After Beating and Kicking

LPALLADIUM WANT ADS PAY.
Mondav eveniner about (5:30 o'clock
while William Golden, who was recent
ly retired from the Dolice force, was
crossing the Panhandle tracks at the
North Eighth street crossing, he met Earl Huntineton and Jim Kellev. two
police characters with whom Golden had. had considerable trouble while a member of the force. Huntington ap
proached Golden and asked him for a
match. While Golden's right hand
was in his coat pocket searching for a match, Huntington struck him a vic
ious blow in the jaw. A fierce fight
then ensued and in a few minutes a
crowd of from seventy-five to a hundred men and boys had been attracted
to the scene.
While Golden was using his fists
with telling effect on his assailant, and had knocked him down once or
twice. Kelley. who had been witness
ing the fight a short distance away,
came to Huntington s rescue ana
tripped Golden, throwing him to the
crossing. Kelley and Huntington then
began to brutally kick the prostrate
and defenseless man. rot a person in the crowd which witnessed this cow
ardly assault offered to lend a hand
in assisting the former police officer.
Assailants Ran Away. After almost kicking Golden into in
sensibility. Kelley and Huntington
took to their heels and up to this noon were still at larce. Golden was taken
to his home, 826 North I street, where
his injuries were attended to by a nhvsician. Golden's nose is fractured
and he is suffering from bruises in various parts of his body. While painfully hurt, it is stated, his injuries are not of a serious nature.
A short time ago Golden arrested
Huntington, who has spent more time
the countv jail than any otner live
men in the county, for trespass. Hunt
ington tried to escape and Goiaen snot
at him. Huntington then vowea mat as soon as Golden was retired from the
police force he would "get him for this act and for other things. Kelley also holds a grievance against Golden and he had made the same vow that Huntington had. Kelley is. like Huntington, a police character. Some years ago he was arrested for assaulting Dennis Dwyer, an aged man, with a hoe, nearly killing his victim. Monday night Officer Staubach saw Huntington at a distance in the rail-ro-ul yards but Earl took to his legs and escaped. .Both men were seen later in Glen Miller park and It is probable that they will be arrested
TOWNSHIP PAYS $4,700.
Another chapter of the suit filed here on Monday by the Farmers and Merchants' bank of Bryant against Benj. F. Miller to recover on township warrants, is told by the Portland
Commercial-Review as follows:
The case of the Farmers and Mer
chants Bank of Bryant, against Bear-
creek township, for the collection of
warrants issued by the township, aggregating several thousand dollars,
the payment of which was contested
on the ground that the contraction of
the debt had never been autllirized by the township advisory board, has been compromised, after a couple of
years' litigation in the course of
which one case was tried and a sec
ond was commenced twice, and as many times withdrawn from the jury after a portion of the evidence had
been heard. By the terms of the
agreement made, the township pays
the bank the sum of $4,700. The bank
officials held out for a larger figure
i for a time, but finally agreed upon i
the sum mentioned. Monday suit was
filed at Richmond against Benj. F.
Miller, former president of the bank, to collect the remainder of the money.

A Chestnut.
Ralph Waldo Emerson once told of a
friend who always carried iu his pock
et a horse chestnut as a protection against rheumatism, just as other peo
ple wear shiekls and other specifics.
Emerson thus testifies to the results In his friend's case: "He has never had the rheumatism sice he began to carry
it, and indeed it appears to have had
a retrospective operation, for he never
had it before."
