MAJORITY OF THE TOWNSHIPS DRY Figures Compiled by the Indiana Bureau of Statistics Given Out.

DECREASE IN THE SALOONS.

OWING TO THE ADVANCE IN THE COST OF LICENSES, THE REVENUE DERIVED WAS LARGER THAN FORMERLY.

More than two-thirds of the townships of the state have no saloons, according to figures compiled jointly by Miss Mary A. Stubbs, chief of the Indiana Bureau of Statistics and the Anti-Saloon League. Of the total of 1,061 townships, only 296 have saloons, according to the figures and 720 have none. The total number of saloons granted license during 1906 was 5,253, as opposed to 5,277 in 1905, showing a decrease of twenty-four. Three entire counties were "dry" in 1906, according - to Miss Stubbs Brown, Lagrange and Pike. While there was a decrease in the number of saloon licenses issued in 1906, the revenue derived from such licenses increased. This was due to the increasa in the cost of a city license. Each sa

loon pays a regular state license of

$100 and a city license in addition.

In some cities licenses were placed

at a higher figure In 1906. The

amount derived from the liquor licenses, city and state in 1906 was $1,415,986.50, as compared with $1,369,718 in 1905.

Peanut meal has been for a long time a staple article in the dietary of the poor classes In Spain. Bread made from pure peanut meal is light and porous, but it is said to be unpalatable because of a persistent poppy-like taste. Rye bread containing 23 per cent of peanut meal can not be distinguished from ordinary rye bread, while far more nutritious. Skim milk cheese is the onlj ordinary article of diet comparable to peanut meal in its percentage of nitrogenous matter.
