Whitewater, Ind., June 1.1. For a number of years a mooted question and

one much discussed, is that of the salary of the township trustee. At a

meeting of the advisory board the

board was requested by Trustee Anderson to fix the number of days for which he mighi draw pay. After some little discussion they decided that the duties of this office and its accessory work could be accomplished in 23 days, thus making his salary $450 per year. They also made an allow

ance of if'JO for office rent, fuel and light. In the light of his many duties and the great responsibility devolving upon him, to some this sum seems very meagre; to others, enough, and to" a few perhaps, too much. Franklin township has 2S square miles of territory, seven schools, and nearly fifty miles of highways that come under his direct supervision. Besides the school work and the roads there are numerous other affairs such as the school enumeration, school conveyances, school supplies, janitors, directors, school premises, fuel, etc., the poor, the reports and the keeping up of his books, board meetings and numerous minor items that take much time to properly look after. This office has become one of the most exacting in the gift of the people and one requiring the best efforts of high class men. Mr. Anderson has expressed himself as being entirely satisfied with the board's action, and although a time limit has been placed upon his work, he will not neglect a single item of township work and give every phase;

nis careiui attention ana necessary time.

NCREASE IN STEERAGE

Immigrant Is Now Facing This Proposition.

RANGE FROM $2 TO $4.

New York, June 15. The immigrant faces an increase in steerage rates from Europe within six weeks when the United States law increasing the head tax- from .$2 to $4 for every alien entering the country, goes into effect. While the steamship companies have always added the head tax to the cost of transportation, they have avoided criticism and complaint by materially improving steerage service and conditions ,so that today the humble newcomer from other shores travels in no

mean style and comfort, below decks

of the big Atlantic steamships.
