Muncie, Ind., Sept. 21 Certain creditors of the late Michael Loewenstein, the clothing merchant who died here of poisoning self-administered soon after a mysterious explosion and fire In his store had caused Its total destruction, desire to hold up the court's approval of the final report of Administrator John D. Marshall, of Richmond, pending an investigation of certain items of expense in the way of preferred claims, mentioned in this report. As it stands now, common creditors will receive only about seven and onethird per cent of their claims, but it is hoped by some of them, for whom Attorney William V. Mann, of Muncie, la a representative, to decrease materially the size of certain preferred claims, or, at any rate, to have a better explanation of them.
Roughly, the items credited to "fu-. neral expense" foot up about $900 and some of these are not understood, especially one for $300 credited to Atfolph Loewenstein. The administrator also puts in a claim for about $125 because of expenses Incurred by him on three trips to Chicago. A Chi cago undertaker has a claim for more than $200, notwithstanding a Muncie undertaker cared for the body of the merchant until it was shipped to Chi cago for Interment, and charged a mod est fee for his services. Administrator Marshall allows himself a fee of $600 and awards his attorneys $800. It will be remembered that after the explosion and fire in the Loewenstein store, the explosion apparently having been caused by burglars blowing the safe, the fire insurance companies re fused to pay the face values of the policies carried on the clothing stock A few days later and while negotla lions with the Insurance companies were on, Loewenstein died of morphine poisoning. It was strongly denied lhat he had committed suicide and it was shown that he was accustomed to nse-morphine to relieve headache and that he probably had taken too much A compromise with the insurance companies eventually was reached un fler which they paid 50 per cent of the policies. It was at first hoped that the Creditors claims, amounting to sever al thousand dollars, would be paid al most In full. A short time ago, how ever, a brother of Loewenstein put in a clim for about $4,000 and this, with the other preferred claims, almost wiped out the insurance money. Administrator Marshall's report has been completed and Is only await tag the court's approval for the funds to be distributed. PREDICT THAT TURKEYS WILL BE VERY SCARCE Thanksgiving Dinners Without Them Possible. PRICES WILL RANGE HIGH. A Thanksgiving without a turkey is almost as unthought of by the ordinary mind as Plymouth Rock without the Pilgrims. Yet this will undoubtedly be the case, at the coming Thanksgiving time, according to the statements of local poultry dealers and farmers who have each year until this, raised a g odly number of turkeys for the local consumers. They say that the cold, wet and decidedly late spring u-ade great inroads on the country sup ply in Wayne county, and about onethird the number of fowls that were furnished last year can be produced this year. The Thanksgiving prices on turkeys will be high, corresponding to prices paid last year. ST. FRIENDS' CONFERENCE HAS SELECTED WINONA Biennial Meeting yvill Be Held There Next Year.
