DR. E. P. ST. JOHN OF HARTFORD, CONN. TALKS OF CHILDREN AND GIVES SOME VALUABLE SUGGESTIONS.

You're Apt to Forget In this warm weather that j-ou'Il need more coal next winter to keep warm, to say "nothing of coal for cooking right now. Know it's cheaper now than It will be? Know that there's no such scurry for it now as later on? Wise people get and keep ahead of the game. O. D. Bullerdick 529 S. 5th St. Phone 1235

Kokomo, Ind., June 19 Every county in the state is represented at the State Sunday school convention, which began in this city Tuesday. Will O. Finch, who has charge of the assignment of delegates, said last night that he was safe in saying that fully 500 visitors had been enrolled up to that time and that by today noon a total attendance of 1,000 would have reached Kokomo. The ready response of the citizens in the. matter of entertainment gives assurance that all arrivals will be accommodated with

quarters.

K. W. Halpenny, general secretary,

declares: "This is going to be the best convention Indiana has ever had.

judging from the attendance arriving."

W. C. Hall, of Indianapolis, president

of the association, arrived Tuesday and his advent was the signal for gen

eral enthusiasm and hand shaking. Mr. Hall "said: . "Tuesday night was

really the opening night of the con

vention, but as ail the sessions of the day were of a preliminary character, it seems as if the convention pro"ier

opened Tuesday night." ;

Talks of Children. The feature of the 'proceedings on

Tuesday was an address by Dr. E. P.

St.,John of Hartford, Conn., upon "The

Child Life." Dr. St. John has devoted

twenty years to the study of children

and their government. He made sev

eral good points. One was that the

people should not be impatient with

the baby under one year, of age, because he is restless, as that is the

greatest period of his physical development in life.

The doctor went on record against he cruelty of compelling children in

church or Sunday school to occupy the big seats used by the adults. He de

scribed how the position of the child.

n which it is necessarily . placed

would amount to cruelty to adults if

their feet were compelled for .a long

space of time to hang in the air. He also argued that children should be

given physical exercise before being

required to .engage in prayer in rigid position with bowed head. He said

that in the East the custom was also

o' give a certain amount of arm exer

cise before prayer was offered. He also stated 'that it was a wrong policy and an ignorance of child nature to ever say to the little boy or girl, "Don't," but that rightly used suggestions and persuasions would accomplish anything desired.
