4 Grev;ncastle, Ind., Ju..r 22. janies Paxton Voorhees, poet, novelist, sculptor and actor and son of the late distinguished Daniel Wolsey Voornees, is now laying his plan3 to forsake the muse for a short time and take up what he is pleased to call the "final; life line." ) The father of James Paxton Voor-i hees made name and fame for himself in public life and, although the son finds his greatest pleasure in other' lines, he also decides to become a factor in public life. With this In view James J'axton Voorhees soon will re-; move to lerre "ante, wtiere he wmtane up me iinai me line, wnicni in unpoetic terms means a race for the nomination for congressman on the democratic ticket. Mr. Voorhees has become strongly identified with politics in the Fifth district. For several years he has made his home at Greencrstle. However, he has never relinquished his residence at Terre Haute and it is from this vantage point that he will make hi3 final stand for political preferment. However, it is not in the political career of Mr. Voorhees that his friends find, the keenest intelsst. It is Voorhees, the man, that is engrossing. His fellow citizens of Greencastle like his poetry; they like his sculpture; they like his wit and above all they like the man himself. These things, while secondary in a political way, will likely prove to great benefit when the son of the "Tall Sycamore of the Wabash" takes up his final life line. Native Born Hcosier. James Paxton Voorhees, well known in the State of Indiana for many achievements of public interest, is a loyal native-born Hoosier citizen, having through no fault of his own, as he puts it considerately, come Into the world in 1S5-5 he is thus, he says, resnon-1 sibie for fifty-one years of forbearance on the part of his neighbors and community. His education was partially obtained in the Terre Haute public schools. For a short time he attended Georgetown University at Washington, D. C. He is a student of birds, grass, and ' 1 flowers, though no less of men and institutions. His quarter of a century of service as the private secretary of his father at Washington, afforded a rare opportunity for observation. The wonderful versatility of the son of the senator fairly entitles him to a place of his own in the category of prominent and distinguished men. His works as a sculptor have secured him a place among the foremost American artists. His busts of Napoleon and Thomas Jefferson, . executed under commission of the United States state department for the World's Fair at St. Louis, find favor in the highest art testimonials of the country. They were well received at the Corcoran National Gallery of Art at Washington; were exhibited at the LewisClark Exposition, and are associated with the Government exhibit at Jamestown. Marked, in this connection, are his memorial busts of John C. Breckinridge and Richard Mentor Johnson, the latter the reputed slayer of the Indian chief Tecumseh. These busts occupy marble niches in the gallery of Vice Presidents at Washington. A signal achievement on the part of Mr. Voorhees is the memorial bust of his father. Voorhees has attained note in the bust of Charles Cramp, the builder of the American Navy, and In his study for the statue to be erected at Washington to Indiana's great son, Robert Dale Owen, to commemorate his priceless services to the Smithsonian In stitute. Mr. Voorhees's "Head of the Sav ior" was said by Cardinal Gibbons to be among the best he had ever seen. Voorhees's novel, "The Tale of Wealth," represented him in the mem bership of the Indiana literary colony at the World's Fair in 1S93, and is a work of kindly, pleasing interest.
