Past carnivals and amusement enterprises, which have showed in Richmond faded into insignificance when the three thousand Richmond people Monday night compared them with the great Parker shows at the Gilbert park this week. The opening night wa3 a rouser in every respect. The people went to Jiave a good time

standing the fact that conventionalities were cast to the forewinds, and every one joined to make the event B success, the crowd was orderly. The attractions are the finest for a

carnival ever shown in Richmond

To sny that one

ter than another, i; t:?-iir.3 on dangerous ground. They are all good and the verdict of tho thousands of 1-eople attending the shows confirms

tlie statement, that the carnival Is

one cf the best ever showing here. People welcomed the carnival for it is a carnival in the fullest sense of the "word and a record breaking business

Is expected this week, weather permit

ting. Promptly at seven o'clock Monday evening almost the entire membership of the local aerie of Eagles met at the lodge hall on Main street where they marched to Fourth and formed into line headed by the Great Parker concert band. Members of the Druids and Red Men lodges joined hands with the Eagles and hundreds marchrd in the parade to thte carnival grounds on East Main street. The parade was several squares in length. The steam calliope brought up the rear end of the procession and attracted hundreds of people, to Main

street. The carnival fever was catch-1

Ing and there was an air of expectancy hanging over hundreds of people in the uptown district. Hacks and street cars did a land

office business to the carnival grounds while hundreds of people who could catch neither hacks nor cars, walkpd. There they were greeted with dazzling electrical fronts and the incessant barks of the "Ballyhooers." 1A string of automobiles and carriages was lined up on then orth side of Main street in the vicinity of the prounds a square in either direction. The mass of humanity wedging itself to the ticket office and through the gates from seven-thirty to nine, was the greatest first night crowd the Parker people have had in several months. The show managers were liappy and so was the crowd which spent money freely. All attractions were well patronized until after eleven o'clock. The crowd lingered and lingered, enjoying itself to. the fullest extent. Attractions are Good. As for the attractions individually nnd collectively they are good, far beyond the hope of the most sanguine. The Great Parker animal show is particularly good. '"La Belle Salina," the wife of Capt. Dyer, the animal trainer, worked with "Prince," the ferocious African lion the first time since the beast made an attempt to end her life In Bradford, Pa., a few weeks ago. The beast was sullen and vicious but 'La Belle Salina" handled him In a cool and collected manner. She showed unusual bravery when she fed the Hon raw bloody meat both from her hands and mouth. After she had i

performed this feat, she calmly laid down her revolver and whip, her only

means of protection against the beast,

and faced the audience, which responded vociferously. The work of the courageous woman is truly remarkable. More than once as the animal made angry passes at her she faced him and cowed him by her coolness. Not a single act in the lengthy animal show program is faulty and it is well worth the price of admission. "The Four Flying Valentines" are particularly good aerial artists and give their act in connection with the "Sunflower Belles" attraction. The great beauty of the carnival is that it is up to date. All tents are fitted with electric fans and electric lights furnished by the company's own power plant. Opera chairs and circus seats are used entirely. In fact, everything is done for the comfort of the people attending the shows. The free attractions are all good; more than was expected, and as a result all were roundly applauded. The street car service to and from the carnival grounds was poor. Not one half of the crowd could be handled and hundreds of people were compelled to walk owing to the scarcity of cars. With the extraordinarily large crowds expected during the remainder

of the week the street car company with the equipment it used Monday night will be as a pygmy in the hands of a giant.

unions are given as the reasons why more jbuilding Is not being done In Richmond. It is asserted that the lumber prices are higher than they ever have been before; so high in fact that those people who contemplate placing their money In residences and other buildings hesitate before doing so. Common, rough lumber which was comparltively cheap a few .years ago is now sky high. The erection of a modern cottage or home today means an outlay of several hundred dollars more than It would a few years ago. Wages of brick layers, carpenters and painters is also a serious item of expense in the erection of a home and with the combined Increase In

expenses, the number of building permits Issued each month Is falling ofT. The month of August this year has been an unusually dull one.
