The three appointive members of the state board of tax commissioners are now on the road attending the meetings of the various county boards of review which are equalizing tho assessment of real estate. They have divided up the state for the purpose of visiting- every county before the state board meets the latter part of July to consider the matter of assessing land. This is one of the most important features of the work of the state tax board. It touches every land owner in the state and is more vital to the masses than the assessment of the corporations. It is very iikely that the assessment of lands, as a general thing, will be somewhat higher than it is right now, owing to the fact that the value of property has increased steadily during the past four years. It is said, however, that there will be no radical increases and that the board, will make a great effort to fix the valuations so that they will be fair to all concerned. -

THEY KNOW IT. Thousands of people know that the ordinary remedies for piles ointments, suppositories and appliances will not cure. The best of them only bring passing relief. Dr. Leonhardt's Hem-Roid is a tab

let taken internally that removes the

cause of Piles, hence the cure is per

manent. Every package sold carries a guarantee with it. It is perfectly harmless, $1.00. Leo H. Fihe, Richmond, Ind., or The Dr. Leonhardt Co., Niagara Falls, N. Y.

There is in contemplation a new is

sue of Spanish "baby dollars" in honor of the advent of a son and heir to King Alfonso and Queen Ena. The Spanish people are already used to seeing a babv's head upon their silver

money, vast numbers of coins so im

nressed havimr been issued a few

weeks after the birth of Alfonso him

self, who was born into the world a king, his father. Alfonso XII, having died some months previously. This was a genuine coinage, done to circumvent the designs of the Carlist emis

saries, who circulated the story that no son had been born to the dowager Queen and that consequently the line of succession in that direction was permanently cut off.

Prospective Republican Candidates for Various Places in Wayne County to Put in an Appearance.

SPECIAL INTEREST IN THE CHOICE OF JUDGE

Fox, Lindemuth and Gardner are on the List, but no Formal Announcement Has Been Made..

The next republican nominating

election for the selection of candidates

for county officers -will be held next February, eight months off, but already, there are indications that the races will be of interest. Nominations will be for judge of the Wayne circuit court, sheriff, recorder and for commissioner of the western district. Judge Henry C. Fox will be a candidate for renomination and re-election as judge. He will have served twelve years at the completion of his present term. Attorney A. C. Lindemuth, former city attorney, and at one time state senator from Wayne county, Is mentioned as a prospective candidate as also is Attorney Alonzo M. Gardner, chairman of the republican county committee. No formal announcements, however, have been made by either. Meredith Unopposed. For sheriff, Linas Meredith, present incumbent, will have no opposition for his second term, if the precedent which has been broken but few times, is carried out. For recorder Will Robbins, of Abington township, a well known school teacher, is an avowed candidate, and the name of John King

of Centerville. also is spoken of im

connection with this race, though he has not made any announcement. Mr. King made the race for the nomination of recorder a few years ago. For commissioner of the western district Robert Beeson, of Harrison township, will be a candidate. He was in the race four years ago, and though defeated made a very strong showing. Minus Fox, of Hagerstown, also is said to be considering entering the commissioners' race.

HEW LAW REGARDING " CHILDREN'S WORK

McAbee Says It Is Being Closely Observed.

SAID TO BE ONE OF BEST

Factory Inspector McAbee and his deputies say that the law governing the employment of; children is being closely observed by managers of department stores and factories, but that it is causing I much heart-aches and tears. Hardly I a day passes but some inother comes in with a girl or boy under sixteen and asks for a special permit for thera to work. This is the tearful time about the factory inspector's department as many children of poor parents are just out of school and they want to work during the summer vacation. They cannot however, unless their parents make a false affidavit as to their age, which few mothers are willing to do. Many mothers come to the department with a pitiful story of how they need the help of their children and how they want to put them j to work to keep them out of mischief, but the department can do nothing for them. It has to enforce the law, and is , doing It. The child labor law in this state is said to be one of the best in the world.

Various reports indicate that this hag been the best maple season for

years. The average sugar tree tapped

ranges from two to four pounds. L-ast vpar 5.000.000 trees were tapped, and

as large a number this year. Five

thousand tons of sugar worth $1,000,-

000, is a crop of importance to the .Mountain state, remarks the

.Country Gentleman, especially as the

national pure food law (which ranks

second only to the oleo bill as bringing about an immense reform in the direction of common honesty In mercantile transactions) absolutely forbids the selling as Vermont maple sirup any product that is not astually and entirely what it professes to be. When in Italy a card was once brought to Madame Patti from a man whose name she did not know. When the stranger came in; he proved to be a little old man who was red and speechless with nervousness. Suddenly Patti

noticed smoke coming out of his coat. Without saying a word she seized a

glass of water and threw it over him. The old man had put his lighted cigar

into his pocket when, he went into the room and so had set fire to his coat. "Sir," said Mme. Patti, "I have had many admirers who professed themselves burning with admiration for me but I have never before met one who went so far as to set himself on fire to

prove it."
