Concord, N. H., Aug. 16. Following the Interview with Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy the question of her mental condition was taken up before the board of masters. Dewitt C. Howe, counsel for the plaintiffs in the accounting suit brought against Mrs. Eddy, formally withdrew the term "general Insanity" as applied to the condition of the Christian Science leader. Judge Aldrich, for the masters, made the following ruling: "We are all of opinion that the evidence tending to show that Mrs. Eddy Is in a delusionary mental condition in re
spect to forces operating upon her
relatives and next friends and through
them upon her business, if of a c'aar
acter to show mental impairment and
to Influence her in business affairs Is admissible. This is limited to el leged delusions which reasonably con
nect themselves with respect to the
management of property affairs."
To this ruling both sides excepted
Competence to Direct is Question
Judge Aldrich, speaking for the masters, said that the question to be
determined is that of competence to
manage the property, not one of in
sanity, general delusion, or religious
delusion.
"We will show your honors." declar
ed Mr. Howe, "not monomania on
the part of Mrs. Eddy, but a condi
tion of insanity which confirms every
action of her life."
Judge Aldrich asked if the masters
had any more right to decide against
Christian Science as a religion than
against Catholicism or spiritualism.
"Christian Science is a system of
medicine (not a religion)" replied Mr.
Howe. "In so far as Christian
Science is speculation it cannot be called a delusion, but when it is based upon supposed facts which can be
proved not to be facts then it is a
delusion."
. Efficacy of Prayer Queried. Judge Aldrich asked how this mat
ter of delusion was connected with
business competency. He spoke of

NEW PLAN IS PRESENTED.
Rev. M. Hobson, pastor of the local
U. B. church, was named on the committee on candidates for ministry at
the annual conference now on at Anderson.
At the session Thursday, Bishop Mat

"The great indifference to the moral
standard of living is shown." said the
peaker, "by the home-wrecking crimes
that are increasing to such an alarming extent. These influences are the
enemies of the church and call for a
united effort in order that we may save our homes and the nation."
The report of the committee on
church erection was presented by M.
Hobson of Richmond and was discussed by the Rev. H. S. Gabel, general sec

Asserting that it appears that classified freight rates from Indianapolis to various points in the state are excessive, the Indiana Railroad commission has issued an order for a hearing on the freight rate question Oct. 12. In the meantime the commission will conduct a general inquiry Into the freight rate question. The whole subject of rates on classified freight will be gone into throughout the state, all railroads
being questioned.
The commission's order says that
freight rates in Indiana lack uniformity and work to the disadvantage of many localities. It Is this that the
commission hopes to remedy. The
railroads themselves admit that the
freight rates need revision and modi
fication. Many complaints have been filed with the commission protesting against alleged excessive rates and the commission has revised classified rates to and from individual points In many cases. One of these complaints is from Richmond.

Old Orchard, Me., Aug. 16 Half of Old Orchard's summer hotel and cot-

100 cottages were destroyed.
The fire was discovered in the up
per part of the Olympia hotel about 8 o'clock and is believed to have had its
origin in an oil lamp upset by a servant. Adjoining building containing
stores located along the board walk, beside the Boston and Maine tracks, soon caught fire and from these the
flames jumped the tracks and com
municated with the Alberta hotel and several other large buildings near the
shore. , Area of Fifty Acres Ablaze. The Boston and Maine railroad sta

On unimpeded.
An area of about fifty acres along
the beach was soon blazing. In this area were located some of the most popular of the hotels, all of which were filled to overflowing by summer
guests. One by one the Hotel Fiske, one of the finest on the beach, valued
at $50,000; the Hotel Emerson, valued at $75,000 with its furnishings; the
Hotel Alberta, the Aldine, the Law
rence house, and a half dozen smaller
hotels were caught and left in ruins. From the hotel line the flames
swept through the cottage colony, destroying more than fifty, including
many valuable summer residences. Summer Guests in Wild Ccamper. It was the , liveliest night the summer visitors ever had in Old Orchard.
All the hotels were crowded and the flight of the guests from the burning
hotels with as much of their possessions as they could carry quickly had the beach littered with trunks and clothes. The Old Orchard fire department was , utterly unable to handle the blaze, and the firemen from Portland, Biddeford, and Saco, who responded to calls for assistance, were hampered for some time after their arrival by difficulty with the hose couplings.
