MESSAGES MAY BE SENT FOR ONE CENT PER WORD PLAN FOR THE ENTERPRISE IS MADE PUBLIC. Chicago, Sept. 7. The American Union Telegraph company, which promises to become a strong competitor of the Western Union and Postal Telegraph companie3 in the telegraph business, will open an office in Chicago in two . weeks, according to "L. E. Davis, ! president of the Rock Island Construc tion company. The capital stock rf the new company will be $3,000,000. It will be incorporated under the laws of New Jersey or Maine, but the headquarters will be in Chicago. "Wealthy capitalists of St. Louis, New York and Chicago, are interested In the new company," said Mr. Davi3 today. "I cannot give you their names now, but in a few days I will be able to do so. "J. P. Hornday, 20 William street, New York, is looking after the interests of the new company in that city. We have secured options on the wires of four telephone companies and 100,oo miles of telephone wires are available for use now in the East, West and a large portion of the South. To Utilize Telephone Wires. "We propose to construct, equip and operate standard telegraph lines throughout the United States, also to lease and otherwise acquire local and through telephone wires and use them for the transmission of ouo telegraphic business and will construct new lines along the public highways and over the rights-of-way of local and through elec tric railway lines. By the use of our proposed new in struments we will be able to transmit telegraph messages over local and through telephone .wires without interrupting or anyway interfering with the telephone service, thereby greatly increasing the earning capacity of the local and general telephone companies and reducing the cost of operating and filiate with any other telegraph company. We expect to greatly reduce the cost of telegraphing and our experts have convinced us that we can reduce the cost from 2."c for ten words to local points, as charged by other companies, to 1 cent per word for messages of ten words, not counting signature or address." Latest picture of Mrs. William E. Corey, former Mabelle Gillman, wife of the steel trust President, who in a recent interview said: "I do not care for social butterfly life. My music and AN UNOPENED PADLOCK. Vienna's Strange Relic That Defied the World's Locksmiths. In 1S10 a blacksmith went to Vienna and locked an Iron band around a tree with a padlock. "What he did with the key no one knows to tni9 day. There Is a mirthful legend to the effect that he carelessly threw it into the air and that it never came down again. At any rate, the key could not be found, and the Austrian government offered a prize of 500 ducats to any one who could make a key that would turn the bolt in the lock without breaking it. Many have tried to win the prize, but nobody has won it. Eventually it became the practice among the contestants to drive a nail in the tree and the heads of some of the nails bear the initials of those who drove them. The practice of driving nails into tbe tree sealed its fate. The lower part of the tree in a few years assumed the appearance of a solid mass of iron. One spring the leaves failed to conve out, and later a summer storm blew the top away. The historic stump was cut off and placed on a pedestal on one of the prominent street corners in Vienna. At the same time the iron band was cut in two and put around the stump to hold it in its niche, leaving the padlock in its original position. And there the old stump stands to this day an object both of the curiosity of tourists and the veneration of the resi dents of Vienna. Incidentally, a street, Stock im Eisen "Stick in Iron" has been named after the stump. Scrap Book. ANTIQUITY OF GEOMETRY. The Science May Have Existed In India Fcr Long Ages. Did we learn our rule of three and our Euclid from India? Researches have brought to light astronomical ta bles in India which must have been constructed by the principles of geometry. Some are of the opinion that they have been framed from observations made not less than 3,000 years before the Christian era, and if this opinion be well founded the science of geom etry must have been cultivated in In dia to a considerable extent long be fore the period assigned to its origin in the west, so that many of. the elemen tary propositions . may have been brought from India to Greece. The Indians have a treatise called the "Surya Sidhanta," which professes to be a revelation from heaven communicated to Meya, a man of great sanctity, about 4,000,000 years ago. This book contains a rational system of trigonometry which differs entirely from the first known in Greece and Arabia. In fact, it is founded on a geometrical theorem which was not known to the geometricians of " Europe before the time of Victa, about 200 years ago. And it employs methods of demonstration unknown to the Greeks, who used others. The former have been attributed to the Arabs, but It is possible they have received this improvement in trigonometry as well as the numerical characters from India. Chicago Tribune. "CAMBRIDGE CITY. Cambridge City, Ind., Sept. 9 The Little Giants met with their first defeat in the last ten games played at Connersville, Sunday. The Ramblers won by a score of 9' to 2. The Difference Eetwecn the Sexes In This Important State. One source of women's happiness is to be found, we think, in their love of detail. They enjoy every detail of social life. They love the minutiae of their work. They do not love it as aman loves his, for the sake of an end They look close at what they are oing, and they do not look forward They take pleasure in their children as they are. A defect, even though it be a serious one, destroys their pteasnre in them far less than it destroys that of a man. They are not constant ly oppressed by the thought of what that defe-..t will mean in the future. If a woman is by nature apprehensiviy uer fears apply Tor the most part to little things. If a man is apprehensive he fears when the fit is upon him the debacle of heaven and earth. For women time goe3 a little sl3wer. They take pleasure in each jewel of that mosaic which makes up happiness and are not fretted because the pattern is not complete. Of this quality they ave, no doubt, the Inevitable defectsmuch brilliance, little grasp and a tendency to frivolity. They are apt to .fritter away their lives and minds on little thinjfs. They become engrossed with the details of play as well as the details of work. Men no doubt have more opportunities of keen pleasure than women have, but these opportunities are short lived. The happiness of the moment they are less fitted to take. The difference between the sexes in this particular might, we believe, be thus summed up: A man is happy whenever he has anything to make him happy, but a woman is happy when ever sue hits nothing to make her unhappy. Because of pressure of business pertaining to other matters pending before the Indiana Railroad commission, the hearing wnich was to have been given the express companies doing business in Indiana. Sept. 12, relative to alleged discriminations with which they are charged, and regarding their rates and practices, has U?en continued by the commission until Sept. IS. The commission recently sent out a number of interrogatories for information, which the companies are expected to furnish on the day of the hearing. The Indications are that the companies will resist the efforts of the commission to
