The game Friday afternoon was postponed on account of rain and the mush-like condition of the grounds. Both teams will engage in a doubleheader, tho Weather Man permitting. and the fans -will eet a chance to seei two hard fights for one price of ad- j
mission. This is an inducement to ' those four flushers who take advantage of the law on Sundays and walk through the gates at Athletic park without contributing a cent at the bot office. For some strange reason theso Sunday 'charity patrons are neariy all knockers.
In case the grounds are not in con-, dition to play on this afternoon th& double-header probably will be pull-i ed off Sunday afternoon and the third game of the series will be played Monday, which is an open date on the schedule. Decatur has an exhibition game booked at some water tank for Monday but It will be canceled In the event a championship game Is scheduled for that date. VAN WERT 6; PORTLAND 3. Portland, Ind., Aug. 24. Portland lost the first of the Van Wert I. O. league series on the local grounds, the score being 6 to 3. The visitors yon by their superior stick work, pounding Wagner all over the lot. He was badly out of form and the visitors seemed to have no trouble whatever in solving his delivery at any necessary stage of the game. The visitors played a good, snappy game and deserved to win, playing a much headier game than did Richmond, now the league leaders, which Just finished a three-game series on the local ground. Betz, formerly of Portland, but now playing first base with Van Wert, In the fourth when two men were on bases, drove a long one to the adjoining cornfield and galloped around the bases. In a fast .and tight game of base ball at Athletic Park Bluffton won from Kokomo by a score of 3 to 2. The game was stubbornly contested to the end of the seventeenth inning. In the first inning Bluffton made a single score, which was not disputed successfully until the last half of the ninth inning, when Kokomo tied the score. It was in the last 'inning that the visiting team made two scores while Kokomo made one. Biltz. the Kokomo pitcher, distinguished himself by holding good to the end of the game. Wise, Ryan and Hare made sensational one-handed catches during the game, which proved one of the most interesting and exciting of any which has been played upon the Kokomo diamond this season. The umpire work of Gardner gave excellent satisfaction to both sides, doing away with the ugly feeling which has prevailed in the past. Score : R. H. B. BASEBALL GOSSIP. (By Tort.j T. Ritter Is on he hospital list. The Rabbit has an abscess on his right foot, due to wearing a new pair of baseball moccasins. Hunter will ramble about Pike's Peak until Ritter is able to get into the game again. Cole and Horn will probably be Manager Jessup's choices for box work in the double header, with Fleming or Hunter on the mound the third game. Grant in the City. Manager Grant. of the South Bend Central League team has his nose to the ground on a hot scent for recruits for next season. Last Tuesday the little veteran decided to take a much needed vacation so he jumped his outfit and went to Portland where he joined Manager Jessup and his band of Quaker braves. Wednesday and Thursday he watched Portland and Richmond, the two I. O. League leaders, fight it out. Friday he came to Richmond with the Quakers and when the Decatur game was called off he was the most disappointed man in town. Richmond made a big hit with Grant. He walked through Glen Miller which so impressed him that he remarked that the park was the most beautiful one he had ever seen. "This is certainly one swell town" said Grant after his "Seeing Richmond" excursion on foot. Grant states that he is combining a pleasure and scouting trip. He has seen several I. O. League players who look awfully good to him and they may be seen in the South Bend lineup next season. Grant is loud in his praises of Gig Gene Moore, the former Richmond twirler now with South Bend. "One of the best twirlers in the business and he is pitching great ball for us right now," said Grant. "He is ripe for the American Association and with another season in the minors he will be ready for the major leagues." Another From New Castle. Richmond has added another New Castle player to the payroll. We have decided that every time New Castle swipes one of our factories we will come back at the Flower City by pilfering one of her native sons of the diamond. The latest recruit is Third Baseman Carlin. late of the Shreveport, La., Southern League team. Carlin was bitten by either a rhinoceros or a spider we forget which while playing in Dixie and he had to return to the frost bitten north. Carlin, according to Weaver and Ritter, is a cracker jack, being fust as lightning and a splendid sticker. He will join the team Sunday. Manager Jessup has not yet stated where he will place him. The (liGiculty most people; experience In getting up in the morning can be eas'ly overcome by a simple operation, according tr a medical authority. After the niskfs lonj? rest the brain is laden with somewhat Impure blood, ami the lymph vessels which remove wast? matter are overfull and sluggish. Thi Is why v,-e all crave another ten mixi ute.s in bed nvd why most people are so morose at breakfast. Very slowlj the brain gets rid of the matters which interfere with its vigorous action, but the process can be expedited. If the finder tips are placed agalust the neck just under the ear and moved E-sviftly tlown to the front of the shoulder along the course of the jugular vein, the up b!ood is drawn away and room left for a fresh supply. This should be done twice at each side of the neck. Then the hands should bo placed on tlia brick of the neck just under the skull and moved downward as far as passible. This clears out the lymph