TIMELY DISCOVERY PREVENTED A FIRE Don Wright Noticed Odor of Burning Gas and Investigation Followed.
WAS DUE TO FEED WIRE.
GAS PIPE HAD BURST AND THE GAS BURNED ALL DAY WITHOUT BEING DISCOVERED RECALLS BAD FIRE.
City Marshal Causes Row at Greencastlc
Cambridge City, Ind.f Aug. 2. The timely discovery of a leaking gas pipe by Don Wright, In the cellar of E. D. Filby's wholesale cigar house, late Monday evening, prevented a disastrous fire. The leak is supposed to .have been caused by the current from the feed wire of the interurban company, which fell to the sidewalk In front of Filby's establishment that morning and in falling came into contact with an iron water box. making connection with the pipe. The heavy current had burst the pipe and ignited the escaping gas at the same time, allowing it to burn all day before it was discovered. Tbe floor and surrounding timbers had become intensely hot, and when discovered were at a point of bursting into flame. The odor of burning gas was detected by young "Wright as he entered the undertaking
parlors of his father, which adjoins,
the cigar store, and a plumber was called to shut off the supply pipe as Boon as the cause was determined. The building is owned by C. T. Wripht and was erected after a destructive firC in which property valued at :7.km was lost. The fire occurred February 4, llxtl!, and Is remembered as on of the worst In the history of th'e town, being almost a total loss.

"The Hoosier Girl" Gennett.
A company of American artists head
ed by Miss Kate Watson, and Gus Cohan, presenting a comedy of American
authorship, will be at the Gennett, Sat
urday matinee and night. The play re-
feVred to is James H. Martin's brilliant
three-act pastoral comedy "The Hoos
ier Girl" and its presentation in this
section has so far proven a duplicate
of its success elsewhere. This piece held the boards of the leading city
theatres two seasons, to capacity business, and this fact alone would seem
to be unanswerable argument of suc
cess. Miss Kate Watson, the charming comedienne, who is being featured in the title role, is too well known as an artiste of exceptional ability to need any comment to the amusement loving public of the city. Vaudeville at the Phillips. Next Monday afternoon vaudeville will be resumed at the New Phillips and will run through the fall and winter season without a break.
