DULY ONE BIG FLEET ROOSEVELT'S PLAN To Be Increased in Strength From Eighteen to Twenty-eight Battleships.
READY FOR SHORT NOTICE. WILL RETURN TO ATLANTIC SEABOARD AFTER THE CRUISE, HAS SHOWN FEASIBILITY OF MOVING SUCH VAST NAVAL FORCE. Washington, Sept. C It i3 authoritatively stated at the navy department that President Roosevelt does not contemplate the creation of two battleship Ileets. 2s or does Secretary Metcalf nor even the general board, which Is supposed to represent the extreme view in naval development, favor either the division ef the present magnificent fleet under Admiral Evans' command or the creation of another fleet in order that there may be a formidable American navy in both oceans, the Atlantic and the Pacific. The Better Policy. On the contrary, it is regarded at the navy department as a better policy to maintain one perfectly equipped and well-drilled fleet, free to move speedily to any part of the globe at short notice and the present plans contemplate the Increase of the strength of the Atlantic from eighteen to twenty-eight battleships. This will afford a command as large as can be properly directed by one officer and it will moreover, about mark the capacity of the ports and drydocks of any section or the world. So It Is asserted posl tlvely at the department that there is not the least Intention of keeping the battleships which will go to the Pa cific permanently in those waters. The fleet, it is added, will surely return to the Atlantic seabord after it has per formed its mission and demonstrated the feasibility of moving such a vast naval force between the two oceans. Carl W. Cook, of the Ccok Stock Company at the Gennett Next Week.
Amusements Carl W. Cook Stock Co. The following is, taken from the Kal amazoo Gazette relating to the Carl W. Cook Stock company, which will open a week's engagement at the Gennett next Monday night in "Jim, the Westerner": Carl W. Cook and his popular stock company gave a second performance of "The Heart of Tennessee," at the Grand ast night, to a well filled house. That before the engagement is over they wiirle considered the most popular company playing here, is even at this time an assured fact. The company itself Is one of the moat evenly balanced seen here In some time. An entire change of specialties is being made with each bill, which certainly shows the versatility of the specialty people with the company. As each number is new, novel and up-to-date. Popular prices will prevail and ladies will be admitted free Monday night under usual conditions. Orpheum Stock Company. "Broken Hearts" will be the offering of the Orpheum Stock company at the Gennett tonight, and the engagement will be concluded with productions of "Faust" Saturday afternoon and "The Blackiiawk Mine" Sat urday night. Vaudeville at the Phillips. For the vaudeville program at the New Phillips next week Manager Murray has secured an act that it Is believed will be particularly attractive. This is Russell J. Grose, the handcuff monarch, who Is advertised to remove any shackles, private or foreign combination, or timelock, handcuffs included. This, it is claimed. Is the highest priced single act in vaudeville. The remander of the bill for next week will be announced later. There will be a special matinee for children on Saturday. Oh, Yes, of Course. Of the many children and women In Nazareth, Palestine, who have picked up a little English all have a way of saying "of course" Instead of a simple yes." The expression which Frencb people catch up as characteristic of the American and Englishman is always "Oh, yes!" A correspondent, who has cycled down the Rhone valley, about Provence and along the Riviera, found himself greeted with "Oh. yes!" by the children In the streets of nearly every town. And he discovered when his attention bad been called to the point in this way that "Oh, yes!" wa? really what he and his companion Were always saying. His Business. The lady in black pointed toward th sky. "My husband," she sighed, "Is up there, but he is looking down. Perhaps he sees all that we do." "How long has he been dead, ma'am?" we inquired gently. With a frown, she answered: "Dead? lie isn't dead. He's aeronaut." Exchange. an She Helped. Rayner It took nerve, didn't it, to break yourself of the habit of smoking at your age? Shyne-It did, you bet! But my wife er has plenty of that. Chicngo Tribune. Love. SMIcns How can a man tell whet he Is really in love? Cynicti! He can't tell till it's too late. Philadelphia Record.
