Amusements
Vaudeville at the Phillips. Manager Murray Is confident that the bill he has secured for the patrons of the New Phillips next week in vaudeville, will be found the most entertaining in months. A special effort is being made to get the patrons of the house the best that i3 to be had for cities the size of Richmond and that success is attending these efforts will be fully attested by the announcement for next week. One of the brightest spots will be the act of John A. West, the musical brownie, who comes direct from Kieth's, New York. It will be noticed that the program, which is given below in full, differs greatly from those preceding it. Overture Mr. Chas. L. Stone, musical director. The three Ilylands, comedy singing, dancing and music, introducing Master Hyland, said to be the youngest baton manipulator in the world. Illustrated song, Cal Lankert, "If
the Man in the Moon Were a Coon."
C. II. Henella, presenting the latest
est sensational illusion, "Rosa the
Singing Head." John Goss, comedy trick bone so
loist.
John A. West, the musical brownie. The cameragraph, showing "Canada" and "The Electric Belt." Tonight the usual double performance will be given. Repertoire at the Gennett. Amateur night at the Gennett, Friday, proved to be a big success, and the
audience in attendance was the largest since the Cutter Stock company opened there on Monday night, filling the house entirely. There were four who took part in the amateur contest Edwin Smith, dance; Helen Fall, recita
tion; Gertrude Huddleston, recitation,
and Eddie King, blackface minstrel
stunt. All were warmly received.
Smith was given an enthusiastic recall
and young King set the house wild with his clever work. He was award
ed the $3 offered by the company for the best act. The Cutters will conclude their first week tonight with an
other performance of "The Moonshiners," one of their best bills, and will
open on Monday night with "The Red
Cross Nurse," which will continue through Tuesday and for the Wednes
day matinee. Wednesday and Thurs
day nights, "Dora Thome" will be the
offering and on Friday and Saturday
night and Saturday matinee, "Deadwood Dick." The Cutters, who came here with the intention of staying
probably four weeks, have a most sat
isfactory outlook for business during
the whole time.
WILL SET DATE
LICHTPIM VOTE Hagerstown Council Will Act Monday Night.
RESULT NOT IN DOUBT.
Hagerstown, Ind., July 32. Next Monday night, at a regular meeting, council will set the date for an election to determine what can be done in regard to the purchase of new city electric light plant, and said election will occur in about twenty days from next Monday. The council favors its purchase and will take the plant and light our streets and sell light for private use, if a majority of the voters of the corporation vote that way. The proper legal steps will be taken at once to hold an election for the purpose of ascertaining the wishes of the voters. There has been considerable talk over town on the subject recently, both sides of the question being presented, as was to be expected, both sides having earnest advocates. A competent mathematician has just computed the approximate cost of such a plant to each tax payer. Taking $$,- OOO cost to place the plant ready to run as a basis, and our present taxables as a source to draw from, and fifteen years as the time in which to pay the $8,000, it would cost each taxpaj er just one'tenth more taxes than he is now paying. A man that is now paying $10 per year tax, would have to pay $11 per year just one dollar more.
"When the late shah of Persia was In London,' said a member of the British legation, "he amused himself at a dinner party at a ducal resideuce in Park lane by appraising the beauty of the
ladies present in terms of sheep. Thus for a blond counters he said he would give 1.200 sheep; for a tall, slim baroness be said he would give 2.000 sheep;
for a peeress of middle aare he said he would give 250 sheep, and so on. Finally the shah came to the beautiful Mrs. Willie James. Everybody waited
In anxious silence to hear the old heathen state her value In sheep, for she
Is thought to be the most beautiful woman in London. The shah looked at Mrs. James tenderly. He shook his bead and sighed.

The Loon.
The loon Is found in all the northern states. It Is a very awkward bird on land, but a graceful and rapid swimmer. It Is a remarkable diver, and It is thought that no other feathered creature can dive so far beneath the surface or remain so long a time under water. A specimen was once found attached to the hook of a fisherman's set line in Seneca lake, it having dived nearly 100 feet to reach the bait. It feeds on lizards, fish, frogs, all kinds of aquatic insects and the roots of fresh water plants, usually swallowing its food under water. It is a very large bird, about three feet in length, and spreads its wings fully fire feet. It builds Its nest in marshes, near water, of rushes and grass, which it twists together in a huge heap on the ground, usually among tall reeds. The eggs, usually three In number, are a little over three Inches long and in color of a dull greenish ocher, with indistinct spots of dark umber, most numerous toward the broad end. During the winter this bird lives near the seashore, especially In the salt marshes on the Long Island coast and along the shores of the Chesapeake, but in the summer It goes as far north r. Maine to breed.

Coalite is the latest novelty in the

of coal, while a coalite fire lasts 40

When people talk about one thing and keep on talking as they do about the discovery that created so much newspaper comment in Richmond and other cities during the past summer, even though many reports may be exaggerated, there must be some merit in the discovery, and when people spend their money for a thing and then buy more of It, proof of merit is so convincing that it becomes the duty of every person In need of Root Juice to go to Luken's drug store and get a bottle of this much talked of remedy. Root Juice cures rheumatism and catarrh because it puts the filtering machines of the body to work and causes them to filter the impurities of the blood. Root Juice cures stomach and bowel troubles because it removes irritated and ulcerated conditions from the mucous linings and causes a natural flow of digestive fluIds.
