CLEVER PITCHING DID THE BUSINESS; SHILOHS DEFEATED

Fireman" Fisher Kept the Chemicals Close at Hand And Extinguished the Visitors Just in Time.

AFTERNOON GAME WAS MOST INTERESTING ONE.

Score Was Frequently Tied And the Result Was in Doubt Until Near the Close Miller Was on the Bench.

Fireman Save-Me-Child" Fisher extinguished the Dayton Shilohs Thursday afternoon at Athletic park in a patriotic exhibition of "clever pitching. The Fireman was touched up for eight lilts, but he kept the hard blngling Shilohs under control at all times. Whenever they threatened to flame up and cause a baseball tragedy, the Human Hoe Cart would douse on the chemicals and smother 'era. Nothing to It. F3ck of Fisher there was good support except in right field, where Cunningham allowed two easy chances to f.et away from hlni. Fortunately, sharp work by the other members of the team prevented these two errors from becoming costly. Eight hits, two of them screaming three baggers, wen ir.ade by the locate and they came when hits meant runs. "Doggy" Miller rt'Stt'd on th bench during the game, his plate at third base being held down by a Mr. Siuibb from LaPorte, I ml. Mr. Squibb played a nice game and handles himself 3ike a ball player. Game Was Interesting. The game itself, was quite interest

ing, being nip and tuck from the pistol to tho wire. Witn one down in the first, Dayton looked threatening with three men on bases, but a sharp double play by Jessup and Squibb put an end to the anxiety. In the second Stines got a life on Cunningham's second error, after one was down, but he and Asper were immediately cut down by a second fast double play, Fisher to Justice to Cameron. In the third, Pitcher Mercer led another storming party against Fort

Fisher. This was a hand to hand grapple, and during the fireworks, one Shiloh runner was allowed to cross the plate. Feldhaus was retired and Reibald drew his base. He was retired on a fielder's choice. The mighty Ben Huckins then came to bat and scored Mercer on a single. Morganthaler struckout. Came Right Back. Richmond came right back at the enemy in its half of the third. With two down Ritter drew a bag and was immediately shipped home by a beautiful line drive by Cameron to deep left, which netted three bags. Justice died in an attempt to score Cameron. Neither team scored in the fourth or f.'fth. In the sixth the Shilohs exploded a couple of two baggers in honor of the nation's birthday. Blank, first up, drew his base on four wide ones. Huckins flew out and then came the explosion. Mr. Morganthaler hit one on the baziz for two bags and Blank counted. Legge then connected for another double, counting the lad with the lengthy name. Fireman Fisher then produced his chemicals and extinguished two distinguished batsmen, thereby ending the agony. In our half of the sixth, we tried to

even up the scores, but fell short one run. With two down. Justice singled and came home on Jessup's delicious triple to center. Minzler grounded out. Locals Took Lead. No more runs for Dayton in tho seventh but the locals pounded In two which allowed them to nose into the lead, 4 to 3. Cunningham got a life on an error, then Squibb singled. Up came Grins Wiltermood and he pasted one to center which was captured. As soon as the ball was caught Cumiy lit out for home and Morganthaler heaved to Asper at the plate, but the latter allowed the heave to escape hini which allowed both Cunningham and Squibb to count. Ritter drew his base "but was retired trying to steal second. In the first-of the eighth the pesky

Shilohs again sewed up the game, 4 to 4. With one down Huckins singled and scored on Morganthaler's line drive for three bases. The fire alarm was once more sent in and Fireman Fisher doused the glim by breezing the next two batsmen. This fact aroused great excitement among Mr. Fisher's North Twelfth street neighbors who were present in . great chunks. Clinched the Game. Richmond clinched the game in the last of the eighth. Cameron singled. Justice got a life on an error. Jessup flew out. Minzler hit a Texas leaguer and the bags were full. Mr. Cunningham, itching to redeem himself for his two very yellow errors, came to bat. The redemption of Geo. Cunningham was a beautiful one act affair which had some sense to it. Mr. Cunningham smote a long, furry biffle to deep left and his compatriots, Messrs. Justice and Cameron dusted over the plate. In the ninth the Shilohs tried a rally, but there was nothing diding.
