THERE IS NOTHING AT THIS TIME
TO INDICATE THAT ANY CHANGE WILL BE MADE AT AN EARLY DATE.
If the Bell Telephone interests in
this city have any idea of turning their
local exchange business over to the In
dependents, it fcems to be evry re
mote, as the Central Union company is
making a particular endeavor to secure
new subscribers for the local exchange at the present time. The company is using all manner of inducements to get people to place the phones- in their homes. The system of wiring is being improved every day. while it is said that in the near future a complete new system of exchange boards will be placed la the endeavor to make the "old"
i phone system Is one of the best ever in
Richmond. The Home telephone company 13 also pushing its work and the battle promises to go merrily on. It is known to be a fact that local
Central Union telephone officers and those over the entire state, favor a merger of the Independent and Bell interests in this city, notwithstanding the improvements being made. It was stated Wednesday by a Bell telephone man that' it Is Highly probable the merger will be made some time.
When asked as to why the Bell inter
ests are attempting to enlarge their lo
cal business if they expect to turn it
over to the Independent company in
exchange for the toll business, the lo
cal man said that this he could not ac
count for, but the Bell interests had ordered a systematic campaign for new local business in Richmond. It is
thought that the Bell company is pre
paring for a fight if the Independents
do not accept its terms of merger, and is simply preparing to enlarge extensively its service here, if the plans for
a merger fall through with.

It Is understood that Cedar Springs hotel will shortly be opened, one or two parties now having negotiations on for lease of the property. It seems to be the" general impression that the hotel was closed because it
did not have a successful season last
year. However, this is not the reason why the beautiful resort, has not been
opened this summer.
Dr. Hooven, who managed the ho
tel last summer, had a lease on the
property which expired this last spring. It is understood that Dr. Hooven desired to secure another lease on the resort, but the owners
of the property in 'Dayton turned him down. According to reliable Information Dr. Hooven offered to take a five year lease on the property, but his proposition was turned down because the owners thought he should take a ten year lease. This Dr. Hooven absolutely refused to do. It is now stated tliat experienced
hotel men desire to secure control of the resort and that the owners will soon close a ten year lease with one of these men. If the hotel is again opened it Is probable that it will be continued as a summer resort with a medical staff attached. The baths will also be continued and Xavaho water will be bottled for export.. It was reported that the resort would be turned into a sanatarium, but this is very improbable.
