R AN OLD PROVERB. -5 . "A Penny Saved Is a Penny Earned' Is Almost UnivarsaJ. Like most of these wise old proverbs, ''a penny saved is a penny ejnmed" is probably, in some form or otlivr, universal. In Germany there are three forms of it "A penny saved is a penny gained" ("Ersparter Pfennig ist so gut Avie erworbene"'), "A penny saved is twopence got' ("Kin esparter Pfennig 1st zweimal verdient") and "Penny is penny's brother" ("Pfennig ist Pfennig's Bnider"). In Spanish. "A penny spnred is a penny saved" C'Quien i'ome y dexa, dos veces pone la mesa"). In Dutch, "A penny spared is better than a florin gained" ("Uen stuiver gespaawl is leter dan een gulden gewonnen"). In Danish, "A penny in time is as good as a dollar" ("Eu Skilling er i Tide saa god som en Daler"). In French, "Saving is getting" ("Qui epargue, gagne"). Similarly in German, "Saving is a greater art than gaining" ("Sparen 1st grossere kunst als erwerben"). Danish, "Money saved is as good as money gained" ("Den Penge man sparer er saa god som den, man avler"). Italian, "Money is money's brother" ("II danaro e fratello del danaro"). But money is no gain when it advances meatwKs ("Deniers avautont les bediers"). English, "Penny and penny laid up will be many," and "Who will not keep a penny shall never have many" live who is prodigal of little can never have a great deal. London Notes and Queries. SOME BIG BITES. They Show the Power of the Jaws of , tha Crocodile. The power of the jaws of the dile is terrific, says Sir Samuel crocoBaker in his book on wild beasts. Once, he continues, lie had the metal of a large hook the thickness of ordinary telegraph wire completely l)ent together, the barbed point being pressed tightly against the shank and rendered useless. This compression was caused by the snap of the jaws when seizing n live duck which he had used as a bait, the hook being fastened beneath one wing. On one occasion he found a fish weighing seventy pounds bitten clean through as if divided by a knife. This, again, was the work of the snap of the jaws of a crocodile. A Frenchman, M. Paul Bert, once made experiments on the strength of a crocodile's Jaws by means of a dynamometer, lie found that a crocodile weighing 120 pounds exerted a force of oOS pounds in closing his jaws. The lion has an enormous jaw power. On one occasion an African traveler pushed the butt end of his gun into a lion's mouth, and. the pressure of the jaws cracked it as though it had been struck by a steam hammer. . A Tough Cure. Faith will do wonders. A woman in Devonshire, England, recently said to a chemist: "I've got a cruel, bad cough, surely. I've heerd that bronchial troches are good things. IlaT'ee got any?" - The assistant pointed to a small box on the table and said: . "Yes; there they nre," "How much is it?' was the inquiry. , The price was paid, and the old woman took her departure. At night the assistant missed a box of glycerin soap (three cakes). ' A couple of days afterward she returned to the shop and said: "I.want'ee to take back two of them things T had t'other day. I took one of em. It was mortil hard to chew and nwfnl to swallow, but it cured the cough." London. Queen. Is Friday Unlucky? Is Friday unlucky? Gladstone. Beaconsfield. Washington. COURT ATTHE JAIL; PHILLIPS IS TRIED

Was Found Guilty of Being a Public Nuisance and Given Sixteen Lashes. PROPER RULES FOLLOWED. ELOQUENT PLEAS MADE BY LON FISHER AND FRANK CALEY, WHO TOOK RAPS AT THE REAL CITY COURT. Jim Phillips of Cambridge City, wlio is serving time in the county jail for "boot-legging" whiskey on Sunday, was tried in the county jail a few nights ago by a jury of his fellow prisoners on a charge of being a public nuisance and was found guilty and sentenced to receive sixteen lashes with a razor strap. The sentence was duly executed despite the howls of the victim. This statement was made today by Sheriff Meredith. The trial was carried out in accordance with the rules which prevail at the circuit and city courts, those taking part in the trial being perfectly familiar with the proceedings from past experiences. The case was given a hearing in a most impressive manner, and Sheriff Meredith states that the arguments by the attorneys were as eloquent as could be given by any of the shining lights of the Wayne county bar. ' Phillips was defended by Lon Fisher, a bright young colored man, who is serving a long sentence for insulting a white woman. Prosecutor Jeessup