CHAPTER I. tIE young Prencliman did very -well what he had planner! to do- His guess that the duke would cheat proved good. As the unshod half dozen figures that had been standing noiselessly in the entry way stole softly into the shadows of the chamber he leaned across the table and smilingly plucked a card out of the big Englishman's sleeve.
i "Herci, 31. le Due V he laughed, rising and stepping back from jthc table. The Englishman cried out, "It mean the dirty work of silencing you with my bare hands I" and came at him. "Do not move," said M. Beaucaire, so sharply that the other paused. "Observe behind you." The Englishman turned and saw what trap he had blundered into, then stood transfixed, impotent, alternately scarlet with rage and white with the vital shame of discovery. 31. Beaucaire remarked, indicating the silent figures by a polite wave of the hand, "Is it not a compliment to monsieur that I procure six large men to subdue him? IThey are quite devote' to me, and monsieur is alone. Could it be that he . did not wish even his lackeys to know he play with the yo'ng 'Frenchman who Meestafre Nash doe3 not like in the pomp room? 3Ionsieur is unfortunate to have come on foot and alone to my apartment." ' , The duke's mouth foamed over with chaotic revilement. His cap-
Itor smiled brightly and made a slight gesture, as one who brushes aside a boisterous insect. With the same motion he quelled to stony piiet a resentful impetus of his servants toward the Englishman. ! "It's murder, is it, yon carrion!" finished the duke. ' 3L Beaucaire lifted his shoulders in a mock shiver. "What words! !No,"no, no! Xo killing! A such word to a such host ! Xo, no; not mur-r-der: only disgrace!" ILo laughed a clear, light laugh with a rising -'Wion, seeming to launch himself upon an adventurous quest for rhy. ' . .: littlo devilish scullion V spat out the duke. "j i;tf tut! But I forget. 3LYnsieur has pursue' his studies of deportment amongs' his fellow countrymen." "Do you dream a. soul in Bath will take your word that I that I" "That 31. le Due de Winterset had a card up his sleeve V "You pitiful stroller, you stable boy, born in a stable" "Is it not an honor to be born where monsieur must have been bred?" "You scurvy footboy,"you greasy barber, you cutthroat groom"
"HEHCI, M. L"Overwhelm' !' The young man tion. "M. le Duo appoint me to all
"You mustachioed fool, there are not five people of quality in TJath will sneak to vou" "Xo, monsieur, not on the parade; but how many come to play with me here Because I will play always, night or day, for what one will, for any long and al-ways fair, monsieur." "Vou outrageous varlet! Every one knows you came to England as the French ambassador's barber. What man of fashion will listen to vou i Who will believe vou V , ' "All people, monsieur. Do you think I have not calculate, that I "aall make a failure of my little enterprise V "Bah!" "Will monsieur not reseat himself V M. Beaucaire made a low bow. "So. We must not be too tire for Lady Malboume's rout. Ha, ha ! And you, Jean, Victor, and you others, retire. Go in the hallway. Attend at the entrance, Francois. So. Xow we shall talk. Monsieur, I wish you to think very cool. Then listen; I will be briefly. It is that I am well known to be all, entire' hones'. Gamblist ? Ah, yes, true and moa' profitable, but fair al-ways fair. Every one say that. Is it not so? Think of it. And is there never a w'isper come to 31. le Due that not all people belief him to play al-ways hones ? Ha, ha I Did it almos' be said to him las year, after when lie play with Milor Tappin'ford at the chocolate house""You dirty scandal monger !" the duke burst out. "111' (Continued Tomorrow.)

BEAKS OF BIRDS. Marvelous Way Each Is Adapted to It Special Us. Did it ever strike you in what au abrlute!y njarrehvis wny the teaks of birds are adapted each to It special use? The uiost casual glauce at a sparrow or a bullfinch shows yo;i tliat it beak is blunt, short, thick and strong, perfectly adapted for cracking the strsls or tcraia which form the larger part of the food of all Ouches. Then look at the thrush's long and rather slen ier bill, curved slightly aloug its whole length. What could be more useful for dipping into the soft, wet earth nnd pulling out big. fat lugworms or poking among dead leaves for grub, beetle and larvae? Thrushei and blackbirds and ail their tribe live almost entirely on animal food, with a little fruit, such as strawberries, now and then for dessert, so they are ier-
haps the most realiy useful of all our tribes of comaiou birds. The slen.ler. delicate bills of warblers show that they feed principally on smaller insects, which they search for amid the foliage of trees and shrulu or, more rarely, in the grass and uerlage along the ground. Fiaut lice and spiders they clear off In tens of thousands. Few beaks could be more useful to their owner than that of the fairly common yet little known bird, the feru owl or niibtjar. It is very short and weak, yet its wide gape Is a perfect trap for the night flying moths that form Master Nightjar's evening meal. Similar, too, are the swallow und martin tribe, ail of which hawk through the upper air for flying Insects. The bill of the great black woodpecker will serve as a very good example of all his tribe. You see how chisel-like is the shape of his powerful instrument, how exquisitely adapted for driving Into the recess of rough barks and extracting therefrom grubs and other wood boring Insects. Ills tongue, too, is most curiously formed, but that hardly falls within the scope of this ltttle article. The beak of the wild sea eagle Is the beak of the typical bird of prey. Its tremendous power, backed by the steel-like muscles of the neck, show the flesh eating habits of all the birds of prey tribe. The kestrel Is the commonest example that we have In this country, and next the sparrow hawk. The owls, too, show, by the particular shape of their bills, a similar carnivorous habit. Cincinnati Commercial Tribune., If this concerns too. read carefollvi tit. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsia Is positively cuaranteed to cure indigestion, constipation, sick headache, offensive breath, malaria and all diseases arising from stomach trouble.
