TICULARLY "ROTTEN" AND HE WAS LUCKY TO ESCAPE WITH HIS LIFE. Cambridge City, Ind., June 18 'One of the most interesting: games that has ever been played on the L., E. & W. ball diamond, was witnessed by several hundred spectators yesterday afternoon. It was a bitterly fought contest between the heavy 'weights of the city, and the fire department nine in which the former won by a score of 22 to 12, which, as a bystander remarked, was like "tak ing money from a kid." Joe Groves, of Dublin, professional, umpired the Same and was fortunate enough to escape with his life, although a dele gation . of rooters carried him bodily from the grounds after he had made a "rotten" decision, in the fifth in ning. The occasion was enlivened by two Itinerant musicians, who were en ticed to the grounds by II. S. Beard, and were immediately requested tft leave by several indignant players on the fatmen's team. Excepting a few errors, disagreements and mistakes on the part of the umpire, the game was-well played. The teams lined up as follows : Fat Men Roy Jones, c, Paul Dris chel, p.. DAVY CUSICK, A POLO STAR, WON HER FIRST, BUT PAIR WERE DIVORCED AFTER ONLY A FEW MONTHS' TIME.
Muncie, Ind., June 18. Miss Sue Heminsray, who eloped from this city with David Cusick, the former Muncie polo star and later divorced from him at Kokomo, is soon to be married to Robert Scott, Jr., of this city, In New York. The wedding wjll culminate a school-mate romance. Cards announc ing the approaching wedding were re ceived in Muncie yesterday morning and last night Mrs. Robert Scott, Sr., and daughter, Miss Daisy, left for New York City, to be present at the ceremony. Miss Hemingray and Scott attended school together and paid much attention to each other but the "case" was broken up when David Cusick came here from the east to play polo. Miss Hemingray was infatuated with "Flaxen-haired Davy," and as Mrs. Anna Hemingray, her mother, opposed the suit of the polo player, the couple decided to elope and did it in a very romantic manner. Went to Gotham, Instead. Young Scott, who is the son of an East Main street hardware dealer, left Muncie a few months ago, telling his friends that he intended to spend some time in California. Instead, he went to New York, where Miss Hem ingray has been living with her mother. The old friendship was quickly renewed and in a few days they will be married. The bride was formerly a leader in society among the younger people and has a host of friends in Muncie. Her mother, who is a wealthy widow, is said to favor her marriage to Scott. GAMES ARE CANCELLED; GLOOM INJALL CAMP Neither Springfield Nor Portland Coming. WILL TRY FOR OTHERS. It appears at the present time that only one baseball game will be played in Richmond this week. Monday eve ning Manager Jessup was notified by the management of the Springfield Central league team that the exhibition game which was to have been played a.t Athletic park Thursday, was can celed. It was stated that on that date Springfield would play off a postponed game with Terre Haute. Later Manager Hunt of the Portland team notified Manager Jessup that his team would not be here Friday and Saturday. The loss of these three games, which would have attracted big crowds, is a hard blow to Manager Jessup and he handed Hunt a-few hot ones over the wire. If some other team can be booked here for Friday and Saturday the fans will have base ball, but it looks like nothing doing. Z SUCCESSOR CHOSEN Men Named in Bribery Graft Prosecution Now Control Municipality. J. L. GALLAGHER IS MAYOR. DEPOSED EXECUTIVE REMAINS IN JAIL SWEEPING CHANGES ARE PROMISED BY THE REFORM INFLUENCES. San Francisco, June 18. Under orders of William H. Langdon, district attorney, the board of supervisors, last night adopted a resolution declaring Mayor Eugene Schmitz temporarily unable to perform his official duties and appointed Supervisor James L- Gallagher acting mayor. The latter says he will assume the mayorality at once and he denies that he has made arrangements with the district attorney or anyone to resign at demand, in order to make way for a reform mayor whose name is yet to be anounced. Deputy District Attorney Heney, Rudolph Spreckels and Mr. Langdon and their immediate associates in the bribery graft are by this move placed in actual control of the municipal situation. Contest is Expected. That they will be allowed to so re main without legal contest by the convicted mayor's attorney's is not expected. The first act of the reform mayor, if the prosecution's program is carried out will be to demand the resignation of practically the entire Schmitz administration, whose places will be filled with reform agents as fast as vacancies are created. Unless disturbed by courts, the new regime will endure until next January. Schmitz in Jail. Mayor Schmitz, convicted last week, of the crime of extortion, remains a prisoner in the city and county jail. The resolution declaring the mayor's chair vacant and appointing Supervisor Gallagher to fill it was adopted after a fight on the floor. It was voted for by twelve supervisors, each of whose confessions to bribe-taking is transcribed in grand jury records. As none of these has been indicted for bribe-taking the general opinion is that "they are to escape punishment if the j' continue to do the bidding of the district attorney and his prosecuting associates. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ANXIOUS TOGET WORK Places Employing Hands Have Many Applications. DO NOT WANT TO LOAF. This is the season of the year when manufacturers and shop owners of Richmond are besieged with multitudinous applications for positions in their establishments. , It is the season of the year when high school and college boys are all in search of work and a large per cent of Richmond's school boys are at work in the factories and stores. The hot blasts in the foundry smelting rooms have no terrors to those who want to work. Aching backs are also, secondary considerations. The majority of boys now out of school are at work. The wages in many cases are small but acceptable. "Doan's Ointment cured me of eczema that had annoyed me a long time. The cure was permanent." Hon. S. W. NO DIRECT EFFECT IN CAM OF STRIKE Local Telegraphers Do Not Belong to Union. LARGER CITIES INCLUDED. Although a- widespread telegraphers strike may soon be precipitated, ac cording to the announcement being given to the press at the present time, local employes of the commercial tele graph lines state that Richmond will not be affected directly, as local telegraphers are not members of the un ion. Telegraphers unions have their stronghold in the larger cities and but few cities of Richmond's size have centralized organizations. Of course Richmond would be affected Indirectly by transmission of messages Into the cities affected by the strike, if it is declared.
