REVOLT OF CUBANS

PROMPTLY BULKED

A Conspiracy Is Said to Be Backed b) ipitalists Of W reel GOVERNOR MAG 0 ON BUSY.

SECRET POLICE HAVE BEEN ENGAGED IN SHADOWING REBELS AND OFFICIALS BELIEVE MOVEMENT IS ENDED.

Havana, Sept. 26. A conspiracy to start a revolutionary movement In Cuba has been discovered. Under instructions issued by Governor Magoon a number of suspicious persons, ave been shadowed for several days. It is said that the movement Is backed by New York capitalists. Governor Magoon has been aware for several days past that certain individuals were conspiring against the government, but he did not attach to the matter much importance owing to the fact that these persons were under constant surveillance, and that the Cuban rural guard and the American forces in the island had been so assigned as to be able to crush any such movement in a few hours time. A report was current Wednesday that a number of local marchants had met for the purpose of informing the world of the actual situation in Cuba. Careful investigation proved this rumor to be absolutely untrue. Revolutionists Shadowed. It is a fact that certain parties here have been conspiring for the purpose of starting a revolution simultaneously In the extreme eastern and the extreme western provinces of Cuba, and members of the secret police have

been shadowing a number of Cubans prominent politically and these Indivi

duals were not molested for several reasons, one being the fact that they were seemingly well supplied with

money which they were distributing

In the provinces where they were

working for recruits to their movement, and the government was anxious to locate the source whence this money, came. This was a complete mystery. There Is reason to believe that this conspiracy has been going on for several weeks past. The recent miniature uprisings near Santiago and CanabuanI were due to too great enthusiasm on the part of some of the partisans In the movement, who failed to await the signal from the chiefs in Havana. It is declared that Masso Parra, a native born Cuban, has been the leader of the activity. Parra is known to have led several Latin American revolutions In the past. He tried to enter Cuba after being expelled two years ago, but the Palma administration feared his purpose in returning was to organize a revolution and would not permit him to land. Parra Lands in Cuba. Parra landed in Cuba several weeks ago and no objection to his coming was made. It Is persistently stated here that the money to finance this revolution was furnished from Wall street. There are reports current that a certain American who was in Cuba recently and spent four days in Havana Is connected with the conspiracy. The movements of this man were mysterious. No matter who is behind the attempt, Governor Magoon Is prepared to stamp it out immediately. Gen. Pino Guerra, Gen. Jose Miguel Gomez and the Cubans who led the revolution against the former President Palma are earnestly opposed to this movement and stand ready to take the field with the government forces should an outbreak actually occur. It Is not considered that Parra would be able to influence any numerous elements to follow him, because in spite of the fact that he has a certain recognized ability as a revolutionary agitator, he deserted the Cuban insurgents during the war with Spain and joined the Spaniards against his own countrymen.

Subtract 45 From 45 and Have 45 as a Reraeiadrr. If you Tvere asked to subtract 43 from 43 and have 45 as a remainder, you would be likely to say that the proposition Is either a "catch or an impossibility. But here it is, set down in plain figures, and you will find that it is neither one nor the other: 987654321 12346S789

SCHOOL IS CLOSED;

TIME IS INDEFINITE

Diphtheria Situation at Whitewater Remains Unchanged at This Time.

PEOPLE ARE ALARMED.

EVERYTHING POSSIBLE IS BEING DONE TO PREVENT A SPREAD OF THE DISEASE QUARANTINE AND PATROL.

Whitewater, Ind., Sept. 2(1. The diphtheria situation remains unchanged. After one week of fruitless effort to open the public school it was decided to close it Indefinitely. The people In general are alarmed as never before In the history of the community and despite the untiring efforts of teachers, school and health officials, there seems to be a gradual spread of the fear of contagion and the parents cannot consent to sending their children to school.

The delay In opening of one week was thought at first to be sufficient, then when on the day of opening the little Parker girl was taken ill at school surrounded by nearly forty children, caused the closing of the primary room. The grammar and high school rooms remained open during the remainder of the week with very small attendance. On Friday the little daughter of Principal Joe C. Burgess, was taken ill and the trouble proved to be diphtheria. Two of Mr. Rhodes children west of town had sore throat, although not pronounced diphtheria, all this and the general feeling of alarm brought about the closing of the school for an indefinite period. Everything possible is being done to prevent the spread of the disease and with due care it seems that there is now little chance for any new cases. The town is carefully patrolled by the marshal and all children are kept off the streets and the affected homes are under a strict quarantine. Those affected are completely isolated from all others. With all these precautions It

is current opinion that in a short time the community will be free from the

disease.
