THE EVIL OF DIVORCE. In the Delineator for July, Cardinal Gibbons f.'ays the modern divorce and urges a change in our divorce .laws. Th3 cardinal has tackled a problem that , Is rapidly assuming grave proportions in the moral life of our country. Year after year the number of divorces has steadily Increased. In Wayne county, for example, the number of divorce suits so far this year is a third greater than for the corresponding period a :year ago. That brings the growing i evil home to us. Many of our modern divorces are little better than Mormonism. There are many instances to bear out this statement. Only a month or so ago the president of one of the greatest corporations in the world secured a divorce from a wife who had been to him all that a wife should be and then married another woman. In a divorce case such as this the man does not seek a divorce from his first wife for any other purpose than to b free to marry another woman who has chanced to catch his fancy. And this Is just as much polygamy as is Mormonism. The old Greeks and Romans were accustomed to trade wives with their friends. The modern divorce In many ways resembles the ancient and vice-worn custom of those ancient and immoral people. Of course, that is only one phase of the divorce evil. In some cases we cannot but feel that a divorco Is justified. If a man or woman be tied to a mate who is absolutely unbearable, then divorce ,i3 justifiable. Divorces of this kind, however, could doubtless be lessened if more care were exercised in the choice of a mate, and in this regard it might be well to change our marriage laws in euch a way as to give all engaged couples ample opportunity to become thoroughly acquainted with one an other before taking the final step of matrimony. There Is really no use to pass stringent laws making divorce more difficult to obtain if the causes leading up to it are not remedied. And In this connection it might be a wise 'provision if some method of arbitration could' be arranged between couples desiring a divorce. A lot of us are enthusiastic about arbitrating the differences between capital and labor so why not arbitrate the differences Ibetween a man and wife desirous of isecuring a divorce? Perhaps it would he possible to settle the affair amicably and keep free of courts. AGREEMENT PROBABLE WrajHOBT.. TIME Condition of Potter's Field to Be Remedied. TRUSTEE POTTER'S VIEWS. It Is highly probable the board of -works and Township Trustee Potter will agree on the potter's field improvement proposition which was left to them some months ago. Although the field is in a disgraceful condition, tho matter still drags. Trustee Potter states that not in many years lias there been any; pauper buried in the field from Wayne township, outfclde of JtlchAond. the majority of those being interred there being from Kichtnond. For this reason, he said he does not think It fair for the township to have to bear a portion of the expense of the Improvement- There is no township tax from which the township's share of the expense could te deducted either, Mr. Potter said. The story of the reappearance of the Archduke Johann Salvator of Austria, who gave up his royal rank for the sake of a pretty actress, and disappeared under the name of Johann Orth, again has stirred Vienna society. The two women at the top are Lori Stubel, on the right, the fascinating variety actresS, who disappeared with the Archduke, and Anna Stubel, her sister. Below at the left is a picture of the Archduke as he looked just before his disappearance. At the right he is shown in his uniform as an Austrian officer.
Dr. J. M. Thurston Makes Plain Position on Science-Christianity
"Know then thyself, Presume not God to scan; The proper study of mankind Is man." Our first contention is, that science is one thing and Christianity as -taught by the various Christian religions, is quite another and different question; yet it is true that the fundamental doctrine of Christ involves all that is purest and best in the scipnee of civ ic righteousness; consequently the term "Christian" science is a misuse of words, a misnomer. Second Man is a triune being consisting of, body, soul, spirit. Soul and body are "of the earth, earthy;" from one single organic cell, the fertilized ovum, the immaterial life entity or vital force, directive of organic existence, builds unerringly a living sentient being. Thus, life is synonymous with soul; when the body is formed complete we speak of it as a living soul. All living souls except man, are dual consisting of soul and body. Man is the only living soul that is endowed by Omnipotent Creative Omniclence, with a Spirit. "Howbeit that is not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual." Third The organic body or living soul being essentially material and its environments wholly material, man can know absolutely nothing during his earth existence, except as he observe and rationally study the myriad phenomena of immaterial forces and material matter; by this means only is he enabled to become imbued with the spirit "of truth", "which is in you, and which ye have of God, and ye are not your own; for ys are bought with a price." The Human Body the Temple of God. Fourth No one who will, from the viewpoint of vitalism, watch the marvelous phenomena of organic life, study the splendors of .the human body, and learn the benevolence of those aberrant vital actions that we erroneously call "disease." can escape the conviction that, far from being a mere machine, driven by the merciless dynamic activities of atomic matter, it Is a vital realm and indeed the temple of God. Mrs. Eddy's Philosophy Contradicts the Bibte. In a little book entitled "Rudimeutal Divine Science," Mrs. Eddy, adapting the dialogue method of Plato, asks, "is there no matter?" and answers.! "All is mind. The five ma- J terial senses testify to the existence of matter. The spiritual senses afford no such evidence, but deny the t testimony of the material senses." Which testimony is correct? page 12. "Is man material or spiritual? According to the evidence of the socalled physical iseusea. man is mater ial, fallen, sick. depraved, mortal. tUieuce and spiritual sense contradict this, and they afford the only true evidence of the being of God and man. the material evidence being wholly false." Ibid. pp. 15, and 1. "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and bceathed into bis nostrils , lhe; breath of, life,
MAY STILL BE ALIVE.
