PRICE FOR PEJUS WILL BE SKY HIGH
This News Will Be Disappointing to Many People of The Quaker City. A STATEMENT BY HALL MANY PEACH ORCHARDS ARE RUINED AND IT WILL BE SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE THEY ARE REPLACED. News from the. Michigan peach belt Is anything but reassuring to the Richmond people who have been hoping the yield would be so plentiful that Jt would be possible to secure a liberal supply to can. Samel Hall, one of the expert fruit growers of Michigan, gives out thla statement regarding the crop: "As In other fruit, the extreme shortage In peaches has driven the market prices high. What few Berrien county (Michigan) farmers are fortunate enought to have even one-fourth of the average crop are selling at values never equaled. "Prices range from $1 to $!.. a bushel higher than last year. , Com mission men say this condition will continue. Prices to the retailer range from $2.r0 to $3 a bushel for the best grades of yellow peaches, and from $2 to $2 per bushel for the white varl ety. Baskets sell wholesale at SO to 40 cents and there is little choice fruit in the market even at that price. Not all orchards in the Michigan fruit belt are barren, however, as Hartford is producing generous yields. Canning factories are quiet this fall. It is estimated that less than il per cent of the usual amount of peaches will be canned this year. The F. W. Traxler canning factory at Hartford is one of the few In the peach belt now operating. Forced Back to Chicago. "Van Buren has a stretch of land between South Haven and Covert, a etretch of ten miles or so, that bears the name of the 'plaugue spot.' Every other house Is deserted, the occupants who came from Chicago, having been forced to abandon their farms and get back to the city to avoid starvation. Most of these farms are merely small patches of fruit land, five to ten acres In extent, the owners depending entirely on the fruit crop. Many of the peach orchards are ruined. It will be several years before another crop can be hoped for from young orchards. In hundreds of cases, owners of old orchars have not set out new ones, and prospects for the fruit belt are consequently very bad." He Are yon jrood at conundrums? Plie Yes. This comedy will be presented at the Amusements Vaudeville at the Phillips. Williams and Healy, singers, talkers, dancers, acrobats and contortionists, at the New Phillips this week In vaudeville, while not touted as headllners, make one of the biggest hits and the contortion and acrobatic work is especially well received. The audience made a long-continued effort to recall this team, but was unsuccessful. Ernie and Henneger, acrobats and dancers, made another big hit. These two clever young men have but one leg each, and the remarkable part of it Is that the left leg of one and the right leg of the other Is gone, but the way they get about, either on one leg or with the aid of a crutch, which they do not seem to need, is truly remark able. The Valadons, aerial cyclists and jugglers, introducing Miss Lora Valdon, the Brobst trio, expert dancers on roller skates; the illustrated song and the motion pictures, which are this week especially pleasing, complete a bill that any one who cares for refin ed vaudeville will be well repaid to see. "Are You a Mason?" Gsnnett. The authors of "Are You a Mason?" wrote Francis Wilson's great comedy success of last season, "The Mountain Climber." Like most of the funniest comedies ever produced In this coun try, it originated in Germany. It was from that country that the late Augustin Daly derived his biggest comedy success and William Gillette had the same experience. "Are You a Mason" has been booked to appear at the Gennett next Friday night. bncliejr as a Boy. ITere is a glimpse of Shelley offered by Andrew Lang: "It seems almost Incredible, but it is true, that I once knew a man who was at Eton vrlth Shelley, who left In 1810. This was Mr. Hammond, a senior fellow of Morton college when I was an Inquiring Jnnlor. About 1ST0 he told me all that I could extract from him about the poet. 'Shelley was not a clever boy; hs? neTer was sent up for good which means, I conceive, that he never did a remarkable exercise in. Latin verse. Mr. Hammond added that Shelley had a habit when he was walking alone of suddenly breaking Into a sprint at a hundred yards pace. That was all." Sho Didn't Do It. The family jar waxed fiercer. "You talk about my being to blame for our marrying:" shrilly exclaimed Mrs. Vlck-Senn. "John Henry, did 1 hunt you out and make love to you?" "Nor he snorted. "But you could have given me the glassy eye and sent me about my business, and you didn't do it, madam you didn't do itl" Chicago Tribune. The Gentleman. "Supposing I decide to let yon bav the money, how do I know that I shali get it back at the time you mention?" asked Brown. "I promise it, myboy. on the won: of a gentleman," replied Moore. "Ah! In that case I may think better of It. Come around this evening and bring him with you." None Left. "A college education." declared the enthusiastic mother, "brings out all that Is good In a boy." "Yes." retorted William's fattier, "and in Bill's case I wish a little of It could have stayed la." Cleveland Pres.
