Midland Lyceum Bureau Secures Well Known Rector, Formerly Pastor St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
RETIRES AFTER EASTER; RELATIONSHIP THE SAME.
Rev. Dr. J. Everist Cathell Already in the Class of Lecturers Whose Services Are In Great Demand.
Speaking of the Rev. J. Everist Cathell, formerly rector of St. Paul's Episcopal church, Richmond, the DesMoines, Iowa, Register and Leader says: Rev. J. Everist Cathell has accepted the proposition made him by the Midland Lyceum bureau of Chicago, Des Moines and Kansas City and has closed a contract to devote his time next year to the lecture field. In pursuance of this arrangement he will retire from the pulpit of St. Paul's Episcopal church immediately after Easter. The status of his relationship with the church organization will remain exactly the same, however, as it is now except that he will give up charge of a parish while engaged in lecturing. "I am Impelled to this decision," said Dr. . Cathell when ne confirmed the news that he would cease to be rector of St. Paul's and undertake lecturing next year, "by reasons which will be apparent an opportunity to work in a wider field, and financial advantage. The matter has been under considera
tion for a long time. I first apprised my vestry of the consideration I was giving the matter. Immediately after Easter and last summer 1 spent some
time In the work as an experiment. In
a way. of course, it means an experi
ment, but my plans contemplate per
manent engagement In the new field. Specific information concerning the
contract between Dr. Cathell and the
Midland bureau were not disclosed, but it Is known that the bureau has been importuned by other bureaus to give them a part of his time and that already he has been put in the class of sneakers who receive in excess of $100
an engagement, with the prospect of at
least 200 lectures for next season.
After Twelve Years. Dr. Cathell, when he closes his ministry in Des Moines next April, will have been engaged in that work In this
city for more than twelve years, longer
by a half than any other rector of St. Paul's In whose pulpit he succeeded Dr.
Wilkins. On Oct. 12 of this year he
will have been thirty-seven years continuously in the ministry, not having been without a charge during all of the time since he was ordained on that date In 1870 at Williamsport, Pa., by Bishop Stevens. He became assistant to Rev. Dr. Richard Newton of Philadelphia upon his ordination, succeeding that eminent clergyman's son, Heber Newton, and being succeeded in turn by his second son, William Wilberforce Newton. He then became rector of a charge at Beverly, N. J., and then at Baltimore and went then to Central New York, where he remained fourteen years. After

some years at Richmond, Ind., where Mrs. Qathell's people reside, he came to St. Paul's nearly twelve years ago. This long service in the church, coupled with his great ability, force and the qualities of heart which make for personal popularity, has made him conspicuous in the organization. He has been five times a delegate to the general convention of the church, and twice has been nominated for the bishopric, an honor which is bestowed only on those clergymen who are leaders. Plans for the Winter. Dr. Cathell will leave late in the month for the general triennial convention of the Protestant Episcopal church of the United States at Richmond, Va., which convenes Oct. 2, and which will be held in connection with the triennial, or 300th anniversary of the first service held by the Englishmen in Jamestown. During the winter Dr. Cathell hopes to have a mission conducted at St. Paul's by the bishop of Colorado and his ministry will then culminate in the work of Lent and Easter. Lectures in Demand. His retirement from the work of rector of the parish in Des Moines does not mean however, his retirement from the ministry. His work in the lecture field will afford a supplement to his work in the church. While he is engaged in making new lectures he has selected the following subjects for the first four that he will undertake in the field next year: "Reminiscences of the Civil War and Its Personnel." "Jews and Jewels." "Some Pleasantries of a Serious Calling." "The Meaning of Education." Experts among those engaged in the lecture field pronounced Dr. Cathell's voice cne of the best for lecturing that has been heard in the United States in many years and his manner is in perfect harmony therewith. His ability long has been recognized. Dedicated to the Ministry. He is a graduate of Georgetown college, from whose halls he departed when 18 years of age. He was born at
Georgetown, March 5, 1849, and was dedicated from his birth, by his de(vout, Christian parents, to the minis
try. He was fifth among nine cmiaren and the war made it necessary for the Protestant parents of the community to send their children to the Catholic institutions which were kept open during that trying time on account of the community life of the teachers. With the other Protestant children of the city, Dr. Cathell found his way into these schools. His father was a devout Methodist and felt some disappointment when his son entered the Episcopal church, but years ago became reconciled and satisfied. He is living, now, and will be 90 years of age next Tuesday. A keen and critical estimate of Dr. Cathell has been written by Secretary Leslie M. Shaw, who said he had known him several years and believed that "he can conduct the Episcopal service with greater grace, more unction, and in every way more satisfac
torily than any other men living. He is a good thinker and his mind runs true, there is no yellow in his makeup and no guile in his bosom and in addition he is a most interesting speaker and an effective orator" in the better sense of the term."
