WITH A GREAT MANY PEOPLE

THE ONLY RESOURCE OPEN IS

THE EXCITING GAME "THUMBS

UP."

The local elevator men have been

kept busy for the past two days, in

making preparations for receiving the wheat crop, which will begin its in

flow Monday afternoon, if it does not

rain today or Monday to prevent

threshing. Empty freight cars are be

ing left on the elevator sidetracks and

from present indications Richmond

elevator men will not suffer a famine

for freight cars this year as was the

case last year, and which would nec

essarily hold back grain shipments out

of this city.

Reports centering in Richmond are

to the effect that old traction engines and threshing machines are being put

in order preparatory to the work

which will soon begin.

A local elevator man said Saturday that wheat that is threshed out wet or out of condition in any way, will not

be received until it has been dried and

is in condition to ship.

Local elevator men, on the eve of the threshing season, are expecting

thousands of bushels of grain to come to this city for shipment. Last year all previous Wayne county records

were broken for the amount of wheat

harvested, and although this record is

not expected to be met this year owing to the shorter crop, it is expected a large crop will be turned over to the local millers and elevator men. For the benefit of those who would be directly interested in knowing the amounts of wheat reaching the local market the Palladium has made ar

rangements to publish each day tne

total amount of grain hauled onto the

local market.

AN EMPLOYMENT BUREAU

Railroads Centering in Chica

go May Establish One.

Chicago, July 20 The railroads cen

tering in this city are now considering

the advisability of establishing an em-

ninvmpnt bureau to secure a oeuer

grade of operating employes.

At this time of the year when the residents of Richmond have nothing more to do to spend their summer

evenings than indulge in the hilarious and exciting games of "Simon says thumbs up," the old amusement park

agitation has again made' its appear

ance, and from the amount of talk that

is going the rounds in Richmond, and avowed pledges of support for such a venture, barrels of money could be coined by some enterprising man who wished to erect a White City or some

other kindred amusement park in the

immediate vicinity of Richmond. Richmond people generally have the choice of playing "tiddle-de-winks" or

going to bed, ana a lacK or some amusement feature to pass away the warm summer evenings is keenly felt.

Many of these persons in favor of

the establishment of a first class

amusement park, and the majority of its followers are reliable business men, would have a portion of Glen Miller turned over for this use. If he had any assurance that a portion of the Glen could be secured for an amusement park, a local business man said

Saturday, that he would be willing to

heavily back such a venture, if a few

other men could be induced to make

an investment in the scheme. That a good amusement park in Richmond would be a money maker is not contradicted.

It has been rumored that the Terre

Haute, Indianapolis ana r-asiern trac

tion line intended to interest men of

AMERICAN POPULATION That at Manila Is Placed at 5,175.

Manilla, July 20. The American population of this city has been determined to be 5,175 including 4,194 males and 9S1 females.

"Kangaroo" is a queer word. It means "I don't understand'' in the tongue of the Australian aborigines. When this strange animal was first beheld by Europeans they inquired of the aborigines: "What is its name?" And the puzzled reply gave the animal its name.

TO MAKE ANJXPER1MENT Scientific Grain Inspection Will Be Studied.

Washington, July 20. Experimental laboratories for the study of sci

entific grain inspection ana graaing are to be established soon at New York, Minneapolis, Duluth and St. Louis, and a research laboratory will be opened in Washington. The department of agriculture has $40,000 to spend in the year opening July 1 on this work. The previous year it had only $15,000, and there are strong indications that next year it may have a million or more and a general

commission to take supervision of the entire business of determining the

grade and character of grain.