was Impersonated by Frank Caley, a book agent, released from the jail yes terday. after serving time for obtainine monev under false pretenses. The judge of the court was big Tom Fredericks, who is now out on bond awaiting trial ori a charge of petit larceny. Fredericks, to look impressive and judicial, appropriated a pair of specta cles used by Jim Jordan, a one-eyed prisoner. Jim has only one lens in his "specs," having taken out the lens which covered his "bad" eye, to use in the event that the one necessary lens is ever broken. Caley prosecuted Phillips in a most vigorous manner and was followed by Fisher, who held the jury spell-bound by his eloquence. He made a great impression on the jury by denouncing Judge Converse, Prosecutor Jessup, Pauper Attorney Freeman and others, and styling the city court as a "kangaroo court." Fisher's masterful argument saved his client from receiving thirty or forty lashes fromthe razor strap. WThen asked who impersonated the sheriff, Meredith stated that this part was taken by Bill Empke, an insane man. Sheriff Meredith states that nearly every prisoner is b rough to trial in th jail. Theprisoners find tnis an entertaining way to pass the time. Phillips' sentence, however, was an unusually severe one. Eternal Fitness of Things. The mistress of the house is a cultivated Bostonian of much musical taste, and the whistling of the footman, who believed himself alone in the house, fretted her artistic soul. "Joseph." she called at last from the head of the back stairs, "please don't whistle those vulgar ragtime things!" "Yes, mem," returned Joseph meekly. "I knew, mem," he continued, with unexpected spirit, "but j'ou can't expect a rhapsody of Liszt with cleaning the knives. That will come later when I'm polishing the silver." .. Youth's Companion f A somewhat weather beaten tramp being asked what was the matter with his coat replied: "Insomnia. It hasn't had a nap in ten years." NOTICE. A FRANC FOR A LIFE. Exciting Adventure With a Moslem Fanatic In Algeria. Near the western end of Ouar In a lonely street (.for most of the men were sleeping from 12 to 11 during tilt heat of the day) I met a tall, stalwart liifii from the inonniain, writes Rev. V. G. Pope, who was a missionary in Algeria. Accosting him with the usual Arabic salutation, i asked him if he couid read He answered, "No." "Where do you live?" "In the mountain, twenty mileswest." "IIve j'ou a sheik who can read? "Yes." "Then will you please take him thi book, with my greeting and ask hiii: to read it to you ail :" "What it is a Koran V" "No; the story of the lif? of ths Messiah." lie t'aon turned and asked if I was a follower of the Messiah, to which 1 answered, "Yes." Then arose his Jlcslem fauatieisr.:. for he was aa Aissaoua. a terribly fanatical section of the Moslems in Morocco. Drawing his knife, and holding' i' over me, he uttered one word, "Shahed!" (witness, meaning that I was to say, with my forefinger raised, "There is no God but Allah, and Mo

bammed is the prophet of Allah." I felt white, but tried to look courageous and unconcerned. I remonstrated with hiin for so acting w-iifc his Amel's guest, but all to no purpose. He reiterated his one word. "Shahed!" His knife was an ugly weapon. Ii looked like a piece of .sliarpened barrel hoop with two pieces of goat's horn fastened together to make a handle. Knowing the Arab's love of an English knife, I asked him if his knife was an English one. He answered that he had made It himself. Remembering that in one pocket 1 had a franc in silver and coppers and in the other a French louis, I deter mined to buy the knife If possible. Taking out my small change, I de tided to try that first. I referred to the fact that the EnglL-h were very proud of their knives and I would much like to take back to ray country a Moroccan knife to show what others could do and offered to purchase it. The sight of tho Fiench coppers and a glistening piece of silver was too much even for his fanaticism. He undid his leather sheath, restored the knife to its place, looked once up and down the street to see no one was looking, then, with apparent joy, exchanged the knife for the money and the book and went off happy. Which of the two felt the happier I cannot tell, but I never forgot that my life in Ouar was purchased back for a paltry francLiverpool Post. Among the Hagerstown people 'who were at Richmond Thursday, were Mrs. Frank Lay, Mrs. M. T. Fry, Mrs. Geo.
