II. Lancaster, writing
napolis .News, says: The Brahm3 ' Requiem" was produced Wednesday evening, in the third and final concert of the festival. In it were enlisted the local chorus of 250 voices; the Theodore Thomas orchestra; Mrs. Rider-Kelsey, soprano and Herbert Witherspoon, bass. Will Earhart, the director of the chorus, conducted. The skeptical were astonished at the achievement. This work of Brahm is of a piece with the mass and the "Ninth Symphony," of Beethoven, and the Bach cantatas. It is profound in its philosophic proclamation and complex in its musical direction. It is found in the repertoires of the established festival associations only. Yet, the chorus here, but three years old and composed of singers unfamiliar with the choral-orchestra! literature, attacked the task with apparent confidence and went through it without hesitation and with an impressive understanding of the composer's intention. At all moments the tone volume was round and full
and the phrasing, except perhaps in
the men's choirs in soli, was thoughtful and skilfully turned. The result was, indeed, a triumph
for the singers and Mr. Earhart. The large audience was fully appreciative and enthusiastic and the conductor
wa3 heartily applauded at the close by the chorus and by the townspeople in front. The festival was an emphatic success, and a forward step. As a whole the programs of yesterday were of unfailing interest and the reception of the chorus, the orchestra and the soloists was sincerely enthusiastic and grateful.