INTERESTS LOCAL FRIENDS At a recent meeting of the Central Committee of Friends' General conference held at Fishertown, Pa., the decision was made to hold the next bl-en-nial conference at Winona Lake, Ind., from August 7 to Sept. 3, 1008. It is proposed to hold morning and even ing sessions, the afternoons to be devoted to committee meetings and recreation. This conference is composed of the seven yearly meetings of the socalled Hicksite branch of the Friends, and since its meeting here in 1S0S. it has met at Chautauqua, N. Y., Asbury Park, N. J., Toronto, Canada and Mountain Lake Park, Md. It is usually attended by about 2,000 people. 'A cordial invitation will be sent to all bodies of Friends in America and to London and Dublin yearly meetings, inviting their members to attend the conference at Winona. Partial arrangements have already been made for the program. A few Friend3 of North A street meeting have been ap pointed on the various committees and more will be engaged -n the work of preparation during the spring and summer. The Young Friends' association round table will devote its reg ular meeting tomorrow at t:30 in the basement of the meeting house to the uiscussion of the purposes and work accomplished by the general conference. Everyone interested will be cor dially welcomed. The eels form tlac suborder of the apoda. or footless fish, so called from the absence of ventral fins. These fish assume a form verv similar to the spp pents. Although on a hastr examination they seem to bo devoid of scales, vet when tho skin is dried very minute scaies may be seen through the semitransparent oter skin and may be easily detached by carefully separating the two skins. Eels inhabit muddy ponds and rivers and are common in many canals. They are susceptible to cold and constantly descend the rivers lo deposit their spawn In the sea, after which the young when hatched work their way up the rivers, thereby precisely reversing the habits of the salmon. They are capable of living out of water for a long time and often make voluntary land excursions, either for the purpose of avoiding an Insurmountable tail or in search of frogs or worms, on which they feed. In the winter, w hile they are lying torpid ia the mad, multitudes are taken by eel spears many pronced instruments, whose proses are feathered with recurved barbs, which, when pushed into the mud, entangle the eels and effectually . The first week of the work at Gar field ha3 moved off nicely. There are about forty more pup!ls enrolled than at the opening of the school a year ago, and as a result some of the class es are quite large. The irregular pu pils have had their programs arranged and but little confusion has arisen from this source. Thirty Learn Printing. Thirty of the boys are availing themselves of the opportunity to get a working knowledge of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc., by enrolling for work in printing. As soon as tlie manual training department can get out several new racks it will be more convenient for the boys to work. In the handling of the type, the boys must give far more careful attention to correct forms than in the other forms of language work in the school. It is only this phase that entitles the work to a place on the program. Prompt at Sports. The Garfield pupils have been f5 prompt to enter the sjiorts of the playground as to begin again with their books. On Monday evening and each evening since the tenuis courts, croquets grounds and the ball diamond have been in use. The play ground is in charge of a Garfield teacher each evening and on Saturday so that all who desire exercise in the open air, can engage in the various sports under proper supervision. More than a nunarea pupus nave paia meir auiletic dues and the Income from renting school athletic property during the summer was over thirty dollars. This places the athletic treasury in a good condition at the opening of the year. Gymnastic classes will not be organized until cold weather comes, but an unusually large number have enrolled for this work. Basket ball and polo teams will also be formed later. Vacancy is Filled. The resignation of Air. Brunson left the office of school treasurer vacant and at a called meeting of the old school council, Mr. Wissler was elected to the place. Election of Council. The election of a new school coun cil will take place next week. Great Interest Is taken in taese elections as the pupils feel the importance of the work of the council in the school. The work of the organized school gives training in citizenship and is a valuable means of allaying or rather pre venting any friction between the teachers and pupils. Matters of general interest are considered by the council where there is a free discussion both from the view point of the teacher and pupil. Getting in Touch. W. C. Conrad, who succeeded Mr. Brunson on the corps of teachers, is getting in touch with the work of the school and showing himself to be a teacher of ability and experience. Li' UK A KING. It's ot a DICiccli Matter In a Modern New'Tork Hotel. No crowned head ever pillowed i&slf for a night's lodging with the satisfaction of knowing that under the same roof there were a thousand perr-ons paid to look after its safety, comfort and luxury, unless that crowned head found itself in a modern New York hotel, where a regiment of "help" is employed, consisting cf clerks, chefs, pastry cooks, meat cooks, bakery men, soup cooks, detectives, watchmen, engineers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, laundrymen, doormen, porters, butlers, waiters, stewards, wine and cigar experts, decorators, messengers, waiting maids aud chambermaids. Any person with $4 in his pockets can have the advantages of this regimental array of servants for one day by paying the price of a room at any of the greater hotels recently constructed in the metropolis, though, of course, $4 ia the lowest figure. Many of the rooms cost double that sum a day, and some of the state apartments, with bedrooms, gorgeous parlor, private dining room and bath, are not let for less than $100 or $125 a day. Even the four dollar rooms hare baths, but the price of room or apartment does not include meals. Remsen Crawford in Success. "Book ol Mormon."
