Residents of the district around Vesuvius have put to practical use the lava which has flowed from the volcano In past and recent eruptions. Naples and Its vicinity appear to be a world of lava. The streets are paved with it. There are lava staircases and ptatues, drinking troughs, bric-a-brac and even jewelry. The guides make a profit out of it by pressing coins or other objects on partially cooled fragments and selling these to visitors. On
the ashy sides of the mountain there
Is enough lava to build a large city. In appearance it resembles a shoreless frozen sea of dull black that shimmers
trangely purple in some lights.

The feat of shipping a steel mast ICS feet long was accomplished by the Great Western railroad of England. The mast was three feet in diameter and weighed fourteen tons. The transportation was accomplished by loading the mast on seven cars, the great column being supported by bolsters on the second and fifth cars. The bolsters were eighty-five feet apart and the mast was sueessfully transported in this manner from Liverpool to Plymouth. Considerable difficulty was experienced in turning some of the sharper curves of the line and traffic was interrupted for a while at one or two

Col. C. W. Parker, founder and owner of the Great Parker Shows that are
to be seen here soon during the big
carnival week, has just received a letter from one of the foremost fraternal organizations of England which is a signal honor that has never been conferred before on a carnival organization. The letter requested Col. Parker to bring the Parker Shows to England
for an indefinite stay and afterwards take the shows through the different countries of the Continent. The letter went on to say that they were so anxious to have the Great Parker Shows in England, that the order writing were willing to guarantee the expenses of the organization from the United States to England and return, besides donating a sixteen acre lot in London for the show's use. When It is taken into consideration that the expenses of the show vduld amount to .close to $T.".kh for the trip alone, an idea of this magnificent offer can be gained. In all the history cf the carnival business, an offer of this character has never before been made. This speaks most highly of the Great Parker Shows and is evidence
that the name of the Great Parker Snows has gone far and wide through
foreign countries. The letter stated that they had se
Iected the Great Parker Shows on ac
count of their well known reputation
of freedom from gambling of every sort, and the clean, moral, high class tone of the different shows connected with the aggregation. The local committee was more than fortunate in being able to obtain the services of shows of this character for their big amusement week and the Great Parker Shows will come to this city heralded as the greatest, cleanest and most wholesome of their character in the world.

The Limit of Life. The most eminent medical scientists are unanimous in the conclusion that the generally accepted limitation of human life is many years below the attainment possible with the advanced knowledge of which the race is now possessed. The critical period, that determines its duration, seems to be between 50 and GO; the proper care of the body during this decade cannot be too strongly urged; carelessness then being fatal to longe-

of labor as against the unscrupulous methods of capital, as depicted in this
production. Not only does the Colonial company offer a list of standard plays, but in addition it has a long list of specialties which," with the plays make up an entertainment of nearly three hours in length at popular prices. Included in the list of specialties are some very clever stunts, one of the best of which is the work of Rose Noble, the charming little musical artist, whose work on various instruments, including the drum, Is of high order. Other specialties are given by Little Irma Wikoff. among the cleverest children on the American stage; Moore and Russell, the unique entertainers; Sara Treadwell, singer of up-to-date songs; Sadina, buck, wing and electrical dancer; Carroll Drew, the brain storm comedian; C. Edmund Siddons, character specialties, and Kathryn Benner, illustrated, song, "ByeBye, Dearie." From this it can readily be seen that there is no time left for a dull moment in the entire evening. The list of plays selected for the remainder of the week is as -follows: Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon, "The Gambler's Wife"; Wednes-
vaudevllle circuit. That this is true was fully attested at the New Phillips Monday night when the Initial production of "The Love Handicap" under the management of James B. Rice, was given in this city with Claude and Fannie Usher in the lead-
This is quite a pretentious
playlet, in fact the most pretentious
that has ever been offered the patrons of vaudeville at the New Phillips, and one can but wonder at the confidence of the promoters in taking such an expensive act on the road, but that it will prove a money maker is not doubted in the least by all those who have seen it and that it deserves to be is also as fully agreed. "The Love Handicap" is a delightful story of the love of a bootblack for the little waif girl he has picked up and cared for as if she were his sister, his heroic struggle against poverty, his own depreciation of his manly qualities, the ultimate discovery of the waif's lost parents and the just reward for right doings The playlet is well staged, with a dock scene
i along East River, the Hopkins racing
stables and the grandstand at Sheepshead track, where Sis, the waif, wins a race on her father's horse, Bluebird, even after her identity has been discovered by her parents. A cast of five is required for production of the
playlet in addition to numerous others as spectators to the race,, etc. There are five scenes presented but the scenery is handled in such a way that
that is more than can be caid cf some motorists." Still his loiwitp had to pay a fine of $!." and costs.