vessels and effectually provents swollen glanda, from which so many people suffer. After two brisk rubs of the lymph vessels return to the Jugular veins and then back to the glands, half a dozen or eight times, until the operation wi!! be found far better than a cup of coffee, and whenever the brain Is dull through congestion this massage wiii be equally effective. Mi Mrs. and Mistress. "Miss" i3 an abbreviation of "mla tress," which, as an English law dictionary explains, is the proper style of the wifa of an esquire or a gentleman. By Dr. Johnson's time it had become "the term of honor to a young girl." In the earliest part of the eighteenth century, however, It was used respectfully of girls below the age of ten alone. After that age "miss" was rude, implying giddiness of behavior. In Smollett's writings an unmarried woman of mature years and her maid are both "Mrs." It is certain that "miss" has grown older, so to speak, while "master" has become confined to boys. Danger In Linolaum Making. In the manufacture of linoleum no unprotected lights are allowed in tho mixing department. This is on account of the great danger of exploding the cork dust floating in the air. An additional danger in linoleum making Is that the mixture of cement and cork dust has the unpleasant property of spontaneously igniting if left In a warm place. It Is therefore customary to mix the material a sackful at a time In order to reduce the risks of an explosion. A Figure cf Speech. "Dad," Inquired Freddy, "what Is a 'figure of speech? " "Where's your mother?" asked dad cautiously. "She's downstairs," answered the boy. "Well, then," began dad, "a figure of speech, my son. Is a woman." Harper's Weekly. A Paradox of Poets. "Foets have always had scanty encouragement." "Yes," answered the sad eyed youth with Inky ringers. "The idea seems to be that poetry is something everybody ought to read and nobody ought to write." THE SUGAR PLUM.
tt Is the Most Ancint Candy, Antedating tho Christian Era. The most r.nciest kind of candy is the sugar plum. It was the invention of Julius Drag-atus, a cot?d Roman baker and confectioner, who belonged to the family of Fafcius. According to the New YorL: Here Id, it was in 177 B. a ihat ho n!ade the great discovery which for twenty centuries has done so much lr.mago to teeth. These bonbons, called drngati, after their inventor (dragees in French), retrained the erclusivt? privilege of the family of Fabius. But at the birth or marriage of one of that family a great distribution of dragati took place as a sign of rejoicing. The custom is still observed by uiauy of the nobility of Europe. The pastille is of far later origin, having been Invented and introduced into France by an Italian confectioner, the Florentine, John Fastilla. a protege of the Medicis. When Maria de Medici married Henry IV; of France, Pastilla accompanied his sovereign to the French court, where his bonbons had a tremendous vogue. Everybody wanted the Florentine's pastilles, which ; were excellent. He made them with ' all kinds of flavors chocolate, coffee, j rose, violet, mint, wine, strawlterry. 1 raspberry, vanilla, heliotrope and car- ! nation. j Burned almonds are purely of French ; origin, owing their Inception to the gluti tony of a certain French merchant, j One day Marshal Duplessis-Pralin, an t old rnnreift. sent for Lassatrne. who had already invented many a toothsome dainty, to concoct a new bonbon for him. Lassague searched, reflected, combined,. until Anally he conceived a delicious bonbon, which he baptized gloriously with the name of his master, I'ralino, the French for burned almends. THE ROMAN ANGARIA. Ancient Postal System That Came Down From tho Persians. The carefully organized potal system of today is of course more complete than the angaria of the ancient Romans, yet their mail traveled with considerable speed. ' The system of angari, or couriers on horseback, was borrowed from the Persians, who, according to Zeuophon, had established it under Cyrus the Elder. The Roman adaptation of it was the best system of transmitting letters among the ancient states. All along the great Roman roads houses were erected at a distance of five or six miles from each other. At each of these stations forty horses were constantly kept, and by the help of relays it was easy to travel a hundred miles in a day. These services were intended for the state only, it being Imperative to secure the rapid Interchange of official communications. In the time of Julius Caesar the system was so well organized that of two letters the great soldier wrote from Britain to Cicero at Rome the one reached Its destination

ty-eight day. Private citizens had to trust to the service of slave, and it Is not until the end cf th? third century that we hear cf the establishment of a iMstal system for private persons by the Emperor Diocletian, but how long thi system remained history does not say. The supply of hor?e and their maintenance were concpubjory, and only th emperor could grant exemption from either. The word angaria therefore came to mean compulsory service in dispatching the royal mail. Scrap Book. Flam and Wiro Gaure. To Sir Humphry J"ary belongs the credit of discovering that the flame of burning gas will not pass through wire gauze having 7S4 methes to the square Inch. This contention may be tested by bringing a Came In contact with similar gaure, when It will be found that the flame will not go through the meshes. This is owing to the cooling action of the wire, which tends to reduce the temperature of the flame below the ignition point, the uaburnedgas passing harmlessly through. Of course if the gauze becomes overheated the flame is able to get through. Whisky Msdo of Old Barrels. "The man is a grogger," said the fool inspector. "He makes whisky out of old barrels.
