GREED FOR GAIN FOE OF GODLINESS
Mad Desire for Wealth and Display Has Driven it From the Heart. EVANGELIST TALKS PLAIN. EMPHASIZES THE TEACHING OF JESUS IN REFERENCE TO THE VALUE OF THE SOUL AS COMPARED TO THE WORi-D. Evangelist Shannon's address at the U. B. church revival Monday night was based on Deut. 0:0-12. He spoke in part as follows: Parents should be the religious teachers of their own children. Moses exhorted the people to teach the word of the Lord diligently to their children. They were to talk of them when sitting in the house and when walking by the way. How many of us make the word and works of God the topics of conversation when sitting in our homes? What are the main topics of our conversation any way? Why not talic as familiarly with our families about God and His dealings with man as about anything? Why do we give the greatest attention to questions of minor Importance? More than all education, all patriotism, all fraternalIsm, all wealth, is the knowledge of God and Jesus, that gives a full sweep of victory now and life eternal. Life here is a farce except in the light of life eternal. We speak of our wonderful prosperity, our fine schools, our magnificent institutions and our high grade civilization and we speak of them as though, we think they are of real value when in fact all these together cannot give eternal life to one nor can they even begin to save one. These things all belong to the things that are seen and are temporal. We fire becoming a nation of idolaters, worshiping the creation and denying the creator. Moses warned the people to be careful that when they reached the land of plenty they did not forget the God who had delivered them. What we call prosperity has always been accompanied by ungodliness. The greed for gain and dispay has driven godliness from hearts, homes and cdmmon wealths. Hundreds of men in Indiana and may be some of them live In Richmond, who were formerly prayerful, godly men, have turned away from the holy life and from God on v account of the greed for gain. They are not only neglecting their own spiritual welfare and that of their families, but are aiding in oppressing others whom they should have helped. When every man helps to bear every other man's burden, then burdens will be light and we can talk to each other about things eternal. Some men try to excuse themselves in their greed by saying that they must provide for their own, or else they are worse than infidels. Yes, that is true, but provide what? Are our own provided for when educated, as we say in the knowledge of this age and world, and when we have accumulated for them much of the things that we call wealth? WThat are all these worth? They are as nothing. No man has provided for his own until he has provided for their spiritual needs. Id rather be the poorest and most ignorant person In Richmond tonight, in possession of eternal life and with God's perfect love for my fellowman in mv life than tn hf tho nun orillpf? ! the richest and most highly cultured and "yet destitute of the life and love of God. Jesus said, "What shall it profit a

man if he should gain the whole world and lose his own soul?" I'd like to ask what he would gain if his soul was saved and he should have the world. He would be no more surely saved and would soon leave the world of time and sense anyway. We need to learn that we can get along real well without this world. Hard Times In Kansas. THEATRICAL CALENDAR. NEW PHILLIPS. 4 Week of Oct. 14 Vaudeville. GENNETT. Oct. 15 "Humpty Dumpty." Oct. 19 Adelaide Thurston. week of Oct. 22 Murray Comedy Co. Nov. 2 -"Isle of Spice." Soon Alberta Gallatin. "The Girl From Out Yonder." That brilliant young actress, Adelaide Thurston, will be the attraction at the Gennett next Saturday matinee and night, presenting for the first time in this city her play, "The Girl From Out Yonder," a comedy drama in four acts, with the scenes laid along the coast of Maine, and the characters those of the fisher-folk who make their living in those places. The play is full of genuine comedy and heart throbs. Miss Thurston plays the part of a yOung girl who has lived all of her seventeen years among the surroundings of a lighthouse on a rocky island off the coast of Maine. She is somewhat deficient in the graces and manners of society, but is strong in whole-hearted honesty of purpose. She loves her father and she loves the sea. The character is like none that Miss Thurston has ever been seen in before, but it is fresh, wholesome and as attractive as is the personality of the actress herself. "Humpty Dumpty." given I Vaudeville at the Phillips. It has been a long time since any team appearing at the New Phillips in vaudeville has secured a warmer welcome than was accorded Tegge and Daniels Monday night. They are German comedians not the common make-believe sort but high grade German entertainers, capable of interpreting the German-American character, making the ludicrous side prominent, to the delight of the audiences. Both the dialogue and the musical numbers are pleasing and the team were repeatedly recalled. But there is much else on the bill to entertain and please, including Walker and Burrell. who have a comedy musical act, featured by a sample of Chinese orchestra music; the Beatties, famous club jugglers; Billy Moore, black face comedian, singer and dancer; the illustrated song, "Goodbye Mamie," sung by Cal Lankert. and two motion pictures entitled "Boy Accuser" and "A Trip in a Balloon." Both are new and of Intense interest and serve to show the unaTelous skill that Is employed in producing effects of this nature. The lat mentioned picture is especially amusfnsr. There was s laree audience out Monday night and the week's business promises to be heavy. Wednesday there will be a souvenir matinee. Rheumatism is caused by the improper working of the kidneys. Trials of the New York Hostess Who Hires Operatic Singers. Not so very long ago a soprano who had been engaged to sing at one of the largest houses on Fifth avenue, with her maid, was ushered into the room reserved for the artists. She was slow in removing her wraps and concluded after she was part of the way out of them that it was time for the hostess to welcome her. So she told her maid to put them on again after she had inquired of one of the servants where the lady was. When he saw the preparations for departure he rushed in haste to the hostess. She had been detained at the dinner table, as a dinner of very elaborate character was preceding the musical. It was difficult for her to leave her guests. She reached the hall, however, just as the singer's ample form was disappearing through the portiere. "Ah. Mrs. Smith." the singer said. "Then I am in the right house? I was going out to tell my coachman we had made a mistake, else you would have been at the door to meet me." The hostess looked as if she would like to speed her flight into the open, but her guests were soon to arrive, and she did not dare risk offending the star attraction at her biggest party of the season. Some of the singers make It a condition that no other woman shall be engaged and no musicians of any kind without consulting them. A young hostess sent out cards to invite her friends to hear a great prima donna sing. Afterward she heard from her friends of all kinds of wonderful performers that she might also have en gaged. As the money question played no part in her plans the young woman began to engage them. By the time the night of the party arrived she had. in addition to the soprano, a band of choir boys who would look beautiful marching down her marble stairway, a band of Venetian gondoliers who ine prima aonna arriveu ana oeneiu In the artists' room this Job lot of musical entertainers. The hostess hurried in to greet her. "But surely," the prima donna said, "you don't need me when you have so much for your guests?" The singer was in earnest. She was perfectly willing to go home and lose her -$3,000 fee rather than be part of such a musical vaudeville as the Inexperienced hostess had planned. Out of gratitude because she consented to remain to make the party a success, the young matron sent the prima donna a diamond bracelet the next day. New York Sun. The Spleen. The spleen?
