Struggle at Chickamauga Was

MANY A MAN IN WAYNE COUNTY TOOK PART IN THE CONFLICT THOUSANDS WENT TO THEIR LAST REST.

Forty-four years ago Thursday, Sept. 19, more than one hundred thousand men. ranged on either side of a little valley some twenty miles south of Chlckamaugua, began a two .days' battle, which will be remembered as long as the history of the United States is read. The confederate forces surpassed the numbers of the federal troops, but the conflict was one of the most Btriking exhibitions of courage and zeal to be found in the annals of the Amer

ican civil war. With Bragg in command of the federal forces and Rosencrans commanding the northern troops, the generalship was, perhaps, as evenly matched as the fighting forces. The conflict raged for two days and the intervening night, and on the afternoon of the second day the arrival of additional forces to the confederate lines swung the balance of chance and the shattered ranks of heroes .from the north began their slow retreat to Chlckamaugua. It was there that Thomas, afterward commander of the army of the Cumberland, won his brightest laurels. It was there that Sheridan's bravery drew the attention of half the army and it was there that over twenty thousand men were slain. Many a man in Wayne county took a part in the conflict and hardly a single one of them fails to remember some comrade who joined the first charge on that sunny morning of September lf)th, and was seen no more.

STORM FLATTENED CORN. Heavy Damage Done in Farming District Near Hagerstown. Hagerstown, Ind., Sept. 20. The heavy storm, with wind and lightning which passed over Walnut Level, an extensive farming section southeast of here, did considerable damage. In the vicinity of Jacksonburg damage was done to standing corn, much of the heavy growth being flattened to the ground. The principal loss from this damage to the corn will be in the Inconvenience offered to sowing wheat in the corn rows. It will require the services of two or more men to each drilling machine to straighten the corn stalks so that the drill can pass through.

NEW CASTLE, IND. New Castle, Ind., Sept. 20 Judge W. O. Barnard was at Cambridge City Thursday attending the home-coming. James Baker, extra agent of the Richmond division of the Pennsylvania, is in the city for a few days. Mrs. Florence Pickett and son have returned from a visit at Cambridge City and East Germantown. Roy and Misses Margaret and Eva Jones spent Wednesday with Dr. and Mrs. J. R. Mauk at Cambridge City.

According to an opinion rendered yesterday to Dr. J. N. Ilurty, secretary of the state board of health, by Attorney General James Bingham, it is illegal for city health officers, In Indiana to, hold another lucrative position under which they would be charged with certain duties through the statutes of the state. The question went before the attorney general by reason of the fact that Dr. C. B. Collins, health officer at Clay City, Is a member of the City school board also, atid because the same situation existed at Kirklin, where Dr. A. P.. Parker, city health officer, was a member of the city school board. Several other health officials are believed to be holding lucrative municipal positions in various

parts of the state and Dr. Hurty and the state board intends to see to it that they give up one position or the

other.

CANNING FACTORIES START.

Those in Henry County Are Delayed Some Weeks. New Castle, Ind., Sept. 20 Canning factories In this county began operations Thursday. It Is the latest ever started, the crop being four to six weeks late. The season usually opens in this county the first of August. As a result of the late crop the output will be below the average about half and frost is expected to catch the vines heavily loaded with green fruit.

Saturday afternoon the first of the post season games between the Richmond all star team and the celebrated Dunkirk team will be played. The game will be called promptly at 3:30 o'clock. Sunday afternoon the same teams will play and it i3 expected that one of the largest crowds of the season will be in attendance at Athletic park. The local share of the receipts for both games will be divided equally among the players. The two teams will lineup as follows:

league next season will comprise larger cities: : The following cities will probably get franchises In the new I. O. league: Richmond, Muncie, Kokomo, Marion, in Indiana; Lima, "Van Wert, Piqua and Hamilton, in Ohio. This would make a splendid circuit of good baseball towns. There is a wide difference of opinion on the proper player to cover second base in an all-star team made up of Indiana-Ohio league players. Parker, of Portland, Hare, of Kokomo, and Eehringer, of Decatur,, have many admirers. Individually, Hare is by odds the best of the many player3 who have covered that sack during the season just closed. He has the weakness of playing a short field, but is very fast and if the team of stars was to be made up of the men with the best individual records it would have Hare at second. As a ground coverer Minzler

is the best in the league and for this reason, although he has a weakness in receiving the ball at the bag and is not counted strong with the stick, he is looked upon as just right for a stonewall infield, which depends largely upon the outer gardeners to do the heavy stick work. Columbus, O.. Sept. 20. The -world's record for three-year-old trotting colts was established In the Kentucky Stock Farm stake Thursday by the black colt Kentucky Todd, owned by Miss K. L. Wilks of Gait, Ontario, and driven by Harry Stinson. Kentucky Todd set the record at 2: 1)0 when he won the Western Horseman stake at Indinapolis last week and Thursday he met General Watts, the previous record holder, and gave him a decisive beating. Todd was favored in the pools. General Watts led the going, with Bell Bird second. Bell Bird made a break, but quickly recovered. Bonnie Way moved up to second place through the back stretch. Stinson was riding easy with Kentucky Todd at the half, which was reacher in l:02i, a terrific clip for the baby trotters. Around the turn Kentucky Todd commenced to step and at the threequarter pole his nose showed in front. Through the stretch the black colt breezed in grand style and won pulled

ord for 3-year-olds of any sex, held by Fantasy. The second heat was very easy for Kentucky Todd, Blue Hill being the only one to give him an argument, and the black colt drew away easily when Stinson called on him in the stretch. Good judges were unanimously of the opinion that the colt could have trotted close to 2:07 had he been driven out in the first heat.

Members Were Chased Out of Town by Irate Farmers And Various Others.

GRIMES AND STOUT CAME IN ALL RIGHT BUT THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE OTHERS REMAINS UNKNOWN.

Logansport, Ind., Sept. 20. Ralph Grimes and "Si" Stout, pitchers for the Kokomo team of the Indiana-Ohio league, arrived in this city from Flora, where the team played, after a mob of about 100 angry farmers, some carrying shotguns, had chased the members of the team from the town in all directions. Grimes got here only after running about two miles and then hiring a farmer to take him to the traction station in a rig; while Stout caught a Vandalia freight to this city, getting on the train after running half a mile with a mob after him. Neither of the

men know what become of the other members of the team, among which was Eddie Wise of this city. According to Grimes, Monday night while in a saloon Stout got in a trivial quarrel with the bartender. The matter, he said, did not amount to much and the players thought nothing about it. Tuesday the Kokcmo team won from Flora and at night after supper while the players were walking up the street they were met by a number of farmers, who said the players would have to go to the saloon and apologize to the bartender. All of the gang consented, and started toward the place in a jovial mood. Orr was in the lead nd followed byGrimes. Just as the door of the saloon was opened the bartender stepped up with a shot gun. Immediately there was a scatterment In all directions. The plaj-ers were followed by a yelling mob while a fusillade of stones and tin cans came in their wake. Many of the bunch. Grimes claimed, carried shot guns while they were nearly all drunk.
