Although thousands of stamps are generally sold when exposition issues are placed on sale, the number of

Jamestown stamps disposed of at the local postoffice has been comparative

ly small in comparison with the sale of

stamps other exposition years. Uptodate there have been only 8.00O one-

cent stamps, 30.000 two-cent and 1,100

five-cent exposition issue stamps sold from the local office. These have all been called for as sales of these stamps are made only when the issue is asked for. It is the hope of the postoffice department to sell all stamps under the Jamestown issue before Nov. 1. In years past exposition stamps have been the source of loss to the department as millions are generally left on hands.

Property Owners Oppose Construction of Cement Walks On North Ninth.

IT WILL BE UNAVAILING.

PREVAILING SENTIMENT IN COUNCIL IS FAVORABLE TO THE IMPROVEMENT AND THE ORDINANCE WILL PASS.

There was a merry fight in council Monday evening over an ordinance providing for the construction of cement walks on North Ninth street from A to Elm Place. This improvement was ordered by the board, but there was a remonstrance against it, so the board referred the matter to council for final action. An attempt was made to pass the ordinance under suspension of the rules, but this plan was sidetracked by Councilman Deuker and Bartel. Unanimous consent of council is required to take final action on an ordinance under suspension of the rules. Mr. Deuker opposed the ordinance because he is of the firm opinion that every improvement, such as the one proposed on North Ninth street is a public benefit and that the entire cost of such an improvement should not be placed on the shoulders of the affected property owners. He thought the city should pay a share of the cost of each improvement. Mr. Deuker stated that for many years the city paid the cost of intersections and that the plan had been a success, but that for some unknown reason It was abandoned and now the affected property owners had to pay for the construction of intersections. Is Sure to Pass. The North Ninth street improvements, when turned over to council was referred to the streets and alleys committee. Monday evening. Chairman Von Pein, of this committee, stated that the committee advised this improvement. He said that there were sixteen petitioners and seventeen remonstrators. In consulting with these remonstrators. one stated he was opposed to the improvement on account of three widow women who would be effected. Another remonstrator said that he was sorry he had not signed the petition. Mr. Von Pein stated that further investigation showed that two of the three widows referred to, could meet the assessment without embarrassment. He also stated that it had been estimated that the cost of the improvement would amount to 80 cents per lineal foot or $40 for a fifty foot lot and that the property owners affected could have ten years in paying off this assessment. For the reasons outlined by Mr. Von Pein, the committee decided to recommend the improvement. There were several remonstrators present and they vigorously opposed the improvement, which was advised by Councilman Englebert, who is a resident of North Ninth street. He stated that that street had the worst walks In the city. Eventually the ordinance is sure to be passed.

LONG LIVE THE KING is the popular cry throughout European countries; while in America, the cry of the present day is "Long live Dr. King's New Discovery, King of Throat and Lung Remedies!" of which Mrs. Julia Ryder Paine, Truro, Mass., says: "It never fails to give immediate relief and to quickly cure a cough or cold." Mrs. Paine's opinion is shared by a ' majority of the inhabitants of this country. New Discovery cures weak lungs and sore throats after all other remedies have failed; and for coughs and colds it's the proven remedy. Guaranteed by A. G. Luken & Co., druggists. ,'0c and $1.00.
