City officials regret very much council's action in refusing to appropriate $100 to meet expenses of a local delegation to the annual meeting of tha Indiana Municipal league, which will be in session at Logansport June 17, 18, 19 and 20. The program arranged for this meeting lias just been received and it is a most comprehensive one and

of great value to all city officials. The petty economical action of the RiC. mond city council has spread broadcast through the state and has hurt this city more than our worthy city fathers immagine. A Iogansport paper prints a story to the effect that Richmond, one of the charter members of the league, has withdrawn from the organization and that Congressman Watson, who is to deliver an address on the evening of June 19, will probably not attend the meeting on account of the action of his fellow "townsmen."

Watson P. O'Neal, of the local board of public works, is to read . paper at this meeting on the evening of June

IS. Mr. O'Neal's subject is "The Best and Most Economical Method of the Collection and Disposal of Garbage." City Clerk Taggart, who is secretary of the league, will attend and it is probable that some of the other city officials, including probably President Merrill of the board, will also attend the meeting to show the people of Logansport that Richmond, not withstanding the action of the city council, is in sympathy with the aims and purposes of the league. At the next council meeting, June 17, which is the opening day of the league meeting, it is probable that an attempt will be made to have the city council reconsider its action and appropriate the desired amount so that a delegation can be sent to Logansport the following day.

Local and Wayne county cattle shippers are bucking up against a snag in the personage of the Chicago packers, who refuse to buy cows or heifers except subject to post mortem examinations in slaughtering establishments. The ruling is made against cows and heifers in preference to steers, because of the fact that there are more cows and heifers condemned than there are beeves. As the result of the ruling of the packers, local shippers are not sending their animals to Chicago. This fact is taken as further proof that Richmond should have govern

ment inspection, for if the cows and

heifers are not shipped to the Chicago market, many of them are butchered locally, and as there re more diseases in these animals than any other class, it logically follows that the city or slaughtering houses should have some means of protecting the people against disease in these animals. Disease of the worst sort has -been found in Wayne county cattle and it cannot possibly be argued that local cows which j

would have been shipped to Chicago, but kept at home and sold locally, were all free from disease.