and man became a living soul." Gen. XL, 7. Oh no Moses, you are in error, man did not become a material living eoul, only a spirit, says Mrs. faddy. "And so it is written, the first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickning spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural, and afterward that which is spiritual." I Cor.. XV., 45 46. No, no. Paul, says Mrs. Eddy, I see you are like all the rest, you can't grasp the thought,' the" first man Adi.n was never made, only the last Adam. "And I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." II Cor., V., 23. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your. bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Romans. XII., 1. Paul! I am surprised at your persistent error, you ouglit to know better, says Mrs. Eddy, when it is so clearly brought out in my Christian science that there is no such thing as a material organic body and life or vital force, all is spirit, only this and nothing more. "All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again to dust." Job, XXXI 15. Poor afflicted Job! If you only had the thought afforded by our "divine healing" you would know better than to speak of man returning to dust as he never was. "For he knoweth our frame: He re membereth that we are dust." Psalms, CII., 14. "Then shall the dust return to earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God who gave it." Eccles XII., 7. Oh Moses, Moses! of all inspired writers you should not make such a break! The spirit denies your testi mony, there is nothing but spirit don't you know. "But we have this treasure in eirth en vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us 11 Cor.. IX., 7. "For we know that, if our earthly tabernacle of this house were dissolved, we have a building of God. a house not made with hands, eternal in the heaven?." II Cor.. V.. 1. "What! know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you. which ye have of God, and lye are not your own? For ye are (bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body, and In your spirit, which ire God s." I Cor. VI., 19, 20. . Paul. I am discusted with your obtuseness, you are the dullest scholar i ever says jtrs Eddy, I shall have to expel you. "And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, (and w-e beheld his glory H3 of the only begotten son of the father.) full of grace and truth." St. John. I, 14. That cannot be, there is no flesh, no tiiUterial senses, only spirit, see? "Heboid my hnmls aud my feet, that it is I myself, handle nie and see, for a spirit hat:, not flesh and bones, as ye see me have." St. John XXlW. iJethink you good Master, sayg his christian science disciples, your late terrible experience ou the cruei cro?s has confused .your mind, don t you
see, the spiritual senses contradict you entirely, , your so-called material senses are wholly wrong. Christ's Plenary Credentials. The healing of the sick as well as all other miracles wrought by Jesus, were for the sole purpose of proving to thee then as now, sordidly material and unbelieving, world, that he really, was as he claimed, an embassay from Omnipotent Omniclence, endowed with "Even the spirit of truth." He said. "If I cast out devils by the Spirit of God. then the kingdom of God is come unto you." With righteous indignation at the thought of having to thus appeal to the selfish nature of the peoDle. he never failed to deliver to them stern rebuke of their unbe
lief without respect of personage. When the great nobleman asked him to heal his son, he said, "except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe." When entreated by a man in the crowj to heal his son, he taid, "O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and suffer you." When his fond mother, pifu'd of his miraculous prowess, and no doubt sought to show him off at the great wedding feast of Canna, r.skeU him to make wine, "Jesus sayeth unto her, woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour has not yet come." When the scribes and Pharisees sought of him a sign of his divine power he answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation -.jeeketh after a idgn, but no sign shall be given them except the sign of the prophet Jonas." A symbolic problem for man himself to solve. When a great multitude followed him to Capernicum, Jesus said unto them, "Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye seek Die not because ve saw the miracles, but be cause ye did eat of the loaves and were filled." The Divine Mind a Human Myth. The science of neurology or the study of the brain and nervous system and psychology or the operations of the mind, demonstrates beyond any doubt that mind, as such, cannot possibly occur without a material organ ized living brain; and in this respect as well as all other important fundimental scientific problems, we will find the Bible in perfect accord with pcience! we search the pages of Holy Writ in vain for such a term as Divine Mind, also such an expression as 'Divine Healing." The Bible the Fundamental Creed of Jehova God, not a Human Screed. Tf thp book be read as the Bible simply, by the self-thinking, and not as a human screed to bolster up some dogmatic doctrine or philosophy, neither as a work on geology, astronomy, history, chemistry, physics, ect. etc., it will be found to contain fundamental trueisms of all the highest and best human thought and intellect of the ages. While there is some conflict with religion and science, as vell as disagreement among the various religious cults, there is no conflict whatever between commonsense science and the Bible. The Black Board of Cosmology. When the word was made flesh and dwelt among us, the great Master Mind entered the training school of earth-life, placed upon the cosmic black board the symbolic equations of life, and saying , to his pupils, "You are free to chose for yourself, but

And so he turns away from the school room. While many, very many, scholars play hooky, and go swimming in the world-old swlmmlng-hole of hedonism, the good scholars stick loyally to books and school, and are working out these great life-problems. CONDITION OF WHEAT BEPOBTEDOBITE GOOD An Encouraging Statement Comes From Jefferson. HOT WEATHER'S WONDERS. llagerstown, Ind., June 22. The condition of wheat is said to be better in this immediate vicinity than any place else within the county. Unless some unlooked for damage, ensues there will be at least an average crop. Tho plant is strong and covers the ground well, but it is late and rust frequently injures late wheat. Should the weather be dry without frequent showers the danger from rust will be small and the yield sure to be good. Extensive preparations are being made by the local elevators to handle a big crop. The recent hot weather has done wonders for corn and farmers are no longer regarding the outlook as gloomy. A peculiarity of the season is the continued blooming of fruit trees. Pear trees especially show blooms while half x-own fruit may be seen on the same limb.
