WHITE TO BE GIVEN TRIAL IN THE BOX

Star Twiner-With Earlham the Past Season Is Signed By Jessup.

FISHER STAYS AT THIRD.

CAMERON, JESSUP AND JUSTICE ARE TRYING FOR BATTING HONORS WILTERMOOD VALUABLE PLAYER.

While walking along a street in Crediton, England, a citizen was alarmed when something sprang at him from the roadway. He brushed his hand over his coat and a large rat fell to the ground. The rat made further attacks on the man. who experienced , some difficulty in keeping it off. Several passersby came to his assistance, but it was some time before they were able to kill the rat.

If this concerns yoa. read carefully. Lir. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin Is positively guaranteed to cure indigestion, constipation, sick headache, offensive breath, malaria and all diseases arising from stomach trouble.

(By Tort.) "Cap" White, the big right hander. who was the star twirler of the Earlham ball team this year, .and who graduated from that Institution last month, is to be given a trial in professional company by Manager Jessup. White Is a big. well built young man.

He has speed to burn, good control and

a nice assortment of curves. Several weeks ago Richmond traveled to Reid field to teach the college boys how to play the came. The locals met Mr.

White, and the big fellow fed them crow from his hand. The professionals

were absolutely powerless to do any

thing with his delivery. He Is cool

land steady add a hard worker. Memibers of the local team all have nice

things to say about him and predict

that he will make good. Manager

Jessup has telephoned White at his home in Carthage. Ind.. telling him to report as soon as possible. If White makes good it will mean Fisher's retention at third base and a pitching staff composed of Moore, Fleming and White. Game Called Off. Owing to the big cloud leak Thursday, the game scheduled with Portland at Athletic park was called off. Manager Jessup sent a telegram to the Jays early in the morning calling off the game, but they had left for this city before the wire was received. Consequently when they arrived here they had to turn around and go right back Kgain. We are Inclined to the belief that the Portland outfit is in league with the Rain Maker. One series vl games with the Jays was played off

early in the season without the big wet interfering but Mr. Winter was

a prominent spectator. Since then attempts have been made to play off Quaker-Jay contests here but cloud bursts have always washed these games away. In the future if the Jays visit here we would advise Manager Jessup to either get out an injunction against the Weather man or to have Athletic park declared a "Cry" ward. Game On Today. This afternoon at o'clock there will be a Richmond-Kokomo mixup at Athletic park. The same teams will hook up again at Athletic park Saturday afternoon. Moore is scheduled to work against the Combines this afternoon and Fleming will work Saturday. These will be two good contests , and if the weather permits should attract good crowds. Ritter Is Crippled. Thomas Ritter. demon center fielder and two base hit swatter of note, is limping about with a spavined limb. The New Castle Rabbit allow.ed one of his pins to come in contact with a pitched ball during the second Van Wert game. The pin went to the hospital and the ball to the repair shop. Two veterinaries labored with the dismantled prop Thursday and Thomas will be able to continue biffing doubles and flitting about center terrace without the aid of crutches. For Batting Honors. Cameron. Jessup and Justice are having a stiff scrap for batting honors. All three are stinging the ball hard at the present - time, especially Cameron. The first baseman had a hit famine for a short time, but he is now back in form again and is getting his regularly. James is also playing his position in a most acceptable manner. Justice has been clouting the ball in a most reliable manner for two

or three weeks and can always be depended upon for one or two hits per

game. Jessup is the pinch hitter ofj

the outfit and is tingling near the mark. Is a Valuable Player. 7 The fans are just beginning to awake

to the fact that Grins Wlltermood in left field. 13 a valuable player. His! fielding has been spectacular and he fsj now finding his batting eye. The lit-' tie fellow early in the season wentj south, where he contracted malaria. When he returned north this disease j greatly affected his playing, but the j malaria is now out of his system and the languid actions have departed with i it. Wiltermood is remarkably fast on

his feet. He takes long strides like a distance runner and keeps close to the ground when playing tag with Father

Time. How would a 1X yard dash j

between Ritter and Wiltermood do? There Is a discussion among the fans as to which of these two players can cover the ground the faster. Jessup could also qualify in this event.

Local dealers state that the raspberry crop is particularly short at the present time and they are having a hard time to secure good raspberries for market. The majority of the berries placed on the local market are from the farm of Stephen Kuth, who has told the local merchants that there will be a short crop this year. Georgia water melons -are now cn sale in Richmond and are retailing at fifty cents per. but are being sold rapIdly. The melons on sale in the local

573 ' markets at the presen time are from

the southern states, are particularly good, in fact they are the best shipped melons ever reaching Richmond. The majority of them are of the "Rattlesnake" variety and are very sweet and therefore delicious. One of the particular features connected with the green stuff situation is the rapid disappearance of radishes and lettuce. Owing to the warm weather in the past few days the radishes are becoming pithy and are therefore very poor. Lettuce, too. is becoming scarce and the market for it is declining. It is expected that a large quantity of wild dew berries will be pushed onto the market within a few days. The

cultivated berry is almost as scarce as

the raspberry, but a large yield of wild one3 is confidently expected. Uniformity of the price of country butter has caused comment. The price has not varied five cents In the past year, remaining generally at the

twenty-five cent figure. ood creamery butter remains at the thirty cent figure. The reasons given for the uniformity of the butter quotations is the fact that the creameries are monopolizing a large portion of the milk, and therefore the price of country- butter remains high, as the country house wives cannot make as much as in past years. There are a few strawberries on the local market, but these are not up o the standard reached by those in past

weeks. They are watery and cone quently not very good.

Richmond people are paying more

for their groceries than ever before, simply because the wholesale prices on

much stuff has increased and conse

quently the retail prices have also in

creased in comparison.

Making Bread at Home Isn't a very pleasant occupation in warm weather. It may be ail right if everything is lovely; the baby is a "perfect angel, and the stove draws fust right, and the oven is the right temperature, and various other "its; but then it's never this way. Better buy Victor Bread and not take any chances. Yours truly, Richmond Baking Co.
