
